You're supposed to fold at the notches so that it fits you right. There should be two pairs - one pair at your cheekbones and one on the sides of your jaw.
the lines on the mask are there so you can overlap them to fit your face, and they also create more surface area so they fit bigger faces. cutting them is just adding extra redundant steps lol.
