Her fans are so toxic, as usual, they mobbed him and demanded an apology that he gave for just stating facts, her Spanish is terrible, her delivery and acting of that Spanish is terrible, if you’re a Spanish speaker you know it form the get go, the worst is that the script didn’t help her because nobody uses the words that she said, you kind of understand it but it’s clearly the job of a screenwriter and director ignorant of Mexico, its language and even when not a fan of Eugenio he’s not lying at all, stating facts that are so difficult for her fans to grasp and for her to play the victim and talking about heart and work when after years and years of using her Latina heritage for her benefit but not learning the minimum Spanish only shows that there’s no work in this but just looking for cheap benefits with the minimum work

Selena knows her spanish isn't any good. So I feel she should have pushed herself to learn more as all performers push themselves when taking a role. Or she should have not taken the role because I really didn't understand what she said and another bilingual actress could have gotten that role.
As a Spanish speaking person, her Spanish was horrendous. This part was important, latina pivotal roles are limited, the story could have been better actress who spoke Spanish fluently.

I believe she’s second generation. So it tends to be more common that they don’t speak the language. Now days Many first generation don’t speak Spanish either. It really depends on the parents. Many dreamers don’t speak Spanish either which is sad in my opinion.
Her spanish is horrible. As a Latino, this feels very disrespectful that she didn't learn the language and actually took it seriously. If she was serious, then she should not have taken the role.
As a spanish speaker I did not like her performance in this film. For me the broken, choppy spanish hindered from her performance. I couldnt see the other aspects of her performance because the dialect did not fit the country that she was representing. And the heart of this movie is in not just the story but the full authenticity of the vocal range of the cast. If you told me the character was from California but family from Mexico I could maybe buy the broken spanish. But she is supposed to he a native speaker. I think she is a wonderful performer and deserving of her opportunities to shine, i just dont believe this was it.
Reminds me of how her name sake Selena Quintanilla would fake Spanish and people adored her anyways. She still was very good even if the Spanish wasn’t perfect.
Bad casting. Her spanish is awful. I’m a spanish speaker and couldn’t understand her. An Eugenio is not a great actor but he said what we were all thinking. The job was to make the character believable, she didn’t deliver
It’s not about accents, Salma’s English is near perfect. Thick and heavy accent but she speaks properly. Selena’s Spanish was not proper. You could tell she did not feel comfortable speaking it
I speak spanish and I think is important to value her effort, because is the same when latinos keep trying to speak english at the movies, so just support each other and be polite and kind with the effort and love every actor performance.
She’s trying no one’s saying that but it wasn’t very good that the truth she talented in many ways but she can’t speak Spanish and is stealing awards form better actresses because of her name that’s what people are upset over
@@juliomonasterio6230 She's getting nominated cause people do think she gave a good performance, which I'm gladly one of them. If you did not like her performance, then fine your entitled to your opinion and i respect it but to say that she's stealing her awards from others is dumb and unfounded.
Sad and dangerous that he has to apologize for stating a fact. Canceling someone just for having an opinion is dangerous. Besides, he is right. Her accent and acting were not good, no matter how hard she worked, the truth is she needs to work a lot more. The only part that I agree he went a little too far is the "high five me" moment.
Was he upset that his daughter didn’t didn’t get the job. He has to look at his thick English accent and be grateful people accepted him here to make movies. He also is living here. BOO to him
This is not about her Spanish. The criticism goes to the industry. There are many other actors that can speak Spanish and represent better a supposed genuine Hispanic character. Give her another role. And bring a Spanish speaker actress instead. Latinos are way underrepresented in the industry anyway. That is what is wrong here.
Eugenio Derbez is absolutely right about the Spanish, yet he’s also right that his words were careless. We as humans can be right and wrong at the same time. Native Spanish speakers also have an accent when they speak English and would also potentially be criticized if that accent was heard while playing the role of perhaps a British or Irish person as an example.
At 2:53, that's exactly Eugenios' point. You don't know, and nonspanish speakers are going to say she was great. But for a role like that, perhaps give others the opportunity, someone who is capable of actually putting their all into it. Idk, she could have turned down this role if she knew she wasn't right for it, js.
