I am new to this channel and this was the first video from it I watched. Why is everyone saying this is a joke for Aprils Fools? I found this video to be a perfect Monopoly explanation. Really loved it!
First off, welcome! Glad to have you here, and sorry if some of the comments are a bit confusing. Second of all, this is a legitimate tutorial video for Monopoly, and that's what it's meant to be. Thanks for the kind words about it. The main reason for many of the comments is that I typically cover board games that you are more likely to find in a hobby store dedicated to board games. Monopoly and other games (like Risk, Trouble and Candy Land) are usually seen as mass market games sold in mass market stores. However, the hobby of board games has grown a lot over the past decade, with the variety and depth of theme and styles of play evolving at an amazing speed. Over 3,000 DIFFERENT board games release a year now, and it's these other types of non mass-market games that I typically cover. I hope you check a few out, you might really enjoy them. Could I suggest Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride to start? Or if you like the idea of a co-operative game (where players work together), perhaps Pandemic? These games are also getting more popular, so you might find them in your mass-market stores too! People who play some of these newer games I'm mentioning, may end up looking down on mass market games. It's not entirely with mean-spirited intentions at heart. There are some common criticisms of mass market games. Games like Monopoly rely a lot on luck, taking the choices away from the player. You roll the dice and you move where the dice take you. Modern games tend to give the players more choice - instead of rolling the dice, you decide where you want to go. Older games, like Monopoly, tended to have things like "player elimination" where a player could be kicked out of the game before it's over. Modern games frown on that. We don't like to have experiences where some people get to keep playing and having fun, while others are sitting on the sidelines. That said, just because some people may not like older games as much any more, that doesn't mean they don't have value. Lots of people still enjoy these games today... and they should. "Fun" is not something that someone else gets to tell another person how to have. If you play Monopoly and enjoy it, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately, like any members of a niche hobby - sometimes the biggest supporters of it can get a "little snooty" about the games they left behind in pursuit of newer options. In part, that's why I released this on April 1st. I wanted to create a proper tutorial for Monopoly, a game that is quite frequently played wrong, but I also needed to give some of my core audience an excuse not to fill the comments with "this game is trash, why would you ever cover it?". For that portion of my audience, they now have an excuse: "ah, it's an April Fools joke!" - for everyone else, and for folks like you, you hopefully get to enjoy a well presented tutorial about a classic game that introduced many of us to the hobby we now enjoy. I hoped to have a little fun with my core audience who wouldn't expect a video like this (for reasons I appreciate), but I also wanted to do a legit tutorial for a classic game. The other hope I have, is that people who aren't aware of the wonderfully diverse world of board gaming today, may discover it, by finding this video here and then checking out some of the other ones on this channel. I hope you have a look around - happy gaming!
@@WatchItPlayed Wow! Thank you very much for this allanswering answer! I will check out your other videos as I don't really like Monopoly for the reasons you mentioned above. I recently played a lot of new games one of which was Small World (lemme check if you feature it in your videos...yes you do :) ). I have never enjoyed a game on the first evening of playing as much as Small World. I am looking forward to watching your video on the game. Keep up the good work.
Yeah, as Rodney said the "joke" is that it's an unexpected game on this channel and many of us expected a bait and switch with something else in the video, but Rodney one upped us by doing one of his regular rules videos like he does for all other games. So it's not really a joke, just unexpected.
Now we see why no one plays Monopoly correctly: It takes Rodney Smith, the greatest board game explainer, nearly 18 minutes to go over the rules. Most non-gamer attention spans last about 2 minutes before their eyes glaze over & they say: “Let’s just PLAY!” LOL!
@@thankukorea, and why the game goes on for hours and hours. If played by the rules most games by an average player will be lucky to last 30 minutes before there is a declared winner.
In theory yes, but U very VERY seldom U get to this kind of dominant situation - and if U do, U can just as well build the hotels, because U are winning anyway.
