Portnoy takes a fundamentally different approach to playing the drums from most others. He makes them a foreground instrument, following and interplaying with gutair, bass, and keyboard music. Mangini took almost a decade to understand that this is the style of drumming people love with dream theater. Listening to the latest album, I finally hear mangini playing more like portnoy.

Just like any good drummer, they tend to inspire others to take it one step further. Portnoy is an amazing drummer, not be compared with Peart as opposed to regarded in the same way. Phenomenal control and a lot more dynamics than I was expecting.
