Fun fact, "Twilight Twinkle" was actually going to be Twilight's name when Lauren Faust created the show but it was changed for some reason, and fun fact number 2 Littleshy, Starlight actually was hiding in the background at the restaurant in this episode.
I think he knew that Starlight was hiding in the background, I imagine that's what the 'nothing is hidden in the background' gag is about.

Since _we_ know Starlight's there, the implication becomes that her inclusion isn't "fun." And... I mean, yeah, it's foreshadowing to the season finale. It wasn't something done to be silly or tell us more about what's going on other than "hey, remember Starlight's still at-large? well, she's here, spying on Twilight." That's it.
They have hinted at a third appearance of Starlight Glimmer can be spotted but no one has found it yet.

This is my headcanon.

Glad that someone agrees with me about how within the context of the show, friendship is a glorified cultist religion that Twilight and company try to force upon others.
This is my biggest grievance with this show. Real friendships are not forced.
And just how are they forced?
@@Longma1 If you keep bugging someone when they have made it clear they want to be left alone, yes, you're essentially forcing your beliefs on them.
There's also the episode where Pinkie Pie repeatedly bothers Cranky Doodle because she just can't stand someone may not want to be her friend. That's not a healthy outlook for a real person, and how the writers thought it's appropriate is beyond me.
It’s also called the Magic of Friendship and the Mane 6 represent the Elements of Harmony, which are meant to be aspects of friendship- even though real friendships almost never contain all six of them, much less magic.
So...yeah, it actually DOES seem like a state religion in Equestria.

My favorite part of this episode is that the flashback to the first episode completely cuts out the part where Minuette, Twinkleshine, and Lemon Hearts say rude things about Twilight. (I think one line is “I think she cares more about books than friends.”)

The show never makes it clear that Moondancer was counting on Twilight's attendance more than anypony else, to say nothing of explaining why! Maybe it was just because they had been so similar? Maybe she had a crush on Twi? [Finding out Twi not only ditched her party but did so to go to a different town & make friends there, probably didn't help!] Whatever the reason, simply having someone, not even necessarily Moondancer herself, point out the fact that she had put excessive emotional weight on Twi's attendance would greatly enhance the lesson, somewhat strengthen the emotional moments, and make Moondancer seem a lot more sane and less terribly immature. "One person skipped my party? My first experiment trying to be this social didn't go perfectly? Giving up on friendship!"
Leaving out that connection between emotional event and 'consequences' allows the comparison to Starlight's loss of her first friend and how its accused long-term effects do or do not understandably follow, to be pretty apt. But then noticing that similarity makes this episode another part of preparing Twilight for the season finale!
True. Plus what about her other friends? Is one bad experience a reason ditch a three other ponies? How they must feel about it? Don't care, right Moondancer.
And next fact. Twilight was a student of the Princess Celestia from moment when she attended a magic school. Princess sent her urgently in Ponyville. But fine Moondancer, your party is more important than a royal duties (what a staying in Ponyville was task too - and how we know, Twilight was little obssesed with these from start, doll incident is nice example). Abandon your other friends because a responsibility of Twilight. Look in the mirror first.
And the best on this episode? Nobody care about fact, that Twilight is princess now. And Moondancer was absolute rude to her, never get her a chance to explain and never had a time for a visit Twilight in Ponyville when she was soooo sad about her leaving.
This episode was only for made Twilight look totally bad for no real reason (we knew she met Minuette and others few times in show - like Candance wedding where they had important part in ceremony. But now we show Twilight as a ignorant bcs Moondancer must be a victim here) and put Moondancer in victim role... But she wasn't a victim. She was totally selfish and a bad friend too, who doesn't care about feelings, reasons or responsibilities of her friends.
I’d like to add a counter point to this. It was fairly obvious that moondancer looked up to twilight and most likely considered twilight her real, closest friend - she even copied her mane style and they clearly understood each other as fillies in a way that other ponies didn’t. I’d argue the other friends were less of close best friends and more likely just other people in the class who ended up being friends with twilight so moondancer became their friend by extension. When moondancer breaks down she places a lot of emphasis on the fact that twilight didn’t show up, if twilight had come but another pony hadn’t it probably wouldn’t have broken her in that way. She probably felt that if the person she thought was her one true friend couldn’t be bothered to come then why should she bother for others or perhaps she felt like she wasn’t deserving of friendship - we can’t know exactly what she felt but we know that it was twilight’s presence that was the make or break from her reaction and from the flashback.

