And that makes me always say this is the exact Change/halfway point in the storytelling and production and everything. It’s all uphill from here but always was and this was a real “could have been in season 2 or 3” goodbye moment. I LOVE this episode
It's been almost 25 years since I was in college. I'm sure the locals found us obnoxious and loud like most new 'adults'. I'm sure others of us came off as spoiled or even snooty. But I never once saw one of my fellow students try to show off their book learning to make a local feel stupid, especially not a bartender. 7:30 This would never happen, the bartender would say "I think you may be a bit over your limit, I think you should leave now, my friend the bouncer also think you should leave"
Got behind on the reactions and am catching up now. Patker is a poophead and I generally don't condone dating violence (former relationships still count), but cave girl Buffy bonking him on the head was kinda cathartic, especially since he felt absolutely zero guilt or remorse about how he treated Buffy and the other girls he uses like this. And Willow's calling him out on his BS was epic.
Beer Bad was actually written in an attempt to get a tax write-off as an anti-drinking episode (a common practice then that didn't work for BTVS). I'd rather watch this episode 5 times in a row than a particular episode in a future season that EVERYONE hates. Even the actors.
That varies by state, for me and most states it’s 18 to be able to sell it, a few it’s 21, some it’s 15/16, and some just don’t have an age! Crazy for sure, but def more regulated than back then!
10:13 The Indian guy at the table, is Kal Penn (Van Wilder, Harold & Kumar, House (TV Series)) I always forget how many new and upcoming actors/actresses Joss got for his stuff. Actually, in that first "Beer Meeting", I don't think they meant "Ok, we're losing her." in a misogynistic way. More, hey guys she's losing interest and we're boring her so let's change things up. GRANTED, they initially came off as pretty predatory, and at least one of them is a douche. But, I don't think it was intended as "Talking down". Just my view on it.
Thank you for your reactions. I enjoy how you try to get 1+1 to equal 3 with your guesses. However it is difficult for a reactor watching Buffy for the first time after Twilight, Vampire Diaries, Supernatural etc. Remember that Buffy came first and everything else that followed borrowed, stole, and was greatly influenced. It’s impossible to not draw on your knowledge to expect or guess what happens next with the characters. Luckily for some of us, we saw this fresh when it aired and were taken into supernatural territory for the first time. The other thing challenging for a reactor like you is to understand the times and factors effectively molding the show. BTVS was a target for outside interest groups, studio executives, self important critics, and WB money officers wanting a cut and say in the product. This episode as mentioned was BTVS attempt, very week, for a public service announcement condemning college drinking.( I seem to remember quite a few stories about binge drinking on campus and how it was ruining lives and the college community) Yes it was a thing and many shows had episodes that were considered PSA’s. The television networks were still the main players and all sorts of pressure groups were all trying to save our culture. You can tell they did a great job😊. Keep up the fun reactions and hope you enjoy the Buffy journey.
A male seduction demon would be called an incubus. While a female seduction demon is called a succubus. The show Lost Girl stars a Succubus as the main character. That is a really good show you could react to when you have the time.
It is in this episode where I would've wanted Buffy and Xander to have gotten closer. Yes, I'm one of the few that from day 1, wanted Buffy and Xander together. Also, I really didn't notice it until it was pointed out years later that Parker looks like Xander. And since Xander was gone for a few months before his friends started college, it makes me wonder if Buffy missed Xander as more than just a friend. I mean, he's been there for her through her ups and downs. And though they didn't agree most of the time when it came to Angel, he's been there fighting at her side. He did bring her back to life. So yes, in this episode I was rooting for them to have feelings for each other especially after she liked how he smelled lol. I wanted him to give her another talking to, convince her that she doesn't need that trash, aka Parker, in her life. That Parker is the one who's missing out on the great person that is Buffy. Bringing Xander and Buffy closer and her realizing her BFF Xander is the one who truly sees her for her. And it's a major plus that she doesn't need to explain to him about her being a Slayer cuz he's totally cool with that. He's the "normal" she's been looking for in a guy.
