I love the fact that they can fly! It's easy to keep them in an enclosure to easily find each other for breeding, or for finding food, but flight makes them more interesting to me, because it presents a challenge. Not for keeping them from flying, but helping them retain their flight. Over successive generations of breeding with no flight required, eventually some beetles may choose not to fly, or may have a lowered ability to fly, or maybe even not have that ability at all. However, major behavioral or physical alterations to an organism may take hundreds of thousands of generations to achieve this naturally, it can be much more easily managed in a captive setting. I really want sun beetles, but to keep their flight capabilities, I might have to incorporate measures to selectively breed for those who can best fly by using obstacles that can only be escaped or overcome by flight. It only sounds reasonable to keep their natural form in captivity.
I just got some of these and some Figeater Beetles (Cotinis Mutabilis) to live in a community tank with Isopods, bumblebee millipedes and some springtails! They’re all grins at the mo, some are cocooning so excited to see them emerge and develop! 😊
We purchased our sun beetles through your ebay and are now havinh so much fun watching your UA-cam videos! Our sun beetles are excellent specimens we are hoping they will breed so we can have a little colony. They are so fun to watch!
I’m pretty sure they would eat mostly the decaying parts but they might take a bite of the fresh parts every now and then which is not an issue. And I used springtails for my mantis and they bred and bred and bred they started crawling all over him so I personally wouldn’t
T3h Guppy's Bugs all depends on the conditions there kept in. i keep mine at 25 degrees and with no exact guide i get about 350 per female beetle per beetle life
I base it over high humidity. 75% + but give them a hummidity cycle. Mist in the morning and with the great venterlation of an exo terra it provides a good cycle all day. Temps just above room temp works well for me. Heat rises so I place these fairly high in the reptile room
ok so I need some help, I recently got some sun beetle larvae and a few turned into cocoons. I moved the cocoons to the front of their glass enclosure where I can see them and I also keep springtails and isopods in with them and the springtails and isopods have started eating the cocoon until they get inside and can then get to the grubs? This has happened to two of my 10 larvae/cocoons now, why are they doing this and how do I stop it-
Hey I bought a box of the larvae at a shop who sells the larvae as food for reptiles but I knew they would turn out to be these beautiful beetles. They were already big when i bought them and now they are almost 6 centimeters, do you think they will turn into a coccoon soon? I really want the beetles, and for how long will they be in the coccoon stage?
Great questions... Firstly I can't really tell you how long it'll take for them to pupate . You can speed the process up by having them at slightly warmer then room temp. Not to hot tho. Add loads of food . Ie oak leaves are great. They will curl up and go a yellowy colour just before they pupate and when they do caccoon they will be like that for 3 to 6 weeks then out pops an amazing beetle
Oh yea for sure. It's really fun. Keep an eye out in the tub . As they eat loads they poop loads . There poop looks like little pellets. When you can see loads in there then change the substrate out and replace it
Sorry to bother you again but is a heating lamp required? I cant really figure out how to put a lamp above them so it would look ugly when I do. Maybe I can use a heating mat instead?
Hi, I would like to keep these with a millipede or 2 in a communal setup. I’m new to this, how do you suggest to keep breeding in check? I don’t have reptiles to feed them to, I just want to have a cool buggy terrarium and would hate if I had to cull or sell them because the box is too big. Do you have recommendations of cool inverts that could go together with these? Preferable ones that you will see regularly and not too shy
In a large enough tank, like a fish rank size would it be safe to house multiple species of sun and fruit beetles as long as the habitat is correct for all inhabitants ofcourse?
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS my plan is to add some to my milipede Viv and once they breed I'll transfer at least some into their own beetle focused Viv so that there aren't too many beetle grubs disturbing my milipedes.
Probably a stupid question but how do you separate out the eggs so the grubs are in a different set up to develop? Thanks for the video, made me laugh and taught me lots.
I heard you say you use them as part of the clean up crew. this what i intend to do with them, but do you think they will be ok on a therphosa stirmi setup? Can they potentially harm a molting tarantula or can the grubs?
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS its fine. You was quicker than expected. If you follow my Instagram @cjstarantulas you will see if i post it lol. In may try them and just monitor them closely.
I noticed one of my cocoons have broken and I can see the grub - will he be ok and still turn in to a beetle or repair him self ? I don’t want him to die - anything I can do to help him ? And will the beetle or grub try eating to digging at the cocoons ? Great video- really appreciate it :)
a couple of my grubs keep coming back out of their cocoon am I doing something wrong ? ive put food in occaaionally incase there were any left not cocooned ..i think I may have tempted them out.. ive been lightly watering the top layer (of soil lol) as my last bunch never hatched and when I investigated turns out theyd dried up in their cocoons(id previously been told NOT to water them !) theyre in an area that has a quite consistent temperature ive checked it a few times before getting this lot. let me know what you think please theyre not eating ..ive stuck some extra leaf litter just incase they werent quite ready to cocoon and needed more food
try using a deep substrate that is full of leaf multch. try not to touch the grubs as they pupate. normally takes a few days for them to pupate properly . maybe add some wood for them to attach to as they pupate and when they have pupated just leave them slightly burried in the substrate. keep me posted because them coming out of pupation is strange behaviour and id love to know if this helps
NORTHERN EXOTICS ohh perfect !!thank you so much ! youre right some of them do seem to be looking for something to attach to !! non-toxic wood is best right (:? I think ill go for the oak just incase ! ill definitely let you know what happens ! one baby from my last attempt had kept coming out like he was looking for food ( I hadnt added any after they cocooned last time until he came out ..he refused food.. even banana ! ) gonna add more soil and lotttttsss of mulch just incase !!
little random update but i moved the other cocoons to a bigger tank with lots of mulch and extra oak leaves and oak wood theyre doing well :D noones come back out so far and the guy with the half cocoon hahaha hes turned into some weird looking half beetle alien ahaaha he seems quite happy and hes growing well so Im thinking the others are also doing pretty well haha😄✌❤

