Slow and steady recovery with Tiptoe

- If anyone knows how to take it slow and steady, it's Tiptoe. We have been back from the vet for 2 weeks now, and we are just starting to get back into a routine. He has been hesitant to follow any of his typical routine behaviors (eating hay/grass first thing, soaking in his pool, basking in the sun, etc.), which is ok, but he thrives off of a stable and consistent routine. Seeing him get back into these habits is great! I can incentivize him to engage in his day-to-day behaviors; however, it's a little hard to make a 175-pound tortoise into the soaking pool if he doesn't want to!

Pet insurance is a big scam. I had it for five digs and they rejected every claim. Save the money you would pay each month and pay vet yourself.
I’ve had pet insurance on my two Yorkies for years and been very pleased. They’ve paid out over $14000.00 on my younger dog.

I have decided not to get my nephews a little turtle after watching you. There is no way they are ready for this kind of commitment. I'll continue to evaluate.
Thank you for sharing Tiptoe. You are so wonderful to him and it’s really lovely to watch. Tiptoe always brightens my day. Even tho I have cats, dog and chickens to love. I will never have a Tiptoe and I appreciate you sharing his life with us💖

Thank you for having Tiptoe brighten everyone’s day. I’ve been at a low point in my life this year. My dad passed in April then my kitty, Vinny of 15 years passed a week later. Hi, are you still giving tiptoe his calcium, or does he take vitamins for big boy growth? He looks better. Was he passing gas in his pool? lol. He's so super cool. You're a great mama, love you tiptoe.
He gets calcium powder sprinkled on his grass daily and weekly he has a vitamin :) When he dropped down I think that all of water was filling up in his crevices however he did pass some gas later hahahaha

Caitlin, I saw an Instagram story yesterday that was about a little girl who inherited her grandmother's tortoise as it neared 150 years old. I could tell that as the story went on, your photo and then Tiptoe's was used. Some of the earlier photos were definitely another girl, but later ones were you. Just wanted to let you know. Thank goodness we know the real you and T!!! He's looking good!

He's not exactly a lap dog, Caitlin... he's dead weight on one leg! Hopefully he's getting back to his old self as the weather warms up.

Coming from a perspective outsider, maybe I haven't been keeping up, but he's changing. I have noticed that he's growing.....maybe growing up? Is he coming into a 'rompous teenager?' Needing a chance to sow some oats? Or pal around with a friend?

If tiptoe likes tomatos, a small cherry tomato plant would be a great way to get fresh free treats for him. They require very little care and will grow in the same spot forever if you let them, especially in a warm climate like cali. Just a thought since he enjoys the hibiscus flowers so much. Thats assuming tomatos are even safe which I dont know

He wasn't feeling well for a few weeks there (we took him to the vet) but he is slowly but surely getting back to routine

The poor animal hasn't even got bedding in the tiny box she keeps him in so a girlfriend isn't likely.

I've not watched enough to know what bedding she uses in his night house.
Whatever bedding one uses for tortoises must be something safe if they eat it.ikr alfalfa hay, but if they eat too much that's not necessarily a good thing.
I'm thinking for the most part tortoise doesn't need bedding per se except to feel sheltered as it would in a burrow underground. But here the tortoise house serves as a burrow. I think she has it temperature controlled too? Or at least heated in cool weather?
I think he then has daily use of their yard and access to his soaking pool?
And she evidently takes him on 'walk abouts' too.
But I do wonder that he might want a mate, or even a rival male to spar with.
@RLaraMoore this is a desert dwelling animal, it needs to be able to burrow to regulate its temperature.
The poor housing and diet is likely to be a contributing factor in his illness.

He is an African species. Yes a tortoise, but not strictly a desert species, I believe.
I think she has had him for many many years. I believe she does provide temperature controlled environment in his house.
I'm assuming she uses typical vitamins and minerals supplements on his food made for tortoises.
I do wonder about the frequency of his pool soakings though.
The tortoises I've cared for in the past I think we only "soaked" then 1-3? times a week. (They always had drinking water available daily) and we only soaked them in ankle deep water for 15 minutes to half hour or so each time.
To your point, an African Spur Thighed tortoise will naturally like to dig in dirt.
Even if he doesn't need a burrow, having his house shelter already available for him.
Maybe he would enjoy a bit of yard for dirt to dig in, just for the occupation of digging?
@RLaraMoore The problem is these tortoises regulate their temperature by digging and burrowing. The climate in California is far from ideal and that is exacerbated if he can't burrow.
In the tiny box he sleeps in there is a heat lamp but no bedding, the box is tiny and he can't move away or burrow to regulate his temperature.
Why on earth doesn't she even provide the poor animal with bedding? That has to be one of the most basic requirements for most animals.
The winters in California are far too cold for this species so he is spending lengthy periods alone in a small wooden box with even the most basic of bedding.
I'm sure Cailin means well but I really wish she'd consider rehousing Tiptoe where his needs can be met.
I never though I would love a tortoise that I'd never met, and who lives half way around the world, yet here we are. I'm so glad he's feeling better. Summer is on the way Tiptoe. Hang in there buddy.

Ive been looking forward to your vids with Mr T for quite a spell. Im 70 & an avid animal lover. I adore Tip Toe. what a sweetheart he is. Im not sure what had him down, but im very happy to see that hes recovering from whatever it was.

Hi Caitlin! I am so glad Tiptoe is on the mend. Did you find out any further results from his fecal and blood work? I am a nurse and have been worried about him; and praying for him, too!
Everything looked good it's a big question mark!! He is still having diarrhea but he is having normal poops sprinkled in there too. He has been showing less discomfort the past few days which has been a relief. I have NO idea what could have caused his whole system to go into such a funk but I believe we are finally on the other side of it!! Praying for some good poops lol
That issue was a bit if a setback but opened the door for a major come back It's awesome to see the Lil guy looking so much better now! I was really worried! Your tortoise is so clean and well taken care of it is obvious that you care for him in such a painstaking manner When I say clean I mean it! He looks free from any build up of any kind on any part of his anatomy ❤Great job 😊