But her Spanish was way worse than his English, she doesn’t know words and She doesn't know how to accentuate her voice so what she said makes sense. It’s like listening to google translator.
Eugenio no captó que el personaje de Selena habla inglés y español, así que da a entender que el español puede ser de alguien que no sea 100% fluido. Bravo Selena your acting was great!
Well, maybe the same comment can be said about his English. It’s my understanding that she’s supposed to play a character that is NOT fluent in Spanish although she is a Latina. If that’s the case she nailed the role. Parabéns Selena🎉
I don’t get it … what about Sofia Vergara and Selma Hayek they overdo their accents (on purpose) when speaking English, why don’t they get the same criticism?
Exactly! Plus Selena was playing a character that was Mexican American and the accent made sense! Many 2nd, 3rd generation Hispanics don’t speak Spanish at all. It’s sad but when you live your love in a primarily English world you loose your language along the way.
Two songs from the film, "El Mal" (Zoe Saldana) and "Mi Camino" (Selena Gomez) have been nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Original Song - Motion Picture
100% agree with Eugenio. Listening to her spanish is like watching a NY mafia movie and the main character has a thick Texas accent. It completely takes you out. I dont doubt her acting abilities, but this was just the wrong casting choice. If she had put this project in the backburner while she got a dialect coach, she could have nailed it, but that's not what happened. The only reason Eugenio was quick to apologize is because he is coming off of a previous cancellation attempt where they took his words out of context, so he is probably afraid this will pile onto that.
He's apologized cause he came across as an hypocrite and ass hole. He went way beyond criticism about her work, he attacked her fans and the critics who enjoyed her performance in the film. Not to mention the glaring fact that he was at the premiere of that same film and posted on his social media that he liked the film and the performances. He also has a picture with him and the entire cast of the film. He brought this on himself and he knows that, that's why he was quick to apologize.
It's how he addressed it that was wrong. I'm not sure why people are defending him. There's nothing wrong with him criticising her performance if you do it in the right way. This was just really rude and disrespectful.
@@shadysorkin9214 The reason why some people are defending him is because they have a personal problem with Selina. A good deal of them I bet did not even see the film she was in.
@@shadysorkin9214 A lot of it boils down to racism, sexism and down right stupidity. Same stuff from the same knuckleheads you find on the internet. Always taking offense over anything she does and always trying to twist her words to fit their sad opinions of her
I don't like Eugenio at all, but he's not wrong there, as a native Mexican, I can tell that Selena doesn't speak Spanish at all, it seems that she memorised everything without knowing what she was saying, and honestly, I think that there are many, many excellent Mexican actors who could have done that character way better. She sounds awful!
Her Spanish does suck! I speak Spanish and just think people are so scared to speak out against her for whatever reason. She could be hard working and still not the best languages are hard to get right, but I don’t think Eugenio’s comments were out of pocket.
It’s ok to say her Spanish isn’t great, but he did worse by making fun of her with that stupid lady on that podcast. she took the high road. Good for you Selena.
Well she is not a spanish speaker for starters. Her family is latinos but probably didn't need to/ or want to teach her Spanish. It happens in a lot of cases. So i believe that her Spanish was good for not speaking it. Then Eugenio Dervez is a good comedian but doesn't speaking English well as well and no English speaker ever came out and said those things to him( at least i haven't seen anyone saying it). He might be but hurting cause his movies are always criticized as bad even in Mexico. So that might be why he saw an opportunity to make someone feel bad. And that apology was just cause of all that people are saying about him probably just cause he was under pressure. Please don't get me wrong he is a great comedian. But he is not that grant lord that everyone tries to make him i think but still he should have focused on her acting not pronunciation. That's not why she gets her awards. In my opinion awards are for their acting not only for the pronunciation. Well i hope no one gets offended. This is just an opinion.
“ I did my best”, girl you’re a professional actress, if she couldn’t do the part, then she shouldn’t have been given the part. Her Spanish was horrible, maybe someone else should have been given that role.
