The ending was completely unexpected with the monster, but I was wondering if the Grandfather had a stroke which left him w/locked in syndrome (iirc - your mind is okay but you can’t move a muscle) because he looked scared at dinner when Cody and his grandmother were fighting. Cody’s very easy to empathize with, he seemed really nice. :)
