The drumming on this song is pure genius. One of the many examples of why Mike Portnoy is the GOAT.
Him pushing up his glasses in the middle of a sick fill is so awesome and nerdy at the same time
What’s really gonna blow your mind is that I just happened to be reading your comment at the moment Mike did what you commented about.
A perfect balance between tecnhic and "feel". As someone once said "Mangini plays drums in Dream Theater, Portnoy IS Dream Theater".
Imagine how I feel, I just realised how good this guy is. He might be the GOAT
Portnoy takes a fundamentally different approach to playing the drums from most others. He makes them a foreground instrument, following and interplaying with gutair, bass, and keyboard music. Mangini took almost a decade to understand that this is the style of drumming people love with dream theater. Listening to the latest album, I finally hear mangini playing more like portnoy.
DisAgree. Dream Theater sound comes from John Petrucci, not Portnoy. Thats why the albums without Portnoy still sound like dream theater.
This one song is an absolute masterclass in technique and musicality. It's got everything it and executed so perfectly to highlight the music in the other parts. Honestly, this is why I fell in love with dream theater back in the early 90s.
@@arbi9506 They said that they were the qualities of the music that they fell in love with, which are incidentally exemplified in this song. Use your brain homie.
7:56 best part of the entire song. Amazing.
fuck yes dude! that’s portnoy’s stamp for me, stack cymbal on downbeat, playful with ride and hihat + the tiny tomtoms
The drumset and cymbals sound fantastic. Whoever tuned this setup and selected the cymbals did an awesome job. The recording/sound engineering is flawless. Oh yeah, and Mike just did his thing, as usual. 👏 😂
I love this guy. When he went to Iraq to play for the troops with Avenged Sevenfold, at the end of the concert at the meet and greet, I told him I was there when he played with Dream Theater in Puerto Rico, I think it was in 2006, and he opened his eyes big and went: "really!" then we hugged.
That's disappointing to hear. I thought he and the other dream theater guys had a more critical mindset regarding wars and the US-army
@@alexgrether3662 you’re really gonna bag on him and the band for playing for the troops in Iraq?
@@alexgrether3662 I guess you and people like you will never undesrtand this, but we sacrifice a lot. Just not being there for our families. Missing our kids events, etc… It gets lonely for many over there. Artists that come to perform for the Soldiers see beyond politics and the defense industry. They perform for us, the human being Soldier, and let us know we are never forgotten.
I can’t believe this man isn’t in this band anymore. It’s heartbreaking.
@alphadrummer5289 Yes that's exactly what I said. Mangini is on a whole other league as a drummer. To each their own, I am team Mangini all day. That doesn't mean I don't love Portnoy, he's actually the reason I started to play drums. But Mangini can play Portnoy's parts effortlessly. Portnoy can't play Mangini's parts... it's facts.
@@swindle2240 been a fan of Dream Theater for 30yrs. Portnoy will never have to learn Mangini’s parts because the. fans only want to hear the shit that MP helped write. I’ve seen them in concert around 20 times and Mangini can’t play like MP either.
@@brosphbehemoth6141 yeah mate I dunno what fans you're talking about lol you're stuck in 2009 then while I have basically a whole new catalog to enjoy... a different one and imo a drumming masterclass Portnoy couldnt fathom.. but its my opinion
@@swindle2240 I’m not stuck anywhere homie. I have all the post MP stuff and I’ve seen them every tour they’ve done with Mangini. There’s no doubt the music they write now is missing MP’s influences.
Also the encore for the Top of the World tour….The Count of Tuscany. Portnoy shit. I’m out sonnnnn
HOLY SMOKES!!!!! Some of your greatest work, Mike!!!! You put a million hours into this song!!!! WOW--HARD WORK PAYS OFF!!!! Thank You for sharing, Brother!!! ❤️🤟😊🇺🇸🙏🎶🥁💪
No denying this dude can play: he is tight yet loose; fast and free. Though, I can't help but notice, how much of his drum vocab comes from Peart.
Yeah true. When I really got into Rush I noticed wow Portnoy really took a lot from Neil. And by that I don't mean copying or stealing. Just influence of course
So, where would Peart's drum vocab come from? Drummers are inspiration for other drummers. We take pieces that we have heard, loved and obsessed over. Just like any good drummer, they tend to inspire others to take it one step further. Portnoy is an amazing drummer, not be compared with Peart as opposed to regarded in the same way. Generational differences and subjective opinion are another thing.