Eugenio Derbez forgot one thing: Not All Skin-Folk Are Kin-Folk. Communities should be able to support their members, but there's a difference between destructive and constructive criticism and actors in Hollywood should have dense-enough skin to endure both aspects. Selena Gomez's acting was on the same level of cheesiness as the performances exhibited within "La Rosa De Guadalupe," never mind the fact that she didn't linguistically prepare herself for the role.
I'm looking at the clip and honestly I think people are being overly critical. So her Spanish wasn't perfect but you can understand what she is saying. He is allowed his opinion but he very overly harsh and seem to enjoy putting her down with this interviewer.
As a both English and Spanish speaker, I agree with Dude no Derbez' opinion. Selena's Spanish was horrible and it did in fact impact her performance. In order to feel what you are trying to interpret, it felt she was trying to hard to pronounce the words that she lost focus on her acting.
The criticism is because with all that she gets paid she could have put the work into getting the language down. It's the same for when she sings off key or not being able to project her voice or belt, all of which requires a lot of practice. She's been marketed so much to where they have everyone believing she is amazing at all she does, the same with Taylor Swift. These women are billionaires for the "talent".
It's not that it's bad it's just cringe. Almost like the cast from, on my block speaking Spanish. There's no hate . I think she's like 2nd gen american so that'll explain it
How disappointing! I’m a native Spanish speaker and I will need subtitles when Selena is speaking in Spanish. I can’t understand anything that she is saying! It’s beyond sad that so many talented actresses don’t get the opportunities; she’s given the role without having to audition and does a horrible job. Her fans are beyond pathetic and sensitive! They need to grow the F up! Shame on the Golden Globes for nominating her! There were so many other amazing supportive actresses!
He shouldn't have apologized. Her Spanish is unintelligible. And it affects her acting. A narco-musical? how nice! The premise is just ridiculous. I'm not planning to watch this piece of trash.
Whoa, I didn’t know her Spanish was this bad. It’s disappointing that they choose someone who can’t speak Spanish fluently when there are so many amazing Latina actresses that would have done an amazing job. I like Selena a lot, but man they really didn’t pick the right actress for this role.

His English accent isn’t that great, it’s about the acting. I think other actors would have done better playing his part in movies he acted in here in the States and there was no criticism. Be kind
Everyone criticizes and makes fun of Sofia Vergara's accent when she speaks English, and her accent doesn't come close to how horrible Selena spoke Spanish in that movie. Eugenio didn't have to apologize at all. The truth will set you free 🥂
She could have gotten some help with her pronunciation. In the end it's more the Director's responsibility for allowing this to happen, unless that was the aim.
I feel like she’s being blamed for something that isn’t completely her fault, who was the line coach? Who wrote these lines and had her practice them? Because it’s clear that THAT person does not speak Spanish well enough to correct her lines so that she wouldn’t be humiliated by that script.
(Envidia o coraje)?
They were right about saying that people were scare about criticizing Selena Gomez performance, the fans were going to go with everything against you, he felt it first hand, that is why he apologized, no one is above criticism, her performance was terrible.
Bro he is not lying though some roles should go to a Spanish speaking actresses, so many out here. I don’t know why he apologized when that’s what us fluent Spanish speakers are also saying and thinking.
I think in general, shouldn't this movie receive a lot more criticism for its casting of non-Mexicans, for its usage of non-Mexican places, for not a single Mexican person involved in the production? And for that brownface of the Spanish main actress? And for making a movie in a language barely anyone in the whole production team even speaks? Like I am from Europe and I could tell you a bunch of actors and actresses from Mexico who could have done a better job? Jesus Christ, Karol Sevilla could have slayed this role that Selena Gomez had, just to throw in another name of a Disney actress who is actually Mexican. And maybe shoot a movie about Mexico in Mexico and not in France? And on top of that, involve some people who can actually speak that goddamn language when you make that movie in said language. And gain some knowledge about the country first before you use all the stereotypes you can think of. Like wow, everything about this movie's production is shit and the laziness of all the people involved should NOT be rewarded.
Bro her Spanish and acting in this particular movie was laughable. I said what I said. Mediocrity is not cute. Eugenio should have stuck with what he said.
