What is the tubing for? I run stingers with fireline a lot on both rabbit and free floating, never using tubing. Am I fudging something up?

You are not doing anything wrong. A lot of the fireline or equivelent trailing material available today are a little limp and don't hold the where we like it. The tubing just holds it in place but also keeps it flexible.
