I wouldn't know, but given that it's hard to pull over and call a mechanic at 5.000ft ASL, pilots might be well advised to know a bit more about engines than your average car driver.
its not a bad idea, as a pilot its pretty vital you are able to trouble shoot any issues and at least have basic understanding so you know what to look for when doing inspection as well as start up and shut down, its our responsibility to let ATC and ground control, of any malfunctions or problems we notice , and its important to have basic understanding so that we can make the judgment of if the plane is safe to fly or not, how to handle a problem in flight or during landing
