A simply super movie - 6 stars and Michael Douglas best film and superb support by Masa. Great work by Ridley Scott and an atmospheric and perfect score by Hans Zimmer!!
I always tell People this movie was cooler in the late 80s besides Wall Street than Michael Douglas against the Japanese Yakuza …directed by Ridley Scott 😮
Terrific from start to finish! One of Ridley Scotts best ever movies with Gladiator! Michael Douglas and the Japanese Actor that played Inspector Masamoto were simply superb! Six stars to all!!
Fantastic film and great cast! Hans Zimmers scoring for this movie was simply outstanding and a musical classic as he has captured the spirit and ethos of Japan and the Japanese people! Few Western composers could have done that!
This movie had one of the most satisfying endings I've seen in an 80's film and the score embodied that ending almost perfectly. Beautiful and Powerful.

I like how it subverts expectations. It's set up to do the cliche "the bad guy gets it" scene; but then bam, they walk his ass into the station with that perfect theme playing.
One ofvthe things that I love more is The fact that in all 1980's actuó móviles The villain should hace bern executed by The Hero, speccially if that villain murdered The hero'd movie. But Ridley Scott decided that Michael Douglas's hace to respect The moral Code of a honest cop because he knows that be a dishoniur for Massa, o he arrested and delivered him alive.

Saw this in theater in NYC in the 80's. Unforgettable scene, redemption, forgiveness, acceptance by both Douglas and Ken-san's character. Such great characters! Hard to believe they were acting, its that good. Can't remake this - impossible. RIP Ken-san. :(
Douglas thumbs up and smile are so genuine we could say those guys were TRUE friends and not just professional actors at work. Mr. Takakura was also a legend in acting in this movie. A true talent to be remembered and celebrated.
Ultimately, a fantastic story of redemption for 2 men. Great film. For Nick, it was about reclaiming his honor. Nick admitted to Maas that he had taken dirty money from drug busts in the United States when he was having a rough time keeping up with expenses with just his salary. Maas reminded Nick that doing so was dishonorable to all cops including Maas, his deceased partner Charlie and most of all to himself. Maas's refusal to give up on Nick and putting his own neck on the line to capture Sato helped Nick to truly understand his past dishonor. Nick leaving the plates behind showed Maas that Nick truly got the message and he reclaimed his honor. For Maas, the redemption was for his previous multiple failures to finish any important job because of his refusal to stray from the rigid tactics his culture and training required. Nick showed him a different and effective way to get the job done by trusting his partner in the face of difficult odds and risk to his career while keeping his honor in the end.
Really not that hard to do, just time it from when the door is kicked open at the police station... after that it's more or less one continuous music cue until the Greg Allman song starts for the credits.

Except Nick’s so-called redemption includes corrupting Masa. Providing him with the two imprinting plates … (paraphrasing): “if someone had both, they’d be set for life” from earlier in the movie. So, they were not turned in as police evidence but instead covertly gifted to Masa. Earlier, Masa made Nick feel shame for skimming proceeds of crime.

I must have listened to this a 100 times in the last month alone. The video is great to watch while listening. They don't make movies like this these days! And while hans zimmer has gone on to write so many amazing film scores I think this one is still my favourite from him
When he mentioned the plates, he did think they were lost. But then Douglas replied back about how whoever had them could print up a fortune. You can see Ken's face change at that moment, and he maintained that disappointed look until he saw the plates in the box. Look at how his face changes from roughly 3:05 to about 3:20. Everything about his expression says "huh. let me get this liar out of here."