This is a terrible episode on the first watch, and a great drinking game episode on rewatches. I think I've reached the point where I'm genuinely entertained by it 😂 "What did we learn about beer?" "FOAMY" "Good, just as long as that's clear."
A little tip from me: Buffy came before all the other vampire and werewolf shows, all of which are very heavily influenced and inspired by Buffy. However, Buffy often has its own and very unique spin on certain stories and their progressions, which is why references and deriving the story from other shows doesn't always help and is also not helpful if you want to be surprised. Still, I like your analysis, even though it's often influenced by other shows you've seen before. Lay back, enjoy the spin and surprise buffy helds for you and dont use the ideas from other shows. Try to keep them out. It helps you to enjoy the show even more. As i said: its just a tip. I know its hard but u will see buffy is greater in storytelling as the other vamp and wolf shows. Trust us :)
I like this episode. But back to your comment about Parker. He did Buffy Bad., Now, she did Parker Bad. They are even and NOW he can plead for forgiveness. But in my opinion, he has had this opportunity for weeks, and he just moves on to another girl. He will never change. He plans on getting it out of his system. But if he hasn't yet, he never will. And, Beer Bad. Post Great. LOL
This story gets a lot of crap but here are three reasons to like it: 1) As a working-class person who went to university, I can confirm that there are many arseholes who are so pretentious and think they are better because they have money and use long words. 2) SMG is just hilarious, especially when she is on the swivel chair, and 3) Buffy whacks Parker with a branch.
U will get the previously on buffy... Every other episode because it was to remind the viewers every week wot happened the week before incase some viewers forgot wot happened which I use to do most weeks.
I sold alcohol many years ago at a grocery store and you just needed to be 17 if I remember right. Laws have tightened up a lot since this show was on and it depends on the state.
"why are we still seeing him in the previously on?" because unfortunately he's cute :/ anyway, this is actually such a comfort episode for me, so silly
My favourite episode is ‘the body’. It is the episode submitted for an Emmy. So many great cinematography and directorial choices that make this so good. And, so sad.
Bit of a weird one this - obviously the plot is as daft as any Buffy episode gets - but the whole theme just doesn't sit with me - IIRC this was made in conjunction with some anti-drinking pressure group? I mean kids getting drunk is a problem - but Buffy isn't a kid and the execution is just silly. I dunno - for me this would have made more sense (marginally) as a season 3 episode - but then I did all my formative drinking at school, not at university. This may be a cultural difference. Personally, I really like beer. There's a wondering range of types and tastes and I enjoy it on a weekly basis. I also haven't been drunk in years - let alone Neanderthal. Beer is definitely good.
I was not going to say anything cuz of spoilers but Parker is just a scum human being who had no communication skills at all. One night stands are fine, casual s** is fine but both parties need to aware and agree to it- he chose not to talk to Buffy and just do what he wanted. The girls name is Viruca (probably spelled it wrong)

The continued tradition of Buffy having different hair in a weird Buffy episode. "Nothing can defeat the penis!" - one of the worst cases of bad ADR on the show. No offense to the actress, but I could not stand seeing Veruca onscreen at all. Shy is the band name. The actress was in a lot of stuff at the time, nut her work ramped down and she may have retired in 2008. Please, never related Twilight and Buffy. A severe insult to Buffy. A popular phrase when that film came out, "....And the Buffy staked Edward. The end" Parker is just a guy who is attractive and charming and knows how to use that to get with various women he wants. I've met a lot of guys like him, more than the "smart guy a-hole who became a caveman" type of guy. David Solomon started a a Buffy Producer being the head of Post Production. One if that job's duties is directing the scenes ad shots you discovered are needed when editing an episode. His first episide as actual director (ad second tie credited as director ever) was S2's "Who's Line...Part 1." S4 was his last season as head of post. He remain a favorite director of Joss', directing a total of 19 Buffy episodes and episodes of most of Joss' other shows. It helps that he seemed well liked in general. I liked him a lit. He's still directing as of at least 2022.