I can't believe one can explain the board games with this kind of diligence, seriousness and clarity. I really appreciate the work you do here. Its crystal clear to me now :))
It's actually a brilliant move by Rodney how to reach the masses and teach a classic game. Which may gain viewers and more attention, and also be an April Fool's Joke for us into the hobby.
I never saw anyone in this entire world to give such a thorough explanation of Monoplane game rules. Such a patience you have man, I appreciate your work and bless. 🍀🙏

played Monopoly with my sister and found out we were actually doing some of the actions wrong: like not moving our pieces whenever we rolled double😅 we just kept on rolling until it wasn’t doubled; and also buying houses whenever we feel like it even tho we don’t have the color set yet. Thanks so much for this video! We can Monopoly properly now😂
It works as an April Fool's joke, and I'm sure it's intended that way. The clever bit is it's also a thorough explanation of the rules of how to play Monopoly with the proper rules. It avoids the negative reaction people would have to him doing a video on Monopoly any other day, works as a joke, and it serves as a real rules explanation. Bravo to him for pulling that off!
@@Sheriff_K honestly outside of official board game tournaments I have never met anybody in my entire 40 years of living new how to play Monopoly the right way. It's annoying that we are all taught to play it the wrong way which is why we all hate it. It actually is a pretty decent auction game if you play it the right way
NOTE: This is a question that has come up a few times, so I just want to ensure it's especially clear: as stated in the video, a player CANNOT build houses on a property unless they own ALL of the properties of that color set. This means that if you own one red property and another player owns the other two, neither of you can build on red properties. You will have to wait until that player goes bankrupt and hopefully acquire their properties, OR you can trade with them (explained in the video).
Hi Rodney, thanks for your great content as always. One question I have that I don't think the video covered: can I mortgage a property if I still have 1 house on another property of the same set? I actually learned something, that I will never use, but learned all the same. I didn’t know or forgot that a player that received a mortgaged property pay the total right away or the 10%. Thanks Rodney !
Agree. Her patented 'Landlord's Game' seems to be a clear precursor to Monopoly, and Parker's Bros must have thought the same or they wouldn't have paid her for her patent in 1934. Darrow definitely made some changes and refined the game, but it's hard to know to what extent, since he was taught some version of the game by players in the early 1930s, and no record of that version survives. So a joint credit for the game is the fairest solution.
@@kascally Darrow was not a game designer. He simply made his own sets and sold them. He did not change or influence any of the game’s design aspects aside from the colors used (which were just the cheapest colors of paint he could find) and the artwork.

I hope so too Tom. If people enjoy Monopoly, that's perfectly fine, but maybe this video will help them discover some other gems they didn't know existed.
While it is far from my first choice, I actually like Monopoly in 2-player mode. Plays reasonably quickly and - played correctly - has some interesting decisions in the beginning with the auctioning process, since there isn't enough cash in the game to buy up everything.
This was really helpful. I had an assignment about this in game design and had no idea how to even play. Thanks for this! Your explanation was really clear
Perfect time for some humor but this has got to be one of the the best rules videos yet. I still have no desire to play Monopoly but if I do, this is the place to go.
I came, I saw, I laughed. My how to play would have been. “Throw this in the garbage and get out a good game and play it. ‘“. Only Rodney could make this video engaging. 👍
Thanks Rodney! I didn't know I needed to return the remaining player tokens to the box. Usually I just keep them lying on the table where the cats or toddlers get to them, causing much frustration and discord. Cheers!
after playing with my kids monopoly for the 1st time, i had 2 questions that were not answered in any of the video's i watched, and then i remembered your channel and i thought - this nice and thorough guy for sure have mentioned it, and of course you did! your videos are the best!!!
@@Urtho Part of the hate of Monopoly is that people have grown up playing it wrong so it drags on for hours. The 2 biggest culprits are - 1 - ignoring the fact that you can buy property you dont land on through bidding 2 - putting money menat for the bank in the middle and giving that to people who land on free parking
Oh boy, can't wait until we see the other 4736283 versions of monopoly in the channel! Also, does canadian money holds the same value as monopoloy money?
