Kamilla Cardoso scored 23 points and No. 1 South Carolina followed up its big win over defending national champion LSU with its 16th straight victory over Vanderbilt, 91-74, Sunday.
The Gamecocks (19-0, 7-0 Southeastern Conference) started slowly in their first game since winning at No. 9 LSU 76-70 on Thursday night. But Cardoso and her teammates soon took control to win their 51st straight at home.
South Carolina looked like it still had LSU triumph on its mind at first. The players danced and shimmied during pregame warmups and coach Dawn Staley came out in black hoodie with “Boo,” on it - a clapback to her joke about her treatment by LSU fans.
And Vanderbilt (17-4, 4-3), which came in on its best 20-game start in 17 years, stuck with the powerhouse Gamecocks early on. The Commodores were up 21-20 on Sacha Washington’s foul shot with 8:56 left in the half.
That’s when South Carolina took on a 22-9 run the rest of the period to take control. Tessa Johnson, Te-Hina Paopao and Bree Hall all hit threes and Ashlyn Watkins had a three-point play during the stretch.
Cardoso, the 6-foot-7 senior who leads the SEC in field goal percentage (.600), made nine of 14 shots and finished two points shy of her career-best set during her freshman year at Syracuse.
Hall and Watkins added 11 points each for the Gamecocks. Watkins also had a game-high eight boards and three of the Gamecocks seven blocks.
Washington and Aga Makurat led Vanderbilt 18 points apiece.
    Notables:
With the 91-74 win, the Gamecocks have tallied 23 consecutive wins at home by double digits.
South Carolina continued to prove its depth, with all nine Gamecocks who stepped onto the floor scoring at least a bucket, and five finishing in double figures.
The Gamecocks packed the paint against the Commodores, outscoring Vanderbilt 48-28.
South Carolina shot at least 50.0 percent in all but the first quarter.
Kamilla Cardoso finished with a new SEC career high of 23 points, scoring eight of the Gamecocks’ first 12 points in the game then dropped 13 in the third period in just nine minutes on the court.
Bree Hall notched her 10th game this season finishing in double-figures, putting up 11 with seven coming in the first half.
Ashlyn Watkins ended with 11 points and a team-high three blocks, two of which came back-to-back in the final seconds of the game to keep the Commodores from scoring the final bucket.
Raven Johnson had a strong third quarter, putting up six of her 10 points on a pair of 3s as part of a 17-5 run by the Gamecocks to put themselves on top by 20, in addition to dishing out a team-high seven assists.

SC win this year it will be because of the redemption of Rayven Johnson. The way she has performed this year after hiding last is so refreshing. She really did take it personal, with herself, Iowa didn't disrespect her, they just didnt respect her. She been on a mission and its been great t0 watch, thats that Jotdan mentality. SC is a great team, i don't think theu should force the ball to Cardoso but they have so much depth that its gonna be hard for teams to match up with. We've seen Cardoso against someone on her level and she disappeared so hopefully that wont be the game plan moving forward. Shes not AW, shes not gonna give talent any work.

I agree with what you've said about RJ, she is having a terrific year and is definitely on a mission. However, I would disagree with what you said about cardosa. They will (and should) play through her because 90% of college basketball can't matchup with her. If you're saying she disappeared against LSU, then so did Angel Reese because their stats are basically similar.
You think Kim mulkey didn't come up with a strategy for cardosa? I think y'all just expect her to be more dominant than what she is. Cardosa is a suppose to be a high scorer or offensive paint beast like Aaliyah Boston. She's more size, presence, rebounding, and shot blocking.

@@ks_wallace2324 ppl be talking but they don't watch the games or don't know what they are looking at. I been defending Carduso and Paige Bueckers since they both played. Mf see somebody didn't score what they expect to score and that disappeared or didn't show up. The game announcers/callers put stuff in folk head too. Who would have blamed Reese 5th foul on HVL if the announcer didn't say " that's the second time Reese got a foul off a bad HVL pass? Nobody! Morrow run a isolation on Watkins and get a good step on here for her only score against Watkins. The next play Williams run a give and go with Morrow, Williams finish at the rim. Lobo(former Uconn Husky, calling the game) says same play knowing its not. I get on the internet a dude says Morrow mad Ashlyn looked bad running the same play over and over.

@KelzKelz I'm not ppl. I said forcing the ball to Cardoso is where they mess up. If she's getting position and can just turn and put it then you're playing to her strengths. Once they're asking her to make offensive moves (more than 2 dribbles) then it puts the offense I'm jeopardy. You don't ask Rudy gobert to be KAT. Forcing it to her just because she's tall or because that was the game plan is lazy coaching imo. Angel Reese was held in check because the refs knew they couldn't allow her to be out of control and draw cheap fouls. They didn't put her on the line. Angel would be in foul trouble a lot more often and she def wouldn't get 100 free throws a game if refs could control their whistle. Idc what Lobo said, HVL didn't cause Reese to foul out or be in foul trouble. I think HVL shouldn't be playing PG, she's a shooter, Flau'Jae should be running the point, she's more passive and has a deceptive quickness along with height and vision. I don't love basketball players or teams, I love basketball, 1st and foremost.

      She's inconsistent.
In the LSU game, she was near-MVP level: driving hard and scoring, crossing people up and actually scoring, even hitting a 3-pointer.
In this game, she struggled. Might be fatigue from LSU. Might just be an off day.
      Who knows? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
