What a beautiful program for a deserving artist and scholar! I will mention a single story. It was 1977, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Suchitra-di (Mitra) was visiting us. She gave a recital during a storm at the University of Minnesota. After the program, she was at my apartment. There were several other Bengali music lovers. We were simply chatting. I asked her about two things- the Rabindrasangeet singers her contemporary (sort of) that she liked and the budding artists. For the first, her response was (in no particular order)- Shanti-da (Shanti Deb Ghosh), George (Debabrata Biswas), Pankaj-da (Pankaj Kumar Mullick), Hemanta (Mukhopadhyay), Mohar (Kanika Bandyopadhyay), Bacchu (Nilima Sen), Subinoy-da (Subinoy Roy), Santosh-da (Santosh Sengupta), and Kalim (Kalim Sharafi).. For the second question, her response was- watch out for Ritu (Guha), Rama (Mandal), Purba (Dam), Pramita (Mullick), Arghya (Sen), and from Bangladesh- Iffat Ara Dewan and Sadi Mohammad. Suchitra-di knew talent when she saw one. All of her predictions came true. Dr. Ajit Thakur (USA).