@@WatchItPlayed So that means, selling property(open or mortgaged) to other players is better than to give it to the bank. Unless we want to keep the property.
@@TheDataArchitect If you can get a better price... it's maybe better. Of course, now your opponent has another property you might land on and have to pay rent to them for. Man, I could not thank you enough! Im currently replicating monopoly fully in Minecraft and its really hard to get the rules and everything since the computer follows a stright dialouge of instructions that basicly consist and build on top of these rules so I have to specify every single detail and it can be frustrating hard to get your head around, how this may all works and when to display what. This is super. Thought I’d bone up on the rules before Christmas Day when relatives try to bring their own ‘rules’ (money under Free Parking for instance 🙄) to the party. Also thanks for clarifying the way mortgages and selling houses back to the bank work. Top job 🙌

Thank-you very much!!!
A real pleasure to be able to assist - I hope you get to have lots of fun gaming sessions together :)
This is brilliant work. I normally despise April Fool's Day, but Rodney did it exactly right. Thanks so much for this.
1:26 THERE'S A DINOSAUR TOKEN IN THIS GAME!!!?
I'm so gonna buy this game.
Yeah, really! I used to always pick the dog, but not anymore.
I know right?
Ross, is that you?
I like your pfp
Does anyone know where to find this game? I went down to my local games store and they've never heard of it.
Maybe it's out of print?
Mike Price walmart
the old one is from 1930 i think, so try fleemarkets. but it reprinted in ALOT of other themes :) now in the end it uses credidcards LOL
Bought mines from Amazon
I just got one from target yesterday
@@brad2718 boo
My OCD really appreciated the manner in which you laid out the houses, with all being oriented in the same direction.
After 21 years since owning a Monopoly board game, I have found a very instructional video on how to play the game.
I hope this was helpful!
@@WatchItPlayed It was. Thank you!
FINALLY! I wanted to learn how to play this underappreciated gem for years.
Looks amazing! Any idea if a reprint is coming to Kickstarter???????
I don't know, it's a pretty small indie company..
I hope it has expansions, solo-mode, and a deluxe version! I'm going all-in!
My friends: *Watches 2 mins* Aight, lets play
me: *Watches the whole vid* Big brain time
My friends: *Lose instantly*
Me: *Like a boss*
Way to go :)
This is the best monopoly tutorial out there
I really learnt alot from it
So glad it was helpful!
I hope this will be a "gateway video", that make people watch Rodneys other videos and find this awesome hobby.
Best line:
'Suitable replacement' --> Proceeds to take out more monopoly money from wallet
That was actual Canadian money. We have plastic money that's a lot different than most other countries
Jackson Reynolds I know, I’m Canadian :) Our money is known to look a lot like Monopoly money, hence the joke.
I like how Monopoly wasn't allowed on your shelves, so the box flipping intro had to be altered.
I love monopoly been playing it since I was a kid now I pass it on to my child and still playing it with him
I hope you have a great time playing together!
This was really helpful. I had an assignment about this in game design and had no idea how to even play. Thanks for this! Your explanation was really clear
All the best with your assignment!
Cheers!
I'm here for those levels of details!
Came for the joke, but stayed to once-and-for-all learn these actual rule's I've been hearing so much about.
after playing with my kids monopoly for the 1st time, i had 2 questions that were not answered in any of the video's i watched, and then i remembered your channel and i thought - this nice and thorough guy for sure have mentioned it, and of course you did!
your videos are the best!!!
Ah, thanks so much Sharon!
I don’t know how you did it, but I kind of want to play monopoly now.
Probably because Rodney is great at making games look good.
4:01 "suitable replacement" LOL
Oh boy, can't wait until we see the other 4736283 versions of monopoly in the channel! Also, does canadian money holds the same value as monopoloy money?
Yes.
The best video i have seen so far on the topic.
Started this game like 3 days ago, and am in love of it.
So glad you're having fun playing - thanks for the kind words on the video!
@@WatchItPlayed On what amount the mortage property can be sold to other players?
