In this collaboration with the talented David Girsh, I discuss our Busselton Jetty marine sanctuary and talk about steps we can take to keep it one of the best underwater tourism destinations in Western Australia.
The Busselton Jetty provides visitors with a unique opportunity to have a glimpse into the underwater world! The vibrant soft corals and sponges growing on the jetty’s pylons attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
It is home to a great abundance and diversity of marine species. Marine mammals like dolphins, small sharks and rays, octopus, squid, and a plethora of other fish call the Busselton Jetty home.
But the marine sanctuary encompasses only about the last 150 meters of the Busselton Jetty, and overfishing is evident here.
Our goal is to encourage the powers that be to more thoroughly police illegal fishing in the marine sanctuary and even to expand the marine sanctuary beyond the diving platform.
Expanding the marine sanctuary beyond the diving platform will provide a greater area of healthy artificial reef for visitors to enjoy. It would also make diving the Busselton Jetty a lot more safe, because divers getting hooked by fishing lines has been a problem.

The ocean cannot survive without sharks. And if the ocean dies, we die. This whole area needs to be a marine sanctuary. People can fish somewhere else, and the nearby sanctuary will make fishing better by replenishing the fish populations. And the local community will benefit from the tourism too. Everybody wins.

Fishing supports busselton. You would know this if you were a real local. While I understand what you are trying to say and appreciate it. You need to understand there are two sides to the coin. If fisherman get pushed off the jetty there won't be funding for the upgrades you want so badly.

“Real Local” or not, I do have to live and work here and have a sufficient understanding of the health of the marine environment here.
I can appreciate that there are financial concerns as well… which I admittedly no less about. If fishing does indeed currently provide more funding for the jetty than the other tourism offerings, it seems to me that over a longer period of time that would cease to be the case. When there’s no more fish to be caught and no more fish to be seen underwater, then everyone loses - and there’s very little money to be made in this scenario.
No one’s suggesting to end fishing on the jetty altogether. But if illegal fishing is better policed, more regulations are put in place to mitigate overfishing, and the marine sanctuary is expanded… this should extend the healthy lifespan and productivity of the jetty’s underwater ecosystem and allow for many more years of funding from both underwater tourism and responsible fishing practices.
I appreciate your feedback, Lacy. It's good to hear from you to help me gain a fuller understanding of the issues here.
