Honestly, the title track is probably one the best metal tracks ever to be recorded. If anyone would ever ask me what metal is, I would show them that song. It literally has everything a heavy metal song needs, executed at the highest level possible.

Impossible to not have your face twisted into absolute stank when those riffs hit. xD

That title track is one of the best metal songs ever. It feels more like a classic prog epic than anything else they've done -- shades of Supper's Ready in there.

A Future Uncertain and This Godless Endeavor -- my favorite tracks of the album.
So glad you enjoyed, Jim. There weren't a lot of "metalheads" around me in my teens and most of them for one reason or another could never latch onto this band. At times I have wondered if I'm just crazy for loving this album so much so it's been great to get a little validation from you and from some of the commenters.
As for where to go from here, I personally think this was the peak of the band, but I think all fans at least agree that albums 4-6 (this was 6, out of 7) are great. Album 4 has some of my favorite songs from the band. Album 5 was good, but had major production issues as the band was in a dispute with the label at the time and they weren't afforded much budget. It did get eventually get a reissue that fixed some things, but I think there is a limit to what you can do at that point.

That title track is one of the best metal tracks I've ever heard. The rest of the album doesn't quite resonate with me even though I can appreciate the riffs and technical quality, but the title track? Whoa. Gargantuan and phenomenal.

Yeah lovely Nevermore... They were known and more than respected in Europe for sure, but it seems like the US public wasn't too much aware of them... in the end, they got like a freaking discography ! :)

Nice reaction Jim 😊🤘I think Nevermore is one of the best examples of a band balancing heaviness with melody. If you wanna search them more I would suggest these 2 albums, Dead Heart in a Dead World and Politics of Ecstasy you will like them a lot! Actually I love every album except for their first one I think

    • @GalegHelross
      @GalegHelross 4 місяці тому +2

I think that may have been one reason they were a little niche. Heavy and melodic, a few ballads, smart lyrics, Dane's voice.

Nevermore has been one of my favorite bands for a long time. Nevermore sits on that line of brutal metal that people who don't care for straight false cord vocals in their music have something they can listen to. I do like screaming, but sometimes it's boring. Dane has a set of vocals that are what I like to call cruel vocals, they're unique, they're not cheesy like power metal, but filths it enough to be more digestable. It's tragic how this band has flew under the radar. Almost everyone I introduced them to has bought albums, or became a fan.
Maybe next time you can listen to Dead Heart in a Dead World, or Dreaming Neon Black albums. These are their pinnacle albums, but I love all of them, but these and Godless are my most common playthroughs. If I had to choose one or the other, I couldn't do it. Dreaming Neon Black is bit heavier, Dead Heart is more melodic. All I can say is pick your poison and finish yourself with the other. They're both monster albums.

Beginning to end - WOW Jeff Loomis! In 2008, Warrel Dane did a solo album "Praises To The War Machine" which I bought and enjoyed more than this album. His vox were different and I enjoyed them more. You should give it a listen.

Praises to the War Machine is either my 2nd or 3rd favorite Warrel Dane album, behind This Godless Endeavor. It's got some real feels (Brother hits home hard) and has a bit mellower sound all around. Also really love his cover of Simon and Garfunkel's Patterns a lot more than the Nevermore cover of Sound of Silence.

Isn't this epic track the perfect album closer ? It's also been the last song of their DVD concert in 2006, as you can see in "The Year of the Voyager".
Maybe it's their best studio album, for me it changes once in a while, but I have one small critic : Listening to the whole CD in one session really exausts me, when I listen loud to this kind of music my body "produces" lots of adrenalin, but once it's gone, you feel very tired ... and so you might not be able to
enjoy the whole 57 minutes. Can anybody else confirm this ? 🤘🤣
If you've never seen Nevermore live, you really should check the song Born / Live in Wacken 2006 and This Godless Endeavour of the DVD ... and hopefully a few more songs ... and for a short break in between I recommend the Heart Collector, another all time fan favourit 👍

I think this albums builds to a perfect finish. Personally, I think you have to make it thru the whole thing to fully appreciate the ending. But yeah, I feel put thru the ringer by the time it's over.