Si, no se le entiende el Español a Selena Gomez. Eugenio tiene toda la razón al criticarla constructiva mente. Yes, we can't understand what Selena Gomez is speaking in Spanish. Eugenio is 100% correct with his constructive criticism.
Well her Spanish sucks and he shouldn't have Apologized because he didn't say anything rude. He just spoke the truth . And everyone that thinks otherwise is just ridiculous and being a hypocrite
To say her Spanish was "weak" is such an understatement. I'm a native speaker and can't understand more than half of what she was supposed to be saying. The fact that she's winning awards for it is very telling of how fake these awards are. She doesn't deserve to be nominated, let alone actually win anything.

She’s a billionaire, she can take Spanish lessons for gods sake. She’s over here taking roles from Latin actors who speak the language a lot better than her just because she’s Selena Gomez?! Nah not cool. She only recently (in the last few years) claimed her Mexican roots. Be better.
@@shadysorkin9214mmm well that doesn’t make sense since critics watch movies no matter their popularity. Movie critics know about all films… and have to watch them.
Well, Selena Gomez’s work on movies and tv shows are mostly in English. And that’s the same with her music as well. I don’t mind that she wants to do a role in Spanish. But listening to her as a Spanish speaker myself, I believe that she is not bad but not good. I hope she gets more Spanish speaking roles so that Selena can improve her skills.
I think the problem people have with this topic is the fact she is getting nominated for so many awards when we know one of the most important things in her role was speaking Spanish and it was pretty bad. Whoever production hired as a couch for her in this movie did a terrible job. Ana de Armas was criticized bad for Blonde and her English was better than Selena’s Spanish here.
I understand this as well but in the role she played she was supposed to be a native Spanish speaker. She can play other roles like an Mexican girl who grew up in America but the role she played and her Spanish didn’t match
I am Spanish, and I honestly don't see any problem about what he said. Her acting was very good in the movie, but her Spanish was not poor, was terrible, I could barely understand her, and that's my language. However, I applaud her for really trying.
People who knows Eugenio Derbez from back in Mexico, knows he is Ludovico from Familia Peluche in all his movies. He is a terrible actor and who has said anything about his English Just because he has some crappie movies in the US he is now a critic? You want to talk about big fail overboard remake?
As a Spanish speaking person who speaks well at it .. I understand both Eugenio and Selena.. I love them both and there mature for how they talked not with ugly slurs just as a person talking to another person with respect.. yes Selena should of work a little bit hard but she only had a little bit at time and also she always spoked English and Eugenio also I understand we’re he coming from like he wanted someone who will speak fluently Spanish because I saw a Clío and I couldn’t understand Selena unless I had the captions on which also as a Spanish speaker will love her to study it more and practice so it would of been good that’s my opinion but overall I love them both. ❤
Eugenio should apologize. There is constructive criticism and their is just being petty and vindictive. And he was being petty and vindictive. He was at the Screening of this film and posted on his social media how much he liked the film and the acting. Now he had a problem with it? Not to mention the fact that he not only attacked Seina but the fans of her work and the critics who liked her performance as well. You call that constructive criticism Graeme? Really? That's not constructive criticism Graeme, that's just being an ass hole. For Graeme to take his side and and call it constructive criticism and attack Selena's response which was way too classy for this man is a sad joke. And spare me the cancele culture nonsense, its an excuse for pushing and rewarding bad behavior. Do better Graeme, cause your bias and sexist mentality is showing.
Her Spanish 100% got in the way of the performance. I’m a bilingual American Latina and can tell you Eugenio was right. She should not have been cast in this role without significant time to speak her lines a lot better. There are no natural intonations in any word she speaks. Each word is forced out. It’s painful to listen to.
I don’t even know Spanish, I’m a Pacific Islander and yet I can tell how bad her Spanish is, that American accent is too thick. I love Selena but it was a bit cringe.
