The most under-rated guy ever on the radio. Movie star handsome, brilliant songwriting, great singing, I think he got written off as a "pop pretty boy" and didn't get the airplay deserved or the promo effort from his label.
The change was bubbling in 1990. Grunge was about to blow up. Jude Cole and Brent Bourgeois' solo album were released the same year. Back then it was considered dad music in today's terms.
I would have never got this close to hearing or the slide of his guitar ,if the fellow ( Jack) passed away. Never did I ..... Umm. You never know who you sitting next to.
I just saw an interview with him that came out just last year, and he confessed to not liking the tour part of selling records, and coupling that with his desire to make the music that he wanted to make instead of trying to be a popstar made him had more into a producer and songwriter mode instead of trying to be in front. Now it all makes sense. He made three nearly perfect albums, and it wasn't what he really wanted.
Spring 1990...I do not know about any of you but 1990 was an awesome year for me! This and many other songs from that year were a significant part of that season of my life, thanks Jude Cole!
Used to dance like a maniac to this tremendous song. For the longest time I only knew Jude Cole by his voice. When I finally saw him on television I thought "This guy should be a huge rock star with his movie star looks." All I can guess is that he has too much integrity to play the success game. "Won't you please, please pick up the phone." // Jude Cole deserved / deserves big time success.
This song is absolutely my favorite and it reminds me of the great talent that is lost to time. The stuff they call music now in the 21st century can't hold a candle to Jude. He gave so much from the soul and you won't see this kind of brilliance from any singer in this day and age because they have little to give from their soul. It's such a shame that we can't see this type of talent anymore.
This guy should of been bigger. I know it's a cliche, but still. He had a bunch of great albums that got lost in the shuffle and were swept under the rug. Ok, I'm done.
Great soft rock song from 1990. The 80s type songs of the early 90s are some of the most underappreciated because that sound was already fading away. I remember this on VH1 as a kid
This song should have been bigger but apparently got drowned by so many hits here and there in 1990 that you can’t choose what to listen. There’s Wilson Philips, Extreme, Sinead O Connor, heck even Mariah Carey, Maxi Priest. It was actually the period between 1988-1991 that almost all songs that came out were worthy of recognition.
The reclusive man, none of us know why?,he can rock, give it blues,he can take us anywhere,we won't let him face that world alone,we have been there, all alone, no good, together, plenty of good,we believe in you
The band members were crashed and I was driving them and pulling the trailer back to S. Carolina from Jacksonville. All I could think about was getting home to my sweetheart when I heard it for the first time back then. I still play it on those long trips back to her. We have never had a fight, but I feel lonely away from her. That night was very special when I melted with her and this will always be my coming home anthem.
I know Jude ... he's a home towner. Picked him up at LAX in the summer of 1978 when I lived in Placentia. He's the real deal ... player, singer, writer, visionary and still a good freind. Let's just say, fame & fortune (or lack there of) has changed him little over the years. Puts on his pants like everbody else AND God has allowed him a very genuine gift - his voice, his hands & his heart. Hey UTHS East Moline, IL!!!
I always wondered who sang this song; I just heard it on one of my local classic radio stations. I agree...definitely underrated without the acclaim he deserved. I think it was a classic example of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. By 1990 rap/r&b music was all the rave and taking over the airwaves. Meaningful, well-written pop songs by "mature" artists like this simply got brushed under the rug, so to speak.
Yeah Butch, I had a shared apt. w/ a lounge band in orange co. I moved to LA in April of '78. Jude & I were 4 years apart in high school here in IL. He followed me out west & admitted to it being the first time he ever flew when he was on Leno. I only stayed for a year (I'm a player too) - he stuck it out & we've had very different fortunes. 30 plus years later, we're good - glad I know him.
I have been playing that tape and CD to death… Absolutely one of the best performers! He found another calling then performing himself, but good he’s back again making music for us to enjoy!!
Very true Marshal! May 1990, I can't believe it my self. *Seems like it was just yesterday this was out...What phenomenal song & musician. Happy 30th Mr. Jude Cole.
Criminally underrated artist. This album had zero promotion. I discovered him & the album when I won it from a south Florida radio station & played it til it wore out. This song is amazing. He plays dobro, 12 & 6 string guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, produced, arranged, and what a stunning singer & songwriter. I heard he stopped writing & performing & manages other artists now. What a shame someone so talented got zero support from his record label & the industry.
Since I was one of the people that DID promotion for Reprise, I can tell you A. That you are TOTALLY wrong as the staff LOVED this album and the label was behind it 100%. B. One should never speak without knowledge on a topic they most apparently know NOTHING about.
I remember the fiirst time I heard this song. It is one of a handful in my whole life that had me set to buy the album before the lyrics even started. Then, I bought it, and found another two songs (Hallowed Ground and Time for Letting Go) that are at least as great. Why this work was not a hge hit, I'll never understand.
it's because the bottom fell out of that 80s pop-rock sound just when Jude hit the scene in the early 90s. The 80s sound persisted into the new decade for a few years, but by late '93, the 80s were over and everything was either grunge or acoustic. Jude was unlucky with the timing, maybe he had some personal problems as well, who knows.
@@willritter4076 You're 100% right. The pop chart shifted between 1991 and 1992. The 80s were over and the kids wanted something different. Hell, I was at a town's baseball game in 1990 and the girls in the crowd were wearing flannel shirts. They predicted the trend...but they were cute. I love South Fayette/Bridgeville. Morgan Park had the cutest girls for 6 months.
An unsung hero if there ever was one. Precociously talented. Everything, the complete package, with one crucial, essential element: sincerity. A View from 103rd Street is a masterpiece. Should’ve easily been album of the year. Song by song, note by note, riff by riff, there’s not a wasted moment. Don’t know or disagree? Put it on, in, whatever, drop the needle or just push play. Prove me wrong. It’s even sequenced perfectly. Always gets me through the night.

