Glad to see Peter Laird on the channel. Always have mad respect for both him and Kevin Eastman for inadvertently getting me and thousands of others into the comics game with self publishing so this is an AMAZINGLY rare opportunity to get him to come into the light a bit because he's usually super reserved compared to Kevin Eastman.
    Thanks for this guys!

It's not just an interview. It's the story of life, ups and downs, of a great creator. Amazing work Cartoonists!

Yo - Scat! alum cartoonist here, I had a hero named "The Naked Avenger" (a page picked up later for Anarchy #3 at Last Gasp.) Peter was the big man when it started.

I still have a copy of the SNES turtles in time. In an alternate universe, I'd like to think that Eastman and Laird would have become partners at Image in 92 and Mirage Studio would still be operating today, Stan Sakai joins with them and expands Mirage Studio's IP with Usagi. Peter Laird seems a bit worn down by the business aspect of comics (Hendrix had the same problem with music, with relentless touring), seems like a nice old man that would be happy on walden's pond just drawing pictures all day and being left alone.

In that universe instead of tmnt toys from playmates they would come from Mcfarlane toys

Like you guys said at the end, there's so little of Laird in conversation so this was exciting to see come up.
Would have loved to have heard some talk about the 2003 animated series. For me, it's really the great tmnt on screen iteration, being that laird was involved and it adapted so much from the comics and really captured a nice blend of the comics and the original cartoon.

Really interesting to hear how ambivalent Peter and Kevin (moreso Peter) got regarding TMNT over time, really important to remember that tipping point between doing something as an exciting creative venture, and that venture becoming just doing daily, weekly admin for this business juggernaut that your baby became. Like how far do you wanna keep riding before it stops being fun and just becomes another job. Great interview as always, guys. I'd love to see another Eastman interview eventually!

Thank you Peter for taking the time to do this interview. I am glad to hear that you are doing well. Although I haven't read most of the Mirage comics, I used to spend a lot of time browsing the old Ninja Turtles website in the 2000s being captivated by the cover art and previews. The story that you, Kevin, and Mirage Studios laid out that inspired the 1990 movie and the 2003 cartoon in particular really resonates with me, and I know a lot of fans would really like to see more Mirage inspired stories soon.

This was maybe my favorite of your videos. I, too, applied for a Xeric grant. I didn’t get it, but it drove me to do the legwork of finishing the story, editing, book design, layout, etc. I asked for elaboration about the rejection. AC Farley graciously responded with an expanded explanation why. He also offered suggestions of less expensive printing options. This opened my mind that I could figure out a way to self publish the book, so I did. Farel (Pop Gun War) and Tom’s (Myth of 8 Opus) books excited me. It led me to check out and buy many other Xeric winners. Wonderful video, fellas.

So incredible to watch this amazing interview with Peter Laird. He and Kevin brought something into the world that gave me endless joy for my entire youth, a joy that continues into my 40’s. Growing up in the 80’s, I lived and breathed Turtles. The comics, the show, and my brother and I racing at top speed from the car to the TMNT aisle in Toys ‘r Us to grab up the newest action figures. They inspired me to start drawing my own comics, so from 3rd to 9th grade I drew my own cheesy violent comics on binder paper (which the turtles obviously guested in many times). And now my best friend who has two young boys of his own, sings them the TV theme song as their bedtime song every night. His youngest is 3 and can often be found wandering the house, dragging around his Rafael toy, whispering “turtle power!” to himself. The Turtles will live on forever, generation after generation. Truly one of the greatest gifts to pop culture ever!
PS - YES PLEASE make another comic!!!

Finally listened to the entire thing, this was really cool to hear. Hearing his side and why he sold TMNT makes a lot more sense, thank you guys for asking him about this. The only extra question I'd REALLY like answered someday is if he had any contributions to The Last Ronin (outside of the very original concept) or if he's given it a look. Really cool stuff though, even though you're not gonna see this thank you Mr. Laird for sitting down to answer questions!

Although, I like both Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman, I appreciate Peter Laird more for staying loyal to their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle franchise. That's how I am too. Once I really like or enjoy something enough, I don't want to completely move on from what I enjoy, especially if I created it. Peter Laird's loyalty to their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is beyond excellence! Even when he FINALLY sold them to Nickelodeon, he still stayed by and monitored his beloved franchise. His heart is still deep within their shells, although Donatello is his favorite. Anyways, like I was saying, I like both Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman but, I appreciate and respect Peter Laird more.

If I didn't have the TMNT in my life as a kid, I probably wouldn't be drawing today. Peter and Kevin have had the biggest impact on my creativity. I hope they both return to the Cartoonist Kayfabe channel. Could you imagine what it would be like if they both appeared on this channel at the same time... maybe to review an issue of the old-school Mirage Publishing TMNT comics? A man can hope... Anyways, THANK YOU, Ed and Jim!

Peter Laird is, alongside Kevin Eastman, indeed one of the greats. And you guys did a great job in handling the interview the way you did.
TMNT stands out above and beyond most of the mainstream comics to this day because it was a genuine labor of love. It was creative, original, and intrinsically interesting.
And the string of coincidences it took to create TMNT gives the property a mystical allure, like it was meant to be. Quite unlike many comic books being created today.

So happy to see this, and so nice to hear from Peter since he stepped back from the Turtles and the public in general. I have had a strong feeling his time keeping the Turtles afloat in the dark years contributed to his loss of love for the medium. I was very sad to hear how tired and almost defeated he sounded when he sold them. (And was delighted when Kevin was ready to step back in to herald their transition into a new era). But what Peter did I am convinced truly kept the Turtles alive and set them up for their sustained success. I haven't finished the interview, but I'm also kind of savoring it. Thanks for this gem!

I understand where he is coming from when something you love so much and spend so much time becomes something that is no longer inspiring to you. At 32:18 you can see the real disappointment of giving up on your creative dream for financial success. We never really got to see the culmination of Peter and Kevin's vision for independent comics. They were just getting started and their separate work was never as good as the work they did together. Will we ever see them work together again on a volume 5? That would be phenomenal.