She should be thanking him, taking ownership of her spanish in this movie! He was real with you Mah, more than anyone in that movie that was kissing her as*! You're a wonderful actress and have the world at your feet! We cannot win every time, that's life! ❤
No, her acting was not bad. She did such a good job. Honestly, she sounded just like the translations made for tv like when a cartoon is translated into Spanish. I think most people were expecting a native accent which she would not have because she does not speak Spanish and I bet she did not grow up with Spanish at home. Some word were non understandable but then again most of it was good. I honestly think Eugenio has a thick accent in English and mostly understanble but then again there’s parts where he could use some help. Most Spanish actos crossing over sound like they have been trained to mimic enunciation rather than a real accent and that makes them sound foreign.
Yea, the difference is Eugenio has NEVER played a character that’s supposed to be a White native English speaker, and I don’t think he ever will… Hollywood will never do what the did with Selena. Salma Hayek and Sofia Vergara have NEVER played a native English speaker… and they never will-that’s the hypocrisy
Issimple to understand tbh, she is spanish, rejected the langague when she was young, is paying the consequences for literally doing a shit job. There is no defense, lazy work. Dont do a role you cant do just to get some importance

@lisagraymygodlife3920 the act is bad
Her response: im sorry I'm not perfect 😔. She is so dramatic.
Girl any spanish speaker would agree her performance wasn't very good 😔
Performance was decent but her accent terrible
Her acting was good but she just clearly didn't understand the words she was saying. She needed more time to learn the language.
Selena herself admits her Spanish wasn't great.
Aren't actors nominated for giving the best performance and not "I tired my best"?
Bad casting. Her spanish is awful. I’m a spanish speaker and couldn’t understand her. An Eugenio is not a great actor but he said what we were all thinking. The job was to make the character believable, she didn’t deliver
Salma Hayek english accent could be way better but it doesn’t take away from what she has done 🤷
It’s not about accents, Salma’s English is near perfect. Thick and heavy accent but she speaks properly. Selena’s Spanish was not proper. You could tell she did not feel comfortable speaking it
I speak spanish and I think is important to value her effort, because is the same when latinos keep trying to speak english at the movies, so just support each other and be polite and kind with the effort and love every actor performance.
gringos always attack mexicans
She’s trying no one’s saying that but it wasn’t very good that the truth she talented in many ways but she can’t speak Spanish and is stealing awards form better actresses because of her name that’s what people are upset over
@@juliomonasterio6230 She's getting nominated cause people do think she gave a good performance, which I'm gladly one of them. If you did not like her performance, then fine your entitled to your opinion and i respect it but to say that she's stealing her awards from others is dumb and unfounded.
Exactly
@@freddyfeliciano4468Agree everyone is
entitled to their opinion. Except Eugenio Derbes, who had to apologize for his.
Her character is an American character.... She did amazing 🤩
I mean 🤔 Eugenio's english isn't that great so 🤷
Exactly!
But her Spanish was way worse than his English, she doesn’t know words and She doesn't know how to accentuate her voice so what she said makes sense. It’s like listening to google translator.
He speaks pretty good English actually. Heavy accent yes but he has good use of words. Just saying
AGREE, maybe he was upset his daughter didn’t didn’t didn’t get the part.,
Eugenio no captó que el personaje de Selena habla inglés y español, así que da a entender que el español puede ser de alguien que no sea 100% fluido. Bravo Selena your acting was great!
I love how she was talking Spanish! It’s her character!
Well, maybe the same comment can be said about his English. It’s my understanding that she’s supposed to play a character that is NOT fluent in Spanish although she is a Latina. If that’s the case she nailed the role. Parabéns Selena🎉
Would Hollywood and Americans be okay if Eugenio plays a white native English speaker character ?
To be fair, her Spanish is as monotone and droning as her English.
A Eugenio no le gusta apoyar a los Mexicanos. Por eso salio corriendo de Mexico.
Damn I was shocked for him to bash her publicly like that I grew up watching him. He is a goat
Two songs from the film, "El Mal" (Zoe Saldana) and "Mi Camino" (Selena Gomez) have been nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Original Song - Motion Picture
So what he could have keep quiet but, no.he too after Selena Gomez she had enough haters for the past yrs leave her alone!
@@freddyfeliciano4468 Yep more than likely. The internet loves someone to hate.