Who among them is truly 'original'? Through the Ages has the beat of war's drum transmogrified. Search and see even your influences present; Mike's equipping is gleaned via generations. However, composing such diverse signatures in time cannot be imparted from mere influence. May you present such potent and compelling compositions as contained here my friend. Good luck.
This is still one of my favorite DT songs, because the drum arrangement and orchestration is just so badass. In fact, this is one of my favorite albums from them ... CD1 just has so many badass songs and drums on it. In fact, I think it was songs from this album that I first heard from DT that immediately made me a fan.
same here... 6° is awesome, and this has to be one of my fav songs of all time
No joke, this song is way harder to play than Dance of Eternity. Nailing down Mike's groove patterns is haaaaaaaard.
Besides Mike's amazing playing, what I also notice is how ergonomically set up his kit is... That's not always easy to do with larger drum kits. He easily can reach everything, which makes playing so much easier.
4:01 Oops, the glasses.
His feelings about drumming is so natural, I really love his style !
8:41 this part got me when i was 13 years old.... 14 years later and i still like it
New to Mr. Portnoy. He is amazing! I have shared this video with others and we are all in awe. I am 66 years old and in my life I have seen some of the best. Mr. Portnoy has moved to the top. I hope to hear more! Thank you for sharing your great talent. You remind me of Dr. Viosy. He flips his hair back and keeps playing! Maybe you two should get together?
I don’t know if you have heard these other guys, but check out Gavin Harrison, or Marco Minneman, master prog drummers!!! Basically anyone Steven Wilson uses... 😃
Gavin Harrison - totally different style, un-freakin-believable machine of a drummer
I can’t even remember my name while ordering pizza. How the hell does this dude remember 1200 10 minute songs.
Uh because you're not whatsoever aa successful as Mike Pornoy is
@@johnnyfuckingmetalplaylist1489 Dude, know when to not answer a rhetorical question.
Si fueras baterista lo entenderías. Yo puedo tocar sus canciones. Lo que no tengo es su maravilloso equipo. / If you were a drummer may be understand that. I can play his songs. But i don't hace his amazing drum set
This is one of the best DT songs, very underrated... And one of the best drum lines of MP
This is when a legend level turns into a god level. Mike portnoy is a living legend. You rock..
I keep watching mike and Danny Carey, trying to figure out who is better and all I can come up with is that I’m jealous
Both are absolutely amazing drummers in their own style. Let's appreciate we got both!
They are all great drummers, Thomas Lang as well. But he had a bit of trouble and a few little fails during his auditions for Dream Theater. All those drummers are unique and they are on very high level and have their own style, but a comparison makes no sense in my opinion. In the Technical Death Metal and Djent Genre are extreme technical and fast as fuck drummers, but I would never say that they are „better“ than Portnoy or somebody else.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer I don’t think so. Lang has chops but he’s unpolished. Same with Portnoy. Danny is polished and refined....effortless.
Wow! I was never a huge DT fan, However, I was ALWAYS a fan of their musicianship.. Amazing artists! Mike is a fellow Long Islander and his control and ability is up there with the very best. What a drummer and what a band..
i totally feel the same. Real needs to recognize real haha, the music was never my taste but the musicianship was always amazing
I never noticed, but the beats at the end of the music are the same as the beginning, but backwards...like closing what was once opened...
I'm not a drummer, but I have this DVD. This is one of my favorite parts. I love the breakdown and the execution.
What a pleasure to watch one of the best drummers in the world, moreover to see him play one of his dream theater songs from an overhead camera. Oh yeah, nicely laid out kit too, I had a set like back in the dat day but the difference are his floor tom positions, multiple hi hats etc, make it so he never needs to cross his arms when playing...very cool.
I never really noticed he doesn't cross his arm's while playing. Thanks for the observation. Truly one of the greatest drummers EVER✌
2005 i played this album cassete on my tape player... from night until morning,,,
I'm glad to see JP and MP recording together finally.. It's not Dream Theater but it's better than nothing!
Wait, did they start up Liquid Tension again?
Ah, Terminal Velocity. Nice! 👍
@@zZrEtRiBuTiOnZz LTE3 is confirmed by Jordan Rudes. But not sure when.
He looks like a good drummer, he should play for big bands, like Dream Theater.
he is and still and forever will be dreamtheater... DT's drummer is always Portnoy... maginis great..but. PORTNOY IS DT
He is the founder of Dream Theater, even his father who named the band.
Heru Himawan T Oh thank you, if it weren’t for you I wouldn’t have acquired this precious piece of knowledge. You’re the hope of mankind.