      Well Rudi,
The question remains if "Nick" will get into these guys, since he now has all their albums? But I'm still waiting in baited breath for his journey into Fates Warning (Jim too, since he was not thrilled with the 2 tracks he's listened to over, 3 years ago?), since Nick has only done 1 song from "Awaken the Guardian" :p.

@@Pirates_of_the_Underground_I Good morning and good evening, how are you ? are you talking about Nick having all albums of Nevermore ? I think the major problem is, too much music and not enough time ... and being busy with many "strange" marathons ....
So I read somewhere , you have a new job ? I hope it's one you'll enjoy and it's without elevator or lounge music 🤣

@@GalegHelross .... and you are about 29 years younger than I am ... 🤣 I'm wondering, if you felt like "I want to be in first row" watching the Nevermore DVD 😁
I once had a special experience : in 1983 on Rush's Signals Tour I saw them in Frankfurt in a concert hall, more than 10000 people, completely packed and I was in maybe 10th or 12th "row" .... standing ... as it is usual with rock or metal concerts in Germany. The had Nazareth opening and Rush played almost 2 hours. After the concert my shirt and my jeans were soaking wet by all the steam and sweat in the hall ... didn't feel too good, but was a great concert ... my only Rush concert 🤘

@@rudolfbecker4313 Nowadays I deeply regret missing my chance to see a lot of bands that aren't around anymore, but as a teen I wasn't interested in the concert scene. It wasn't until my late 20s when I realized my mistakes.

    That was awesome Jim!
Always great to see people go bonkers for bands I've enjoyed for years, but were not as Massive as they should have been.
But what a way to go for Warrel Dane, while working on his next Solo album in-studio in Brasil. I was pretty shocked at the news, one of the greatest voices in Metal.
There is another band even lesser known, that has kind of taken the baton from Nevermore (and who befriended them) called *Witherfall,* the vocalist is also melodic and has some VERY insane "screaming"/falsetto vocals, and the guitarist is like a neo-classical version of Jeff Loomis. Most of their lyrics are like Ghost/Horror stories (not graphic or gory, just scary stories), and with a "Gothic" tinge. I HIGHLY recommend them.
Also checkout Jeff Loomis and his 2 solo albums, and a project he worked on called "Conquering Dystopia" with another guitar wizard "Keith Merrow" and Bassist Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse, Blotted Science) & Alex Rüdinger (the Faceless) on Drums - all are instrumental albums by the 2 bands.
    And . . .
One day you'll have to checkout more *Fates Warning* from early albums to their later material as I think it will be more to your liking (not nearly as intense as Nevermore but great music). I think there have been bands on your reactions that you may come to appreciate the 2 tracks you've done (I think over 3 years ago?). But you have yet to experience the very unique vocals of the original singer "John Arch" and his creative prose (the album "Awaken the Guardian" 1986), and after decades of retirement, to join FW Founder/Guitarist Jim Matheos in the Prog Metal band *Arch/Matheos* that I really believe will knock your socks off (especially their debut album "Sympathetic Resonance" 2011).
But you have yet to experience vocalist Ray Alder (from the 2 tracks you heard) and his debut on "No Exit" (1988) and the EPIC track "The Ivory Gate of Dreams" . . . that one will be another earthshaker for you :). And then work your way up to their last album, and the track "The Longest Shadows of the Day" where I _insist_ you pay attention to the entire intro . . . I was listening on one of my playlists, and I had forgotten it was a FW track, until I recognized Jim's guitar tone, because the "style" was a bit different for him and it caught me off guard, until the layering and playing got more complex . . . its freakin' A-MA-ZING.
    - Till next time Jim \m/.