@@shadysorkin9214 A lot of it boils down to racism, sexism and down right stupidity. Some people hate her cause she's not Hispanic enough for them, some hate her cause she has a loyal fan base who support her and some are sexist A holes who hate that a Latina actress has self respect for her work and defends her worth.
Se retractó de sus comentarios porque había perdido el respeto de mucha gente. Sabía que no le convenía seguir siendo visible.
Benicio del Toro played a mexican character who couldn't roll his "R" and he got an Oscar! That's MieLda!
Ok , so her Spanish wasn’t great but her performance was and to attack her smells of jealousy to me
It’s ok to say her Spanish isn’t great, but he did worse by making fun of her with that stupid lady on that podcast. she took the high road.
Eugenio Derbez has made numerous movies in English and was able to be understood… she didn’t do a good job in this. PERIOD
Do Not take Derbez or Gaby Meza 😂Siriously. I mexican and love in the border Do know. She did good
As a both English and Spanish speaker, I agree with Dude no Derbez' opinion.
His English is a nightmare,but nobody telling him.that y?
Zoe wasnt perfect either
Whoa, I didn’t know her Spanish was this bad. It’s disappointing that they choose someone who can’t speak Spanish fluently when there are so many amazing Latina actresses that would have done an amazing job. I like Selena a lot, but man they really didn’t pick the right actress for this role.
The character is not supposed to speak Spanish fluently. Watch the film and pay attention to the story.
@ I just saw this clip, I was not aware that the character was not suppose to be fluent in Spanish. However, I actually tried to
Watch the movie since I was not aware that it was out already and personally was not into it and didn’t finish it.
He shouldn't apologize, but he was being honest, so it's ok.

He shouldn’t of had apologized.
Es la verdad !!!!
His English accent isn’t that great, it’s about the acting. I think other actors would have done better playing his part in movies he acted in here in the States and there was no criticism. Be kind
Waoo, pero cuál es el problema? El inglés de Eugenio es acaso tan bueno, pues NOOO
Everyone criticizes and makes fun of Sofia Vergara's accent when she speaks English, and her accent doesn't come close to how horrible Selena spoke Spanish in that movie. Eugenio didn't have to apologize at all. The truth will set you free 🥂
Eugenio Derbes piensa que es ORSON WELLES
She could have gotten some help with her pronunciation. In the end it's more the Director's responsibility for allowing this to happen, unless that was the aim.
I feel like she’s being blamed for something that isn’t completely her fault, who was the line coach? Who wrote these lines and had her practice them? Because it’s clear that THAT person does not speak Spanish well enough to correct her lines so that she wouldn’t be humiliated by that script.
El siempre regandola. Dijo que Selina era INDEFENDIBLE. Que nadie la queria criticar por q les da miedo y luego dijo que lo sentia. Lo que pasa es que no pudo con la presión de sus fans, tómala Eugenio. 😂

what is selena going to do when she has to sing the spanish linda ronstadt mexican songs in her biopic
I think they both were very respectful about it
Parece que le dio clases de español Paulina de la Mora 😢
Bro her Spanish and acting in this particular movie was laughable. I said what I said. Mediocrity is not cute. Eugenio should have stuck with what he said.
They didn't hire a Spanish Coach. That is what you get when you try to cut corners
I’m bilingual and her Spanish sucked. It truly was terrible. Eugenio didn’t need to apologize for saying the truth.

Be better.

I hope she learns Spanish first and then she can look for more Spanish speaking roles
He is a terrible actor and who has said anything about his English
Just because he has some crappie movies in the US he is now a critic?
Today's generation : Speak the truth, apologize after. But do speak it.
He did apologize 🤦♂️ always gotta be someone like you to continue spreading bs 😂
@cervzzz3262 What B.S? That he's an ass hole and should have apologize? Eugenio brought all of this on himself. He deserves what he's getting.
@ exactly!
Issimple to understand tbh, she is spanish, rejected the langague when she was young, is paying the consequences for literally doing a shit job. There is no defense, lazy work. Dont do a role you cant do just to get some importance
So criticism is unacceptable for a beloved social media star? It is unacceptable. She doesn't even speak english clearly. Her acting is generally emotionless.
