A song well over 200 years old... such a lovely and singable melody. And the words so well expressing a powerful love. Not does it make one weep for these beautiful reasons, but I weep because society is such today that such a song does not resonate with us. It has no strong beat. It has no hyper-repetition. It has words that require thought. And we think we are evolving.
Wholly agreed. Most people today who are familiar with the song know it from the bomb gag in Warner Bros cartoons, myself included. I sought out the original out of sheer curiosity and I was not disappointed.
My third stanza to this magnificent song: And when you and I have departed this place Of sorrow and sickness and pain, I'll hold thee forever and gaze on thy face, And I’ll dance in thine eyes once again. ‘Tis earthly eyes look through the mirror of years At the passing of beauty and youth, Yet heaven’s eye sees in a world beyond tears -- Truth is beauty, and beauty is truth.
This is an outstanding reading of an exquisite Thomas Moore classic, with a wonderful amount of control, clarity, and emotion in it's execution! Bravo!!!
I was a kid growing up in Nigeria in the 2000s and I watched the old school Looney Tunes (yes, the uncensored and funny ones) on cable and frequently saw the piano bomb joke and that was where I first saw this song referenced and only today did I finally find the original song and it is truly beautiful.
I was just wondering how this gorgeous, emotional tune found its way into a joke and is now, I think, mostly remembered for that. So glad to have Michael's performance.
@@merri-toddwebster2473 - I watched many original Loony Tunes cartoons in my youth and when I grew up and became acquainted with classic music I was surprised at how those old cartoons were using such music. Perhaps because the copyrights had expired?
This poem & tune were on my mind yesterday for some reason, so I went in search of a good rendition. Almost everything out there disappointed, until I found this one. I am so grateful! It is so beautiful I could cry! I spent most of yesterday playing it and singing it and wishing I had someone with whom to share it. The icing on the cake: I "discovered" Anuna, and have been enjoying all the treasures that someone was kind enough to upload. Thank you!
I heard this song sung in the background of a Japanese video. I remembered this song from a long time ago, but not sure of the name. I searched and found it on UA-cam and the sheet music as well. So happy.
Recently a friend of mine who is trained in opera mentioned this song and I said I recalled it from my days in primary school in the early 60s. i often hum it and sang it to my children at bedtime among the bedtime stories and "singalongs" many years ago when they were just tiny things. She humourously "dared" me to sing it, so I did. Seems I sing it with an Irish accent and I've had the words fairly right from way back then. I'm sure I was taught "fade" instead of "change" though.
Here is a triple coincidence (very rare). Two days ago I awoke from my bed with a song in my mind that I hadn’t heard in years: “Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms”. ua-cam.com/video/4p87ncqO6pE/v-deo.html In case you don’t know, this is one of the poems of Irish poet Thomas Moore (along with The Last Rose of Summer) set to music. A few hours later while listening to FM radio I heard Victor Herbert’s Irish Fantasy that incorporates that very same tune. Last night while watching The Treasure of The Sierra Madre, the old prospector, played by Walter Houston, played the same tune twice during the course of the movie on a harmonica.
Pleased to know that I'm not the only one who awakens with a beautiful song in my consciousness. Usually they are songs that I learned in my childhood, songs that I learned from a book of songs that was always present in our house. I still have a copy of that book and sing from it occasionally along with accompaniment from the internet videos.
Believe me, if all those endearing young charms, Which I gaze on so fondly to-day, Were to change by to-morrow, and fleet in my arms, Like fairy-gifts fading away,- Thou wouldst still be ador'd as this moment thou art, Let thy loveliness fade as it will; And, around the dear ruin each wish of my heart Would entwine itself verdantly still! II. It is not while beauty and youth are thine own, And thy cheeks unprofan'd by a tear, That the fervour and faith of a soul can be known, To which time will but make thee more dear! Oh! the heart, that has truly lov'd, never forgets, But as truly loves on to the close; As the sunflower turns on her god, when he sets, The same look which she turn'd when he rose.
Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms(믿어주오, 모든 아름다움이 스러질지라도) Believe me, if all those endearing young charms, Which I gaze on so fondly today, Were to change by tomorrow and fleet in my arms, Like fairy gifts fading away, Thou wouldst still be adored, as this moment thou art, Let thy loveliness fade as it will; And around the dear ruin each wish of my heart Would entwine itself verdantly still.
It is not while beauty and youth are thine own, And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear, That the fervor and faith of a soul may be known, To which time will but make thee more dear! No, the heart that has truly loved never forgets, But as truly loves on to the close, As the sunflower turns on her god when he sets The same look which she turned when he rose!
Warner Bros basically ruined two generations to this song, but it is pretty beautiful. It's also just really hard to act like something isn't going to happen at the word "charms".
Not that the looney tunes gag isn't funny, but with the song's back story and hearing these lyrics, it seems... insulting that it's used so irreverently.
Hannah Strickland a running gag in Looney Tunes that goes back 80 years. Someone (usually Bugs Bunny or the Road Runner) is always tricked into playing this song on a piano or xylophone that's rigged to explode, however they play it off key. When the one who rigged it(Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam or Wile E. Coyote) gets frustrated after repeat attempts, they push them aside, play it correctly and blow themselves up instead.
