The schema is the low level database definitions, whereas the data model is a higher level conceptual representation of it. For example, you may conceptually define a model and then at a later point have the software you’re using to define that model generate the database schema.

I'm not a huge fan of ISO standards as they tend to ossify, and stifle useful creativity. Having said that, the ISO 10303-11 is fairly benign and mostly obvious advice such as "the language be parsable by humans and by computers for the purpose of formal validation;"

@@Intricity101 Well if we build great standards to take NativeCAD models for data exchange and long term archiving. The validation could be automated. So taking exporting or importing is not something the design team needs to manage. My recommendation is to make sure your NativeCAD is capable of taking your design data and putting it into the neutral format of ISO 10303-242. Then if your company feels the need for data exchange or long term archiving get involved with the fine people that are working the standards now.

A schema is a physicalized data model onto a database. A data modeling tool allows you to design your model, but then allows you to produce the database schema related to your design.

The vendor is going to have a standard data model for whatever type of company you are. For example if you're a Retailer then they'll likely have a Retail Data Model which would be a cookie cutter model for a "Standard" retail scenario.

He says "quote unquote standard", which in writing would look just like the word 'standard' in quotes. In spoken language when you say quote unquote something, it means that this something would be written in quotes. It works both for an actual quotation, and for showing that the word/phrase is misplaced, for instance to express sarcasm.