In 1990, I was not a fan of pop music, it was either metal or classic or progressive rock, I worked at a music store when this album came out, I loved every song on the album, and still listen to it religiously. and got his three albums after this one, and loved them too. I finally last week found this album on vinyl, wish the others came out on vinyl, especially Start The Car.
So many of us are glad you had an open mind to different music. Jude Cole is a damn genius. I listen to everything too and keep an open mind. I would listen to Jude Cole one day and listen to the Stone Roses another day.
A driving rock song, one of those with the sun roof down and the sun at your back and hitting at least seventy on the freeway, just a dream for me,I can't drive,I can dream though, that's what rock is all about, Jude is behind that wheel, take us all home son
takes me back to living in Cairns for six months back in 90 ....when this was on the radio......driving round in a conncil truck...great song .. Leslie
Rocked this album driving with my buddy from Sacramento, CA to Syracuse, NY in late August 1990. Eventually Jude Cole married Michelle Pfeifer's sister and I believe they are still together today. Great memories of another life.
Thanks for Professor of Rock reminding me I use to sing this at the top of my lungs while commuting to college. Sad state of radio made me completely forget this song.
Man I sure do miss the 1990's especially now with this crazy corona virus going on in 2020. Take us all back to the wonderful 1990's. The world was much better ❤️😘
I absolutely forgot how much i loved him back in the day. I ran across his CD yesterday and I haven't stopped listening to him. I LOVE HIS VOICE!!! I can' t believe i know all the words.
One reason he didn't make it as big as he or his fans may have wanted was because the contemporary icon of late 80s/early 90s young American Caucasian male solo pop-rock singer/writer/guitarist was already filled by Richard Marx, who dominated with 14 top 20 songs, 9 of those top 10, which included 3 number 1s. However, this is one of my favorite songs of all time, none of which are Marx's.
Start The Car and View From 3rd Street were absolute masterpieces that should have been huge . Not a weak song on either . Tell The Truth is one of the best songs ever performed .
This album came out as grunge was emerging, and pop-rock was going on a decade-long hiatus. It's not so much that it wasn't promoted, the world just completely shifted on him....a classic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
omg!! I am making a playlist of songs from 1990 (20 yrs ago)..most of the songs I remember! I havebeen putting in ones that made a decent climb, but don't recognize hoping to find one like this!!! 20 yrs later and I remember!!
What a great song, takes me back to the 90s. Absolutely a brilliant song. This guy is extremely underrated. I hope he is sitting wealthy somewhere enjoying his life.
Exactly, one of the most underated musicians and song writers. It boggles my mind when you here give lame brain dj,s and program directors of Chicago radio stations give such dumb excuses.for not playing his music. Just his appearance on David Letterman singing Start the Car shoud have catapuled him. That performance was great and the place rocked and as David Letterman said "they blew the roof of that dump"!!
Freakin hell he was so damned good looking, probably still is. I've been listening to his music since the 80's. Never understood why his career didn't skyrocket. 3:)
@rockerchic63 He is big behind the scenes! He has a production company with keifer Sutherland, has been the brother in law of Michelle Pfeiffer since 1993, manager and songwriter of the band Lifehouse! His credintials are long!! Very talented guy!
Despite the sound of this album being pretty 80s, the vibe and feeling is more serious and in step with the real 90s so I could see it coming out in like 1994. It might've been both a little behind and ahead of its time for 90-91!