One of my favorite movies!! Thank you for this video🤩 Redemption, honor in our personal values, pardoning ourselves and going on with ulterior mission that we choose, truthful friendship... and more! Woooow! I watched "Black Rain" in movie theater when it was presented: with all the action scenes and powerful music you could feel everyone so excited. "BLACK RAIN" is marvelous😍 I also love that last kiss: full of sincere wish of blessings and complicity in all that was happening to Mr. Douglas' character... an ever lasting friendship also? Perhaps😉...
This is one of the best tracks from the movie’s score. It truly captures the spirit of triumph from the capture of Sato and the redemption of Nick Conklin and Matsumoto-San. One of the best “good guys come out on top” moments from the 80’s
Perhaps the only thing that could have made the scene more memorable would have been to have Matsumoto enter with his ‘battlefield pick-up’ Yakuza H&K MP5A3 sub machine gun reverse-slung over his strong side (right) shoulder with no magazine in the well, action locked open to show the weapon is Safe, and after he announces the capture and custody of Sato, slips the slung SMG off his shoulder and sets it down on the nearest desk with a heavy metallic clunk, thereby establishing his credentials as one bad ass cop. Just a thought…
What a great ending to a film, all of the osaka prefecture police officers watching mas and nick in awe and shock with both men holding onto sato in their clutches, as they finally redeemed themselves, with the theme song play and kick in as they walk over to chief ohashi... While Charlie looks down from heaven feeling so proud of nick and mas. 👏👏
Thank you for the wonderful job of combining the end of the movie with this fantastic score. I saw this movie in the theater in Salinas, CA a couple days after being released in the fall of 1989, and after I just returned from a deployment to Panama, I was stationed at Ft. Just watched it. Can't believe I only know about this amazing film now! Love Nick and Masahiro relationship, from hating each other to becoming friends. And this song got stuck to my head since!
Since I was 10 iv been mesmerised with this country. This film is one of my favourites. Iv been wanting to see Tokyo for a very long time. I'm 40 this year and my tickets booked for September. Tokyo here I come 😃
One of my favourite films of all time. I have had a long lasting love and respect for japan and its culture. I have no idea why but it's been there for 30 years. I'd love to go there someday.
When I was 15, I tried to find this ost.And it was impossible. So directly ordered from virgin record USA.It was 1990 in Korea. Hans zimmer was unknown, so it was very difficult to get his music.
Actor playing sato was the costliest actor of Asia when he did this movie.. Costlier than Amitabh Bachchan, Chiranjeevi, Rajnikant or Jacke Chan. Both of his sons are superstars of Japanese movies & tv shows.
The thing is this film is kinda a buddy movie. Both men learned from each. Nick the importance of honour and doing the right thing again and japanese Guy that sometimes you gotta break the rules to get the job done. Both men earning each other’s respect. The relationship of these two characters making the film.
Thank you for posting this. Did not know it had a soundtrack. I will most definitely get this. Love love this movie since it first came out. 🍃 Thank you for posting🍃
The very essence of 80s soundtracks, cinematography & directing was captured so seamlessly & superbly in this scene, while there is an avant garde quality to it, made more so with that exquisitely perfected balance that was displayed between the Eastern & Western elements (within an Eastern Japanese context, yet with palpable overtones of fierce NYC badassery evident in Douglas's very well played characterization), all of it flowing smoothly into one marvelous & fascinating scene, with the traditional, mystically reflective Eastern score driving it so beautifully, so powerfully (there is just something healing & divine about it, this music, full of deep soulful redemption, ancient tranquility & spiritual fulfillment, with echoes of a much earlier age, featuring a sense of honor restored, of dignity revived, of noble ideals met & maintained, of an honorable duty bound warrior who has served with exemplary dedication, fealty & integrity, therefore thoroughly redeeming himself & his brave forebears, thus recapturing his honor, in their eyes!). Just amazing! This whole scene, along with basically the rest of the movie. Great Stuff!

Just watched it. Can't believe I only know about this amazing film now! Love Nick and Masahiro relationship, from hating each other to becoming friends. And this song got stuck to my head since!
Reminds me my childhood. One of my best films. The soundtrack the acting the story ...everything 😊
Since I was 10 iv been mesmerised with this country. This film is one of my favourites. Iv been wanting to see Tokyo for a very long time. I'm 40 this year and my tickets booked for September. Tokyo here I come 😃
Hope you are there now. Enjoy.
For the real experience, you should go to Dotonbori in Osaka where they shot the movie on the bridge!
A MASTERPIECE! The music and the movie!!! thanks for posting!
One of my favorite movies of all time!!! It's a masterpiece!
Marvelous movie,and the music,excptional
One of my favourite films of all time. I have had a long lasting love and respect for japan and its culture. I have no idea why but it's been there for 30 years. I'd love to go there someday.
Such a masterpiece! Solid and moving.
The calendar ath the beginning of this scene is November 1988. In Japan the 3rd and the 23th of November are Holidays.
Yusaku matsuda who played villain in this movie was the costliest actor in all of Asia when he was filming this movie
When I was 15, I tried to find this ost.And it was impossible. So directly ordered from virgin record USA.It was 1990 in Korea. Hans zimmer was unknown, so it was very difficult to get his music.
same had to go to london and buy it at my first visit at forbidden planet :)
My favorite Michael Douglas film. Used to have a cassette tape of the Black Rain soundtrack, but lost it years ago.
A great movie and a spectacular ending !!!
A really great underrated movie. Thank you for posting this bit of the score. It's a good soundtrack too. I purchased it and the movie.
Actor playing sato was the costliest actor of Asia when he did this movie.. Costlier than Amitabh Bachchan, Chiranjeevi, Rajnikant or Jacke Chan. Both of his sons are superstars of Japanese movies & tv shows.
Badass movie and score.
My memories, haha :)
Me too, then I was told it was an American vision of Japan and I started to consider it just like a action movie for teenager.
Nice,maybe he's got 2 fives for a 10.
Thank you for this great video. Black Rain is a master piece.
The thing is this film is kinda a buddy movie. Both men learned from each. Nick the importance of honour and doing the right thing again and japanese Guy that sometimes you gotta break the rules to get the job done. Both men earning each other’s respect. The relationship of these two characters making the film.
Just as you sayed.👍🏻
I would recommend another kinda buddy movie with Ken Takakura and Robert Mitchum. The Yakuza. You will not be disappointed.
He dont want nick to bow but instead he just wanted him to shake hands. He had so much respect to nick.RIP Takakura.
Ken and yusaku LEGENDJapaneseactor❗

One of the best Films ever!!!