First of all Twilight didn’t ditch moondancer’s party because she was urgently sent to ponyville that happened later, after she said she didn’t want to attend - she ditched because she wanted to research something she read about (something that moondancer would probably have been able to help her do if she had thought to get help from friends). Responsibility for ditching the party falls entirely on Twilight’s hooves and she did it simply because she didn’t care enough at the time to go.
Secondly if you’re claiming moondancer ditched the other 3 ponies at the party because of twilight I’d like to see where that happened because I don’t remember it implying she left the party early because of that but it does make it clear she was deeply hurt by that. Twilight was the one who was friends with the other three ponies more than moon dancer was, moondancer was just friends with twilight so if twilight dipped why should moon dancer be obligated to keep hanging out with them? Especially since her self worth probably took a heavy hit and those ponies probably serve as a reminder of a traumatic event for her. It’s easy to say she overreacted but when you consider the depth of her emotions and her obvious emotional immaturity resulting from the lack of social relationships of any kind in her life, it’s not surprising that she overreacted.
Next, at this point twilight is a princess in name alone - she doesn’t really rule over any land she’s simply stationed in ponyville, many ponies don’t even realise twilight is an alicorn half the time, she’s obviously not as revered or respected in the same way as the other princesses by any pony. Additionally it’s likely that Moondancer resents the fact that twilight became the princess of friendship - how would you feel if the person who in your opinion destroyed your chance at friendships by being uncaring ended up the princess of friendship? It’s not a surprise that Moondancer treats twilight like any other pony and not like a princess because twilight just isn’t that same kind of princess yet, she’s important and beloved but not revered yet.
Finally this episode doesn’t paint twilight in a negative light the aim of this episode is to say that it’s never too late to go back and make amends. It’s common knowledge that before twilight understood the value of friendship she was a kinda selfish jerk who only cared about her studies and not the feelings of those around her (much like moondancer). Twilight chose to return to canterlot with the intent of apologising and making amends with all of her old friends and in doing so she needs to face her past self and right her past self’s wrongs maturely.
In conclusion moondancer isn’t playing victim against mean scary Twilight, the entire situation is complex and the episode is about twilight realising her actions can (and in this case have) had detrimental affects on others
I always hated how they forced her into friendship. She seemed content as she was, until Twilight forced her to relive negative past experiences to satisfy her own guilty conscious. I know it’s just a kids show but is that really the message to send kids about healthy friendship. That you can just bug someone over and over and eventually they will be your friend?
This episode is wrong in so much ways. Is good example for kids abandon your all friends because one hurted you? How Moondancer did? Isolate yourself from others? Twilight never forced her in friendship with her. She wanted apologize to her and show her that she no need close herself from others bcs she failed her in the past, but Moondancer never get her a chance for it. Only shused and abused a princess. No count Twilight as friend? Ok, no problem. And now where is your excuse to be rude to royalty Moondancer? We want a kids teach that you can be rude to autorithies bcs they hurted your feelings in past without even know it?
Point of this episode is about fact, that one bad experience isn't reason for close to others. Yeah, Twilight had a guilt. But fact is she is a princess of friendship. Help Moondancer was her duty. Being asocial and all day alone isn't healty at all. HER HOUSE BREAK APART... Idk, but i don't see it as fine situation. She wasn't a bookworm. She was obsessed.
The main problem of this episode is, that it blame everything on Twilight and made Moondancer a victim. What is next bad example for kids. It's okay don't care about reasons what others had for disappointing you.

I love how no one calls out Moon Dancer on how selfish she is. She would rather Twilight never went to stop Night Mare Moon, effectively ENDING THE WORLD... so Twilight could go to her party. It better have been one AWESOME party if it’s worth the end of the world to Moondancer.
Edit: or at the very least mention Twilight was SAVING THE WORLD.
It's more the fact that Twilight essentially ditched and forgot about them for new friends, not that Moondancer preferred the world to end. She was Moondancer's best friend and Twilight definitely knew about the party for a while. It doesn't take long to write a letter about what's happening and she can't make it or contact them once it's all done.
I definitely have been devastated when this happened to me, and I still would have even if their excuse years later when they finally remember me was that it was to save the world.
@ Cala Maria I wouldn’t say Twilight and Moondancer were best friends, though. If that were the case, the episode doesn’t convey that at all. In the flashbacks, they just come off as colleagues and nothing more. That’s why Moondancer’s behavior makes no sense. Spike was Twilight’s only best friend at the time.
Thats the problem, at the time of Moon Dancer's party Twilight didn't go save the world she went to do an assignment for Princess Celestia and then an entire day passed is when she went and saved the world. Twilight was still a bad friend due to the fact that she could have found countless of ways to AT LEAST say goodbye to Moon dancer and her other friends. You can't just be friends with someone and then ditch them completely for years and then come back unexpectedly and be like "Hey I'm back sorry hahaha" like Twilight did in this episode.

The real sin here is that Moondancer didn’t just move on with her life like everyone else. Why was Twilight SO important to her that without Twilight, she won’t talk to anyone anymore? Lowkey obsessive and unhealthy??
I mean, I'm pretty sure Twilight + the other 3 ponies (whose names I don't remember and I don't want to bother to Google them) were her only friends due to her shyness, Twilight was a very important person to her because they have been friends during childhood (even if Twilight would have much rather read her books), the party was basically the first step to try to overcome her shyness and the fact that Twilight didn't appear hit her hard
And it was basically like a "oh if Twilight didn't come to my party that means she doesn't care about it, and if one of the most important ponies to me doesn't care then anyone won't"

Her behavior still didn’t make sense since the flashbacks only revealed that her and Twilight were colleagues, nothing more. Moondancer’s irrational guilt tripping and emotionalism shouldn’t have been viewed as a call out for Twilight supposedly being a bad friend, but rather a symptom of unhealthiness, as said in the original comment of this thread.

Moondancer is a really nice character.
Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for Moondancer, and Twilight absolutely owed her an apology...but the fact that she is SOLELY blamed for Moondancer's downward spiral into isolation, as if it's her fault ENTIRELY because she skipped a party once...really now? Did Moondancer's other friends mean nothing to her? Doesn't seem very nice to those three, does it?
Her anger and sadness are justified. What's NOT justified is yelling and crying at the pony who made ONE scummy mistake and is trying to apologize for it. The last time we had an overreaction this bad at losing a friend was Starlight Glimmer, and we all know how the fandom feels about that.