He does not play drums, he sings on them, he reads a play, he plays life.
I attended a Billy Cobham drum clinic in the '70s. He said "I sing with my drums." A lot of what Mike plays reminds me of Billy. They're both fantastic musicians
@@hamonanganmonangasg5481 I am afraid I will have to agree with you. He is good and technical, but never as expressive as in Drean Theater. The only exception is in AV7F, when he had just left DT. Winery Dogs and all other acts come short of what he´s done in DT.
That time signatures and perfection his playing over them. Unbeliveble
Oh Lord. It's been a lifetime since I last listened to this song.
Mike is incredible… this is when jazz meets heavy metal meets progressive rock…wow
The Heart Of Dream Theater Ever...
YESSSS!!! This is the third video down when you type "The great debate" into the search bar. That's crazy
what an amazing drumkit
& drummer
The first notes of DT i heard was 6 o´clock (Mike),the first member i saw
when i was at their first concert was Mike Portnoy standing behind his drumkit talking to the audience.
Still miss his presence
That intro build up is the best thing I think I've ever heard.
Por este bro me hice baterista ! 25 años de ser tu fan! Master!!!
Geddy and Alex if ever in the future may be looking to start something again...
He was right. DT should have a 5 year hiatus. They have been repititive.
I don't complain anymore about him leaving, and I'm happy enough with what we've gotten, but I would love to see Portnoy return.
He is right, this non stopping circle of recording-album-tour-live album really puts the things o quick. Yes there are good songs in the last albums but It's true a hiatus should refresh everybody and at this point it should have ended years ago!!!
I’ve been a HUGE DT fan since I was in the 6th grade. Without Portnoy, I don’t listen to their mangini albums. Only the older Portnoy material
Oh but don’t forget The Astonishing. One day it will be a Broadway sensation 😳
One of the best I've ever seen. Unbelievable playing.
@@williamewingjr8897 I'd put him in the B category... A and S are still really something else. Guys like Larnell Lewis, Dave Weckl or Marco Minneman could all play this with their eyes closed easy.
I love this song and Mike my favorite progressive drummer of all time) His thought and play are worthy of attention! These are his best years since Images and Words👍🤘🔥
What do you mean by these years? The year this song came out or the year this video came out?
I've been blessed to see him and Peart (R.I.P)in person. Two of the greatest ever.
Best UA-cam DT channel ever.
These drums sound amazing!! ❤🤗
His drumming has always spoken for itself He's a Legend period
The snare switch was smooth af
I love how he drags and rush to make the Song sound heavier or faster. Just amazing
The sound quality of this song on your channel is better than on Spotify. I don’t even know how, but it’s great.
This song is exhilarating, the build up is amazing...might be my favorite DT song.
It's nice to watch Mike so closely. It really helps guitarists like myself to think more like a drummer when we are writing drum parts.
What a beast! This is a long and complex song!! Lots of MP fills too which are just a treat
My fav drummer all time!!! Epic beats!!! Love how mike adds so much to song
Im amazed by his control at switching the snare from closed to open
He personally developed a pedal-activated snare switch to change from tight snares, loose snares and snares off....look Ma, no hands!!!! If I recall it was named after his son Max
@@69CamaroSS although in this video he is doing it totally 'normally' and manually, which is so much more difficult.
@@69CamaroSS MAX his son was mentioned in Max staxx ( cymbal 2 layer cake setups) Melody his daughter is mentioned in his snares Melody Master 12 and 14"
absolutly fantastic, like almost everything before....Hat down again...
Esto es lo que se extraña de DT. Epicidad y musicalidad! con MP de regreso...creo será más posible que regresen piezas que será clásicos inmediatos
This is my favourite DT album, tied with MTPT2 and FII on second. Epics in the true sense of the word
One of the Legend in Drum History.
Man... everything sounds so beautiful
dueling floor toms is so enjoyable to hear - I want to buy a drum set now.
Great to see Mike working on Jon Petrucci’s new solo album. So the door is never closed.
This is one of the best Songs DT has made since their beginning!!!
its a masterpiece and seriously a unique one .. has a weird taste
Great song definitely, but I wouldn't say one of the best since Images. Count of Tuscany, The Looking Glass, Barstool Warrior or I Walk Beside You takes that title but that's just my opinion. Long live DT
Mike introduced me to the NEXT LEVEL DRUMMER!!!! Like who plays this damn good ??? We all know DT will never be the same without him 😭 If there are ALIENS 👽 among us ...... HE IS ONE !!! Such a pleasure to see and hear him play live !!! I’m absolutely blown away!!! Mike .... You are really that good and you know it !!! You WILL go down in history as one of the GREATEST OF ALL TIME and you deserve it brother!!!