Every time I see a reactor watch this episode or talk about it I hope they see past the perspective bias and the overt hypocrisy of this episode. Let down again. Reverse the roles, and you would have the exact opposite opinion on Buffy and Parker. He wasn't interested in a relationship with her. He never told her he was. Even if he did, he can't change his mind at any time and that is the end of it? Buffy stalked him and her friend harassed him over it. The writers made her "not in control of herself" to justify assaulting him. Come on people, it's not 1999 anymore.
I have come to like this one.. but it had 3 cringy moments: (a) Xander being humiliated by that customer, (b) Buffy agreeing to drink with those creepy guys felt forced, and (c) wondering if the scriptwriters were really going to have Willow fall for Parker's lines. Easier on a rewatch.
She was in a vulnerable state emotionally because of Parker so I disagree that her drinking with the frat guys felt forced. It actually made a lot of sense within the context of the plot.
I personally dislike this episode because Buffy is a fantasy series, with fantasy elements. When they mix science stuff, I don't know........ It gets weird, not in a good way. Also, the "villain" motivation is weak, the resolution is rushed... It does have some fun moments, but overall it's a no hahahahhah Was still a good time watching your reaction to it
I mean, the motivation for the villain is weak, yes, but also, it's not like he wants to kill anyone or anything; it's more like "those dudes are a**holes so let's humiliate them a little bit". Plus it's temporary. Also, not really science stuff. A warlock taught him how to do it! :p If anything the commando guys we've been seeing a bunch so far, fighting vampires with guns and tasers, they are more science-y than the dude's beer.
@@ChevaliersEmeraude Sure, but my point is that Cromagnon people are not fantastic beasts, they really existed. Would be like Buffy fighting a dinosaur instead of a monster, like...? It's mixing two universes that in my eyes don't overlap
@@PauloCesarLira5 I mean, didn't she fought a robot in Ted? And those swimmers that were turned into monsters, wasn't that some kind of USSR experiment? In comparison, magic beer that turn people into cavemen feels more mystical! :p
This is widely known as possibly the worst Buffy episode ever. It makes Bad Eggs and Go Fish look like masterpieces. Don't worry though; it's all uphill from here.
13:56 ..."What if Shy and parker are bothe like seduction demons"... You should really think about start writing fanfiction... You're overthinking is truly mesmerizing😉
Fun fact: this episode was made specifically to get a grant for TV episodes with anti-drug messages, but it failed to get the money in the end because the episode only takes a stance on magic caveman beer, not the real thing lol
There are 144 episodes of BTVS, they can't all be brilliant. This is possibly the worse episode of BTVS ever, up there with Go Fish, Bad Eggs and couple more from this Season, (and a few episodes from S6 and S7 don't want to mention names cos of spoilers). Though very last bit when Parker gets hit over the head again with the club was very funny. There were so many fantastic episodes of this show over the seven series, but this really isn't one of them, some fans say on re-watch it's better, I don't agree, it was a real filler of an episode thankfully lost in one the the greatest TV shows of all time. This is actually the lowest ranked episode on IMDB of all 144 episodes.

The important thing is that, at the end of the episode, Buffy has gotten over Parker. His apology, genuine or not, would not be enough win Buffy back.
Remember Faith's "See. Want. Take." All Id.
Geez, "this kid looks like he is 21 and 12 at the same time" really got me good.
Parker absolutely was not genuine with his apology. He just tells everyone what he thinks they want to hear.
An important safety tip is never run in the presence of predators, If you run they are hardwired to pursue because to them you are now prey.
Or just always make sure in the company of someone you can run faster than.
Think about how Oz “met” Willow. “Cute girl. Fascinating.” That was (I think) before he had werewolf instincts - another example of the id.

Nice early role from Kal Penn of Harold and Kumar fame - looks like this is only his third or fourth credited role between movies and TV.
