Definitely survival but I'm not sure how much you'd count it as horror (there are certainly horror elements, though), but I quite enjoyed Alexandra Oliva's "The Last One", in which we follow a contestant in a reality show 'survive in the wilderness' competition... only an extremely fatal plague is going on during filming, and she thinks it's all part of the show, put there to challenge her.
the troop had a few absolutely GRUESOME scenes. i think it's my favorite nick cutter so far! and the ruins is still on my TBR 🙏 the terror i'm a bit doubtful about, as i didn't really like the show -- but then again, i do love snowy survival stories like the thing or all the white spaces by ally wilkes. great video rachel!
The Descent starts as a survival horror and very enjoyable. But it’s not just a survival story as it continues. I’m guessing you’ve read this, but if you haven’t , I highly recommend.
@debbiewoten9403 Hello, I don't mean to snub your intrigue but if you don't care for the horror genre because of it's tendency to be too be anywhere from overtly intense, cruel or grotesque, just a word of warning, you may want to avoid the Troop and The Ruins. Those two in particular pull no punches! If you get nightmares from reading horror stories those ywo novels will surely turn you into an insomniac! Stranded is more of a contemporary Twilight Zone story. Much less nightmarish and grotesque but still really well done. If you're curious, of all the books Rachel has mentioned, I'd probably recommend you give that one a try.☺
I love survival horror!I've read most of these. I definitely need to check out Stranded. I think you mentioned in another video that you're not interested in reading The Hunger. It's a survival story (that like The Terror is based on true facts but with a horror twist) that I really enjoyed and I think you would too 🙂
The ruins and The Troop are two of my all-time favorites Two Awesome Survival body horror books I love Nick Cutters other book called little Heaven also awesome intense book about some dimensional Horrors also read an independently published it's called Darkfall Death born by Lee Mountford very gruesome survival horror / fantasy it's kind of Monster Hunters but in the 1800's it's written very well and that author also has quite a few other good books I'm new to your Channel I happened to see survival horror something I really love so I clicked and watched I've read every single one of these all of them a great book and you are 100% right on the terror you have to be able to commit to it it does have some slow Parts but definitely a classic history survival horror
@@TheShadesofOrange you need to read little Heaven you're missing out he also has another claustrophobic horror book called The Deep which is also good great video by the way
YES, The Troop was everything you said it was. I read that last September and it was great! It's been a few years now, since I read The Terror. But that one sticks with me. Helped solidify my Dan Simmons fandom. Suicide Forest, believe it or not, was one of the first books I got for my Kindle, probably 8 or 9 years ago. I never got around to reading it, but now that you've brought under light, I hope to read it soon!
Thanks for the recs. I love survival horror and thrillers. I recently finished FantasticLand which I loved! Jeremy Bates is an author I haven't heard of before. My Libby app doesn't have Suicide Forest but his other books look good too, especially Catacombs.
The Suicide Forest is on sale for ebook right now so I snagged a copy 😃 I don't have much interest in The Ruins, especially because it got spoiled for me, but everyone seems to love it so maybe I need to try it out sometime. The Troop scares me! It sounds fantastic but I am afraid that the gross out scenes might be too much for me.
I really liked The Troop too. You may like The Island by Adrian McKinty. It's about a family on vacation who get stuck in the Australian outback. The characters make a lot of bad choices but the story was ok.
I've got The Terror sitting on a shelf next to Drood, both by Dan Simmons. I haven't read a Simmons book yet. The Terror kind of gave me John Carpenter's "The Thing," vibes. Which is great! I've also wanted to read The Troop and The Ruins. I just read a couple of articles about the Suicide Forest about a month ago when I was researching famously haunted places. It's cool that it's got a novelization.
I love The Terror. It's got just about everything. The Troop is pretty good. I actually don't like The Ruins all that much. Don't hate it either. Middling, I guess. 🤔 Might check out that one set in Alaska.
I have The Terror, and Stranded on my kobo. I read Suicide Forest in Dec I think. Liked it. I think I read The Ruins but maybe I’m thinking The Relic? Wasn’t my favourite because I disliked the characters so much I wasn’t emotionally moved when they began getting killed off. Off topic a bit (still survival though); after I saw your poll I was scrolling through my kobo and found one of the poll books already on it. Adrift. I finished it last night. Stranded on a space ship and food running out. The author did a good job of bringing life to his characters. Almost five star read. There was a trope I saw coming 200 pages earlier but kept hoping it wouldn’t happen or if it did then have it fresh in some way. It happened, and with a predictable consequence too. But some people may like it. If you haven’t read it yet, I think you’ll like it. I’m going to see what else the author has written.
I’ve read The Ruins and Suicide forest. I found The Ruins fairly simple in the story but yet so effective and as you said- a PAGE TURNER!! I read it pretty fast for me. I wasn’t so impressed to Suicide Forest. I like the build up but disappointed with the “cause.” Great video!! Thank you for putting forth good content! :-)
Thank you for this vid! I love survival stories, so i added the ruins to my TBR. The "stranded" title is quite popular, hahaha. I loved Stranded by Sarah Goodwin. You probably already read it, but that's the ultimate survival book for me. Who can resist Lord of the Flies for adults :)
Hi, Rachel! I would recommend The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King for your next survival horror pick. It's one of King's shorter novels so it might be right up your wheelhouse. :)
glad you liked the ruins though I liked smith's first even more has he written a third novel? afraid I didn't like the troop nearly as much as you and others have maybe it was the gastronomic aspects of it though concept was very plausible with all the diet craziness have heard of japan suicide forest but must be careful reading it if I do due to subject matter
The Terror is an excellent book. Based on a true story (minus the thing that hunts them) which made it scarier. The Troop was good too, but I did not like the animal cruelty scenes. I have to check out The Ruins next!
If you don't mind recommendations from authors, I think you would enjoy The Nightcrawler by P A Sheppard. It was published by Aphotic Realm a few years ago, but it is full on survival horror. I have other books, but I genuinely think you would enjoy that one the most. If you're interested, just let me know and I'll ask the publisher to send you a copy :)
A lot of great book recommendations! Thank you for the content warning for the harming of animals. I’m all for people getting chopped up but let the animals live, lol ! Have you read My Heart Is a Chainsaw? It looks good!
Girlfriend, you died in a past life from starvation. Have you explored that? Thanks for the animal cruelty warning. Won’t read any book with that in it.
Survival horror is sub-genre in computer games, where your character is always in danger with little resources & ammo. This is wrong !! I'm sorry but I've never heard of survival horror in literature... Ok..I listened to what you mean & ok....we may consider this survival horror in lit...fine !

Yeah I didn't watch the Terror show I can't compare
Thank you Rachel, I love these types of books.😊
I’ll definitely look into Stranded. Thank you for mentioning Ronald Malfi, I want to start reading his books this year!
Love Malfi!
You're easily my go to tuber when it comes to horror and its cognate genre.
I am once again reminded that I need to read Stranded. Thank you for this video, Rachel!
You're so welcome!

I'm not into horror books (gives me nightmares) but you make these sound intriguing.
Thanks for watching anyways

It's nonfiction, but I love the book Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer
Also The Road, by Cormac McCarthy (this one's fiction)