I have watched this video on UA-cam more times than any other DT song. Masterful playing technique. The 3:00 mark seperates the men from the boys. Watch some other drummer cover this song and that is the part they skip over or dumb down. The man doesn't really get a break until @9:30, 4/4 groove.
Had this on VHS and then DVD cuz the awesomeness on display and Mike's excellent tutorials.
Perpaduan skil & harmoni yg indah, jago tp ga show off, keindahan bermusik
Simply world's greatest drummer.
His drumming is so musical.
Mike Portnoy you rock!
amazing I wanna listen to the new album with JP
I never was a DT fan, but this just changed my mind. Incredible stuff :O Edit : Portnoy here reminds me of Billy Cobham a whole lot. Phenomenal control and a lot more dynamics than I was expecting. I like how every cymbal has a precise pitch while the drums sort of blend into each other, kind of like the reverse of how most drummers would play. I think this man is a genius!
The GOAT, he can play anything but nobody can play his complete live set with his perfection and facility, incredible sensation he has time to do something else in addition of playing perfect drums.... crazy
I had the chance to see him live several times, he played each time at that level, the Portnoy level; so I think we don't really realize anymore
I'm vaguely aware of DT and Mike Portnoy.. I know they're very technical performers...
I thought this video was Portnoy's opinion on some great debate plaguing drumming today...
The polyrhythm he plays on the hihat pedal at 7:41 is Mike's hat off to Neil
Absolutely amazing!👍😎🥁🎶
Приветик спасибо за выступления 🙏🙏🙏💙💛👍🌹🌹🌹
Simply incredible. I’ve been listening to these guys for half my life, and I’m still amazed. The musicality and overall brilliance in this one performance are staggering.
This was amazing to watch! Mike is a genius and those drums sound sooooo good.
*This the absolute best sounding kit and cymbal setup I've ever heard*
He is like a perfect mix of Neil Peart and Danny Carey! This whole song actually sounds like a mix of Rush and Tool haha! Definitely need to listen to more DT!
Everyone needs to listen to some more DT. Octavarium, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, and Count of Tuscany are my favorite DT songs. That's about an hour and a half of music right there
@@nj1255 this song and Home are the ones that sound like Tool the most. But for a heavy album try "Train Of Thought"
@@nj1255 Normally DT doesn't sound like Tool, only this song and Home have that Tool vibe. And yes, Mike's biggest influence is Neil Peart, that's why his drumming is so similar to Danny's, since he's been influenced by Neil too. In order to get into DT, listen to their albums in their entirety. I'd recommend starting in chronological order and you can skip the 1st one if you want. It's not bad, but I never listen to it and DT is my favorite band.
High performance drumming at it's finest. Untouchable.
The ride cymbal has an amazing sound... OMG!!!!

How could anyone give this a thumbs down?
Like a fine wine, Mike just keeps getting more better-er.
yeah....it sounds wierd but its like hes matured....its like more feeling in his playing,,,,peace
This guy is still unbelievable to me, just peak. And this song has everything that, is missing from today’s Dream Theater. Mainly Portnoy ...
The musicality is lacking from Mangini who of course chops wise blows Portnoy out of the water.
@@michaelcarter8620 He maintains that illusion by playing everything super soft. It makes drumming much easier.
MP faz a música dele, é muito fácil perceber que se for tirado todos os instrumentos a bateria seria suficiente para curtir. A técnica, feeling, a escrita, o sentimento! a bateria é dele, ele abusa sem pena. Saudade imensa de você no DT.
Holy hell!! What a SIC drummer he is. Damn!
Portnoy’s playing makes all seems easy to play
This guy is amazing, I cannot believe still that he left DT cuz he was bored basically. The technicallity and difficulty jus in this song from my perspective is unbelievable.
Beautiful skills, unbelievable🤘
A prodigy of drum composition. MP has developed some of the greatest drum melodies ever. He supports the music line adding not just accuracy and rithm but amazing music lines itself and melodies.
No need to be a drummer or a DT fan to watch this. Here's the man.
I would kill to have Portnoy's kit (and him playing it) as a midi extension in EZ/Superior Drummer!
ActuLly on his official website, there is a "play the purple monster" app when you can play his purple momster with the keyboard. There should be a way to download those sounds and put them on a electronic drums
