Question: Can you use a NAS unit like the Synology DS420+ to run surveillance as well as photo storage/sharing?

You can run open-source www.home-assistant.io/integrations/motioneye/, HomeAssistant & MotionEye on AmberPRO as home server, not only to run surveillance, but also smart home devices at home. Photo storage/sharing is a native service with Amber iX App.

How do I replace the HDD for a degraded disk so Amber recognizes it?

It looks like they mainly reliant on Docker to provide third party apps which the likes of Synology provide for free. Im sure it might change as time goes by but its not a good start for a company to do such at this price mark considering the low spec and price of the drives provided with it at around £35-40 each plus the lack of remote access to advanced settings. by IP alone ,even if likes in a bios it had been a basic/advanced selectable option. They may have done better to collaborate with one of the free nas software vendors and designed a bespoke interface for it offering at a much lower price. Design wise given the size required for the drives its a very big box which without looking up the specs (Edit: 170x160x160), seems bigger than the synology DS419Slim four drive system (105x142x120) @ around £350.

Thanks for the comments. AmberPRO does provide "Support Anywhere" for remote access with advanced settings without accessing user's personal files.

@@ambereurope Thanks for the prompt response, but thats kinda not covering the bases I brought up i.e. Cost, Size, Access through IP.

@@Arachnoid_of_the_underverse Thanks for your replies. For size, we need to put x86 mainboard, Wifi, fan, + 2 HDD, it's already very compact, cost also higher than ARM based one. Access through IP can be still activated by users under Amber OS, we don't recommend this for non-tech users.
