I would tend to choose whichever color scheme better fit into my overall wardrobe.

From a Google enquiry: What did Scots wear before kilts? "léine"
That clothing was called the léine which was a long shirt-like tunic. The léine was made from linen which was accessible and cheap. Often dyed yellow using horse urine and later with saffron, the léine was also worn with braies which were like baggy shorts.
Kilts only came to Scotland in the sixteenth century.

On the red and green heavy tartans I think Modern looks way too much like a Christmas decoration

YES - instead of looking Christmas for a summer wedding - the weathered option imho is the better choice for at least my clan tartan :D

@LeaperiteProductionsLLC yeah literally all 3 of the other palletes look less Christmasy than modern if your tartan is a red and green as the dominant 2 colors.

Perhaps a musician might compare the different color palettes to playing the same song in a different key.

Until the invention of synthetic dyes of the nineteenth century, the dyes available, in the Highlands, were subdued, less vivid. To modern eyes those tartans would look 'weathered'.

My family is the Beveridges (aka Beverage) which have been traced to 1303 Scotland. We've always used the District of Fife tartan. I could find custom kilts with that, when I could find it, but it was bonkers beyond my price range. So I have a kilt that is in my budget with a tartan that is a lot like the Fife. The color scheme is the same green with red stripes and the stripes are a lot like Fife. My first kilt was a utility kilt. I didn't know our tartan, so I bought solid brown. My favorite color is brown. I figured that was a safe route, particularly since its a modern kilt. I aim for authenticity and respectfulness to the tradition. I have a friend with a kilt - leather with chains. He's going to be seen, to be goth, whatever. Its a costume. Mine is not a costume.

I challenge your idea that early dyes were muted. Plant dyes can be very vivid, but fade with washing and time in the sun. Faded and purposely muted aren’t the same.

Understood and agreed. That's why I pointed out that the original tartans looked similar to the Modern (darker) color palette. The Ancient color palette was meant to mimic plant dyes lightening in color over time. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