Heading over to eBay to buy stuff your videos are amazing thank you for all your help
Awesome there dead cool
Says you have nothing for sale at the moment so I’ll just keep looking back
This is a while after you posted this video, but my sunbeetles actually never tried to fly or have flown. Is there something im doing wrong?
It's not an issue if they don't fly. Ive been breeding these for years and only seen it a hand full of times

That sounds like a really lovely setup
Thank u so much for u'r video. I'm planning on getting sun beetles as my first pet bug, and I try to get as many information about them as possible 🤩
Love the video! What do you recommend for heating a plastic tub like that? This will be my first foray into inverts so this is new to me.

aww thank you for the kind words. they are an amazing beetle. have you seen them fly yet? i love that
id love to see a photo of your setup. please send me a picture to our northern exotics facebook page along with a review. nuch appreciated
Just got given 3 grubs of these so hyped for when they morph
Man finally :) Really missing your videos
more videos to come in the future
If I kept them in a bio active would they eat my plants? Or would they just eat the decaying dead parts of them?

Could I keep some of these in my Mourning Gecko set up?
Here from Leopard Gecko's channel👍🏻 just wondering the temp and humidity requirements

Buy them as grubs. Most reptile shops have them as livefood

Beetles, millipedes, cockroach’s and woodlice thrive perfectly together as long as you provide the right conditions
Can a beardie eat the beetle?
Hiya got a question how can you tell male from female sun beetles
In a large enough tank, like a fish rank size would it be safe to house multiple species of sun and fruit beetles as long as the habitat is correct for all inhabitants ofcourse?
Is say it wouldn't be a problem but I've never done it. If I did it I'd add in millepedes aswell just to make it totally cummunal

I don't seperate them. You can do it but there hard to spot with being so small
Do you just leave them until you see the grubs then move them or just leave them all in together? Thanks for getting back to me.
I've left mine all together however you will get better production removing them. I'd imagine some of mine get eaten

I've not got to much intimation or knowledge about them with tarantula if I'm honest. I personally wouldn't risk it especially being such a nice t

Always go for hardwood. Oak is a win
