i’m trying to break down every detail of this magnificent music video and there’s just much, im completely in awe!! i love how she tied her past songs to this video! the moment at 3:30 where her past self & current self were playing cards on the floor, and her past self assumed The King is the strongest card in the deck. The King is Sarah’s biggest song, I mean it went viral on tiktok and is still used in every other video! In hills of fire, her lyrics repeat “i can’t stay the king forever”… I think her current self is recognizing the transformation she went through, realizing that she doesn’t just have to stop there. she’s not just “the king”, she’s expanding out into so much more…
ALSOOO i just rewatched all of her other videos, and I noticed in the beginning of this her past self is wearing the same dress & coat from the Hills of Fire music video!! anyone else have any thoughts on this?
I had the same exact thoughts! You can tie Hills of Fire and King into this because Cypress precisely shows Sarah’s feelings towards her career.
Hills of fire is about how she needed to run away from the publicity she gained from King as it overtook her life and was overwhelming. Cypress is a direct link to both of these which is why she’s talking to herself about “Was it everything we wanted and more? Everything we left the garden for.”
The garden is most likely a reference to her past life because she gained popularity as the garden of Eden was seen as perfect yet predictable

It’s about being in a parallel universe and the two versions of her one is from the afterlife the other is from reality.
How is nobody else pointing out the allusions to call me by your name?? The piano in the intro, resting each other’s heads on their shoulders, and crying by the candles (swapped in for the fireplace) at the end!! It’s all there.

I just discovered Sarah Kinsley 40 minutes ago through 'The King' mv and... wow... I have been missing out for so long! She is everything I could've ever wanted both artistically and musically. The direction and creativity behind her music videos is so so so incredible, I wish I'd known her before now but it is truly an amazing experience getting to immerse myself into the universe she's created through her music. absolutely amazing work! i love this song and artist so much. i would just like to say- this is me just now realizing two years later what this song is actually about🤣 4:11 i’ve been googling and deep diving about “Who is Cypress???” for too long😭 that she’s talking to her younger self (the king/ the song ) and her younger self shouldn’t even know about cypress (the ep/ the song) yet. i absolutely adore sarah’s music because it makes you think (for me- i thought for LITERAL YEARS). there’s obviously more layers than that in this song, BUT I FOUND OUT WHO CYPRESS WAS🤣🤩
