    keeping your grandmother and other travel mates in the shots make these much more unique (and memorable for you). i rarely take photos of "sights" without my travel companions, because the shots end up being not much different than standard postcards.

    Awesome video and pictures!!
    But I find it's kinda funny when you chose a Kodak filmstock to shoot Mt Fuji instead of you know, an another whole line of filmstock NAMED after this mountain, lol.

    The flowery shot of the mountain! Sure, it's the cliché view of Mount Fuji, but still, wow! I love how colourful the streets are and especially the inside of the train. So many details to take in.

    I was so delighted to see that our small discussion sparked your interest in experimenting with more vertical shots :) Filling the bottom of the frame tends to be a challenge for me as well if there is no obvious foreground so I resort to shadows, cracks or street markings resembling lines which can be placed leading from the corners to the center (you did something similar with the cute little stream of water) or place something such as a manhole cover or a pothole in a corner. I sometimes crop my vertical shots as well to lessen the impact of an empty bottom or top. I definitely think you are right that the shot works better in square format which interestingly resembles the synthesis of our preferences.

      And I LOVE the last shot! All elements falling into place in the composition is really satisfying to me. Even the small reflection at the top and the blurr at the bottom serve as a framing elements. Lighting and metering being perfect helps of course

    I am currently trying to document our last month in Hangzhou, China on kodak gold 200. We've lived here for the last 7 years and it has become more of a home than our actual home. It's really sad moving away but we'll be nearby and having new adventures so I guess that'll be fun. Hopefully I can do Hangzhou & our memories of it justice. It's actually my first proper foray into film photography & and bought a 2nd hand huaxia Chinese made film camera, so that also makes it special. Anyway, all this is actually to say Thank you Teo. Your channel & content inspired me to try it out and to make photos that mean more to me than anyone else. I'm making photos for myself more and more because of you. I may try make a Teo Crawford inspired video about it.

    6:12 It's not that the aspect ratio is wrong, but rather the focal length. I think it didn't really worked because the photo was shot too wide. Needed compression there right at the centre with a telephoto lens.

    Can I propose that the reason you may not like this photo is the fact that the simplest elements are in the foreground, and the deeper you look down that road, it becomes a mess of tiny details
    Perhaps if you had taken even a few steps forward, the foreground would have been more harmonious in level of detail with the background.
    I’ve been loving following along with this japan trip

    • @teocrawford
      @teocrawford Рік тому +1

      Ahh I see, I suppose it strongly depends on the subject too, so maybe it’s just the stuff that I like to photograph is usually better suited for horizontal?? I don’t know haha🤷🏻‍♂️😅

    • @IFrAnIKOz
      @IFrAnIKOz Рік тому +1

      It is the first and most basic choice in composition yet due to the horizontal nature of our world (with our vision being horizontal and movement mostly occuring along a horizontal plane) it is highly impactful. I never gave it much thought until i compiled my favourite photographs and noticed almost all of them were shot in vertical.

    5:35 (vertical shot)
    I think I know why you dislike it
    without cropping the picture there is a lot of empty space at the top and bottom, which in turn makes the taxi feel tiny, so square crop removes that.
    And the tree on the right is big and dark compared to the rest of the picture resulting with it feeling quite heavy, along with the building next to it the two take up most of the right side of the frame which may cause the rest of the picture to feel off balance
    I still quite like it tho