Intelligence and education have very little to due with each other.
The law changed in the last few years that you now have to be old enough to buy alcohol to be able to sell it
That varies by state, for me and most states it’s 18 to be able to sell it, a few it’s 21, some it’s 15/16, and some just don’t have an age! Crazy for sure, but def more regulated than back then!
@@coreyissus ok. I know it's 21 where I live. Every time I go thru this one girls line at a Walmart she has to go get someone else to ring it up
The Network anti alcohol episode. But alcohol actually solves all Buffy's problems.
yeah they didn't get the grant so they changed the script a bit
Cass, the band is named Shy.
The female lead singer is Veruca.
Beer do be bad
He's the "normal" she's been looking for in a guy.
hahaha oh im excited for the ridiculousness of this one
I agree, Cass. Communication is important if the two parties are going to get intimate. Both need to know what kind of relationship they are having.
Fire bad, tree pretty.
I sold alcohol many years ago at a grocery store and you just needed to be 17 if I remember right. Laws have tightened up a lot since this show was on and it depends on the state.
I miss Angel more spike please
Why do we need cavemen? So Buffy can hit Parker--twice!
i love this episode
Season 4 is wild. My two least favorite Buffy episodes but then also one of the best episodes of television period just sprinkled in for good measure.
But who would u choose between Angel and Riley
Angel but riley was more right for her he was human
"why are we still seeing him in the previously on?" because unfortunately he's cute :/
anyway, this is actually such a comfort episode for me, so silly
You should react to the “PORTALS” album by Melanie Martinez!
The girl's name is Verucha (very Russian). She sings for a band called "Shy."
She is Veruca, and no, it's nowhere near Russian.
How about this?
Giles = Brain, Buffy = Brawn, Willow = Spirit, Xander = Heart
Nah, I don't see it ;-)
Thank goodness this isn't Twilight. There's none of that creepy imprinting nonsense even at its worst.
‼️‼️I HAVE A REQUEST FOR AN ALBUM REACTION: MELODRAMA BY LORDE AND ALSO MAYBE MITSKI'S ALBUMS.‼️‼️
‼️‼️ALSO YOU SHOULD DO GAMEPLAY ON YOUR OTHER CHANNEL LIKE MAYBE YOU SHOULD PLAY DEAD BY DAYLIGHT OR THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE GAME. MAYBE EVEN ROBLOX LOLLL.‼️‼️
One of the lowest rated episodes
But Parker being knocked out is a classic
I like this episode. The monster of the week is only so so but good interactions and character moments. Also Parker really bad
heyyy sorry for the off topic comment but I really really enjoy your music reactions and I would love that you listen to Caroline Polachek's latest album release Desire, I Want To Turn Into You: Everasking Edition
Would you ever do Angel reactions?
she's doing as a patreon exclusive

This is considered the worst Buffy episode
Previously ons always have major spoilers. Other than 5-22, you really should never watch them, please
The end"
Parker is just a guy who is attractive and charming and knows how to use that to get with various women he wants.
This is such an uneven season. It has some of the worst episodes of the series but also four of my top ten favourite episodes.
Agree. Overall, it's my least favourite season but the good S4 episodes are top 10 of the entire series.
It's considered the worst episode of the worst season.
By many.
By me, too. 😅
@@ChevaliersEmeraude I also don't like these episodes hhaahahah But you got a point
This is widely known as possibly the worst Buffy episode ever. It makes Bad Eggs and Go Fish look like masterpieces. Don't worry though; it's all uphill from here.
Kal Penn what's up. Harold and Kumar star. Not to mention he worked for President Obama. Buffy's Impact is real.
Fire bad, tree pretty. 🔥🌲👍

Maybe also cuz all Buffy learned about beer was
*F O A M Y*
😂😂😂
This is actually the lowest ranked episode on IMDB of all 144 episodes.
you so overthink EVERYTHING, a seduction demon? Really?