I couldn't agree more!
He's still a stunningly handsome man in his 60s. One of the countless "Should've Been..."
One of my favorite songs from 1990, when I was 12. I still like this song to this day!
Early 90s , this guy was all over the radio in Chicago.
Dude was solid , some good songs.
Why wasn't this guy a superstar?! So much talent, too bad so many people missed out, he is awesome.
Two words alternative rock.
@SEZWAH its better to have a hit than to have none at all.
I think had this come out in the early to mid 80s it would have been huge. In 1990, tastes were already changing and he hit a wall.
@@cbl1984I agree that this man was ahead of the times.🎶
Jude Cole is an amazing talent...not sure why he didn't make it big. Love his music and musicianship.
Great song, underrated artist.
VERY UNDERATED MUSICIAN
Very
Amazing songwriter, vocalist and musician!
I was wondering what happened to Jude Cole. One hit wonder of 90?
Love Jude Cole’s 🎶 Music 🎸
"A View from 3rd Street" is great from start to finish. Love every song on it.
This album is truly A Gem. I love all his music. Such an underrated artist.
I have 3 of his CD's and have playing them for 20+ years. Will never understand why he was not a superstar. Talent, voice one of the best.
He put his heart and soul in backing the band Life house....they were quite popular for awhile
Jude Cole had the misfortune to be putting out great 80s pop/rock in the early 1990s... the right music at exactly the wrong time.
Probably he didn't like little kids like most modern super stars.
I just saw an interview with him that came out just last year, and he confessed to not liking the tour part of selling records, and coupling that with his desire to make the music that he wanted to make instead of trying to be a popstar made him had more into a producer and songwriter mode instead of trying to be in front. Ok, I'm done.
I agree. I was lying in bed and this song kept playing in my head, that's what brought me here.
If Alternative Music hadn't become so huge so quickly, he might've been a 90s staple for sure.
I listen to Jude every other day ,73 yrs
Wore out my CD, can someone produce them , $1,000,000 Sales immediately
great song!! loved Jude
Jude Cole Is One Of My favorite singers of all time 😍💖😍💖😍💖😍💖😍💖😍💖😍💖😍💖😍

Great soft rock song from 1990. The 80s type songs of the early 90s are some of the most underappreciated because that sound was already fading away. I remember this on VH1 as a kid
This artist is very much under appreciated. Great song. So is “Start the Car”.
Wonderful lyrics ❤️😘😘 tonight I am here..arms to hold you tight and not let you go

these are the recording artists I grew up listening to
Pop-rock perfection. This and "Start the Car" are still my two favorite Cole songs.
Still love Worlds Apart - could listen over and over and never tire of the vocal and instrumental harmonies!
This song and House Full of Reasons are my favorites by him.
This dude should have been much more popular. Great musician. I dated a woman who looked like the woman in this video, she was absolutely nuts. :)
I'm 35 and just discovered this song today thanks to SiriusXM 90s on 9. I am shocked I never encountered it before. I played it 20 times already.

I listened to his CD when I would drive around. It was October, smell of fall in the air, his sings bring me that memory.

Top 20 pop hit from 1990. Very underrated indeed. Like the expression "timing is everything. "