@@TheDataArchitect Whatever amount they agree to. Get as much as they're willing to pay :)
Figuring out what's "best" in a game, usually happens at the table, based on the situation. It can be hard to say that one option or another is always best or better.
This helped a ton!!! Thanks man!! Got so many notes now 😂
So nice to know this was helpful with your current build project - sounds awesome!
Great content. Actually solved questions I stumbled upon while playing. Appreciate the video!
Glad it helped Brian!
Mee to
This is obviously the Canadian version of Monopoly. Any chance we can get a video detailing how to convert the instructions from metric?
Just multiple everything by 2.2 and your conversions are complete...
Dude, I just love how this guy explains games ❤️
Thank you!
best explanation.i was looking for a tutorial for monopoly.this is best
Thank you - glad you enjoyed!
I've been accused of making rules up. This video proves that actually I have just read the rules properly, thank you!
Excellent!
What the hell? Ah, April 1st :D either that or Rodney's got cabin fever and this is the only game left in his collection he hasn't done a video for :)
That spin at the beginning though
When does Kickstarter begins? Hype!!!
i have ben playing monopoly wrong for my whole life but after watching this video i was shocked about how every single rule i messed up lol i gotta subscribe
Glad it's helping!
Great video. It brought back many childhood memories. We played Monopoly with about 75% of the rules you covered.
Glad you enjoyed :)
Hahaha Rodney’s trolling us! 😂😂
I like how Canadian sets have American properties, but are bi-lingual with French.
Do Candyland next year.
but I just noticed the word color is using American English
I'm quite certain that I never played the rules to this correctly... ever. Thanks Rodney (not sure I'll be playing it any time again soon, but you never know... 2020 COVID quarantine and all...)
54 days.. I'm still laughing at such a clear how-to-play video. The clearer it is.. the funnier it gets. looking forward to his snakes&ladders version.
Cool that you are doing one of the classics, this might get some more people into newer games when they find your channel. Great job
Omg, Rodney, I LOOOVE IT! Thank you for this, I very much needed this today!
The joke is that we all get to find out how wrong we were when we played it as kids...
When is it coming to Kickstarter? I don't see a link in the info.
This is super. Thought I’d bone up on the rules before Christmas Day when relatives try to bring their own ‘rules’ (money under Free Parking for instance 🙄) to the party. Also thanks for clarifying the way mortgages and selling houses back to the bank work. Top job 🙌
Very kind of you to say - have fun playing on Christmas :)
Amazing video! Monopoly was one of my first "gateway" board games, so glad to see it get its proper treatment here!
While I think I've grown past the original game, I still enjoy many of its variants (Jackpot, Cheater's Edition, Pac-Man etc).
This was one of my earliest gaming experiences too!
Set Collection, Miniatures, Auction Mechanics, why is this not #1 on BGG?
I started to "thumbs up" this post and then realized someone might actually take me seriously. So I'll just say, "Your comment brought me a smile and a laugh. Thank you."
@@annereynolds7930 I am expecting so much shade for saying it, but it is April 1st, so harmless fun.
Thank you so much for this video and others. I always appreciate how detailed they are and how clearly the rules are covered. My friends and I owe you a great many number of hours playing together.
So very nice of you to say Jonathan - thanks for the kind words!
SAVAGE MOVE my friend 😂
I have started playing monopoly yesterday, it was boring since no one really understood or followed the rules.
I can't wait to teach them :)
I hope this helps!
most informative. so much more than the official rulebook. goodman
Very glad you liked it!
I didn't even know monopoly had anything other than house rules.
QUESTION: Did those house/hotel containers come with the game??? 😉😁
When I saw this video posted, I thought it would be a quick video announcing April Fools. But it is an actual tutorial! lol. Now I am not sure what to think
April fools. The fake video you expected was actually a real tutorial!
@@iandakariann You are right! Well played Rodney, well played.
YES! Been waiting for this for years, now I can finally play monopoly right
I knew you had a great need :)
This is the best April 1st video I've seen. Great work. I actually watched it all the way through.
