  • Brits were cooled by their Ky-ko fans during all those hot, sweaty summer nights in the colonies . These well made fans were designed for easy dismantling and transport. The Model Engineering Co. of London obtained several patents for them in the 1920s. This example includes the original blade "guard" which would not quite pass OSHA consumer safety regulations. Several model variants are known.

This is so cool. I found an advertisement for this fan in the front of an old book I bought and had shipped out of South Africa. The book in question is a copy of the "Manual of Map Reading and Field Sketching" from the British War Office in 1929. The fan in my book is the Ky-Ko Non-electric fan from The Model Engineering Co. Ltd. They were, atleast at the time of this book being published, based at 6-10 Addison Ave. London W.11 and it specifies England instead of the United Kingdom. It's a really cool piece of old school technology and I wish I had one

Nice fan you got there my friend I have just finished restoring one like it! Was given to me by a friend who was going to throw it away as he was cleaning his father's garage it was the engine only no stand and blades, I copied the parts from another one which was missing some parts!!` Now I need a lamp and from your video I could see the original guard!! here is my fan:drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B9Vayrr1B8NuaXpURm5LWjNVVVU&usp=sharing_eid&ts=5670607f

Very nice job! You can use almost any old kerosene lamp if it fits under the cylinder. The engine will run better and the lamp will burn hotter and without smoke if the cylinder and lamp are fitted with a metal "chimney" like you see in the video.

+riderericsson Is it possible to send me some dimensions of the blade guard, also dimensions of those screws and clamps holding the front guard of the lamp. I will be very much obliged:-)) Actually I am a stationary engine collector. Now I have started restoring a Lake Breeze fan it is all rusted up:-(( My email is johnhili.malta@gmail.com
