Hi Robert. This is the first one of your video I watched. Immediately, I liked your title: “A mad trapper”. You really don’t look like a mad man, when we listen your comments. But, you have good lessons to teach, the one that we should use for environmental purposes in wildlife management as well as in forest management and why not … with politicians who make forest rules from their office in large cities. They should follow you on your trapline and listen, watch, touch, ask … Instead, the rules and the laws would be based on values, technical as well as spiritual, based on time and experience. I’d be angry too if I came across an on spring trap not in season. It is bad for the choppers future, but I also care about the animals. I’m sad that your benches and birdfeeders got burned down. I’m glad we got to see the weasel together and I’m glad that you still say peace even after all that happened in this video

Good man Robert. You've shown how important it is to scout the property. In order to maintain a healthy bounty and preserve the taking of animals. We have to tag our traps with our name, address and phone number, just a preventive measure for the same problems you just pointed out. It would be really cool if you could begin a registry for those interested in learning how to trap. Take them out and show them how to care for the land and how the land will take care of us. Robert, unfortunately, there are many who have no mentors to teach them and many of them don't know who or how to ask for help! Also there are those who just don't care! As you know, traps are expensive so, I have a hard time seeing how they are stupid enough to leave them! Maybe things are different in Canada but no one, in his or her right mind would do that here, in the US! Those traps wouldn't be there when they went back to set them the next season! They would have been stolen. In the nearly 50 years, I trapped, I think I have only found maybe 6 traps. One, was grown 6 inches into a tree! It was an old # 1.5 Marten trap, a jump style and I recognized the mark on the trap as one used by an older friend. I chopped it out of the dead tree it was in and the next time I saw him I showed it to him. When I told him where I had found it he said he hadn't trapped up there in over 30 years! I still have that trap, as a memento of trapping when I was a young man. Marten trapping areas, for me are 30 or 40 miles away so, with no snow machine I never have tried for them. I'm disabled now, and have no way to get around far enough away to keep from catching one or more of our 7 large dogs so, no longer trap! I'm glad you are a kind and conscientious man! It is men like you that should be teaching the young ones. I hope you do as passing on the culture and the right ways of doing things is a must because if it isn't done, it will be lost. And aren’t the trap lines registered to a certain trapper or is it a free for all up that way? And the birch tree getting cut down for chaga is ridiculous. Just from the work involved to make those boxes , I'm thinking the owner might be dead or disabled.. Good on you for clearing away the traps..I would think the owner would be happy you helped him out.. I hope someone knows who that was, by the box style ,and can finish the story..
The animals are that much better because of you policing the bad trappers. There is absolutely no reason for a trap to be left loaded and not taken out of service while season is over!!!!! Peace!!
Robert : I spend many hours a year educating trappers to do thing the right way. So this angers me also. Here in the US we are required to tag out taps/ Are you not required to label yours with your name and or trapper number? Thanks for another good video!
In British Columbia, a trapper must buy a trap line, so any traps in that area belong to the owner of that trap line. Trappers must get permission from land owners to trap private land. So, in answer to your question, we don't need to tag our traps because each trapper must have a registered trap line!
Could be a kid trying to trap. Never know who... But if they left them set, think if ya had a dog with you an got caught... While on a walk down the trail. An your dog got an injury. i trap as well and find traps and they go home with me that trapper doesn't belong there,im not sure if i will trap this year the fur price is to low here and i know i will miss it vary much,well keep making vids i do enjoy your vids.
I think trapper was very good skilled trapper but perhaps an ancestor, that went on to happy hunting ground...it maybe younger man that died too. Those boxes not made by lazy person or valuable traps just abandoned. Beaver snare maybe, but a man uses what he has. Not always this done by white man...both good and bad white and native...all get sick and die...or hurt badly. I'm old now...but once many years ago, I set many traps and somehow forgot one. A couple years later...a man brought me my trap that had caught a fox. Sad for the fox, sad for me. I've not trapped for 20 years now. Do your best but sometimes bad things happen to good people...we don't always know.
All I can say is, it wasn't me. My guess is something must have happened to the owner because that was a lot of work to just leave behind. There were a lot of traps for such a small area.

No matter how remote the area someone traps in, those that trap that don't put trap tags on their traps and snare's shouldn't be trapping or consider themselves a Trapper. Here in the State's your illegal trapping if you don't have a tag on your traps or snares with your contact information on them.
Thats a pretty ignorant comment not knowing how trapping is regulated in Northern Canada. Here we have designated fur blocks with registered traplines, so anybody who is not registered on a given trap line can't legally trap that area. The exception would be on reservations, where any band member can trap on reserve land (may vary between reserves). My guess is that this is within his reserve boundary by the way he mentions that some of the younger generation have passed on and it might be one of their traps. Either way, its hard to place judgement on a place where there is a system in place to regulate trapping. Hope you learned something new, have a great day!

I'm so grateful for you taking your valuable time to teach us wilderness etiquette and survival. It takes a great, humble, compassionate, full of empathy man; possessing a heart full of wisdom and truth to repent before the sun goes down. Ephesians 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: It's a great and wonderful blessing to witness your loving kindness towards the inexperienced and thoughtless trapper or perhaps elders who may have long passed. That person who cut that living tree down essentially killing the tree just for it's chaga, let the evil spirits of selfishness and greed rule him/her! Not only did they hurt nature's balance, they hurt theirselves and all of us too! We shall lift them up to our Lord for correction and discipline where they may see the error of their ways being truly repentant of their selfish and greedy action in Jesus name, amen! And we shall leave our burdens of frustrating hurt and anger at the alter where they shall plague us no more as we cast them into the sea of forget! May another tree take it's place and grow from it's roots even stronger than the first and at a fast pace to desire it's quicker maturity! Thank you for taking us with you; this has been a learning adventure filled with great wisdom and spirituality! Praying rich and bountiful rewards upon you Robert! I know a guy in Alaska that makes tapered boxes like that. But he couldn't be the only one.

I'd guess the horizontal pole at 2:17 is for squirrel snares. They're usually set by a midden.

There are no inhumane traps only inhumane trappers - neglected traps, to large of traps for certain game etc...
