6 years later and this is still the best tutorial for this I can find. I was hoping there was an easier way by now, but I guess not. Glad this video exists!
Since this tutorials was done long ago, I am not sure if anybody will check new comments, but here it goes. This is by far the best tutorial about folding paper/origami I've been able to find. This is awesome. I followed the tutorial and to be honest got lost a couple of times and come up with some weird results (like the U ending up on the last frame completely twisted on not in place, but I was able to fix it, with some crappy tricks. I would love to see another tutorial using the same trick, maybe simple but going into what all the numbers, turns and twists are happening during the animation. In any case F%#@ing impressive. Keep'em coming
Just took this tutorial and using the effect on precomps of text/shape for a visual timeline. Something I found out: it's very finicky, and after some troubleshooting headache I realized that you have to make sure your timeline marker is at the END of your sequence (or at least after the animation keyframes of the folding shape layers) BEFORE you parent the layers you want visible to each folding shape layer. If you parent before the shapes animate, then you get some wonky position and orientation numbers. Not sure if this only happens with precomps or not - but something to look out for!
Yea great tutorial, like in some of the other comments someone mentioned precomposing your animation (just the triangles). I found this to work much easier with what I was doing (I was using an image instead of a shape or letter). And it makes your precomp less busy so its easier to go in and alter changes if need be.
10 years later!! here i am !!! amazing tutorial. really!! but super frustrating because of some keyframes values missing. i have spent fews hours try to understand the logic and to guess which of these missing figures will do it. but without success!! sad about that!! thank you anyway for this very good job!!
This is great, I was looking for something else, stumbled on your video and watched it to the end. Interesting technique. But... You could create all triangles in photoshop as layers, keep the design you like, in its particular order and turn it 3D, save the psd, import the file into after effects keeping all 3D layers, and link them. Now, there's also plug-ins for this.
If you get the gaps between the objects after you animated it, it's nearly impossible to add a stroke. What I did to get around that: I put a matte choker on it. Everything but grey softness 2 and choke 1 to 0, grey softness 2 at 100% and the choke 1 to a a number below 0. the number depends on how big your gaps are. if you made 1, simply cut it from the object, select all objects you want to put it on and paste it into the effects control panel. It applies it to all the selected objects.
I know Im asking the wrong place but does someone know of a trick to get back into an instagram account? I somehow lost the login password. I love any tricks you can give me!
@Asa Misael thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
well, it took me 5 hours and lots of replays but it worked, thanks for great tutorial and making me seem a hell of a lot smarter then i really am to my intern ceo
Love your tutorials. They are AMAZING!!! One trick I came across when dealing with a more complex symmetrical letter is to use masks on the type layer rather than adding rectangles to the shape layers so that it doesn't interfere with the animation of the shapes but you don't have to tinker with the positioning as much or add a group to modify the rotation :) Thanks so much for these tutorials...always eagerly awaiting new ones!
Very cool effect! Though I did find that you don't need to duplicate a Track Matte for each layer. You could precompose your first animated half including the light, duplicate like you did in the tutorial flip the duplicate and use 2 Mattes or precompose again and use one Track Matte for the final.
Make sure you adjust the ORIENTATION z value and not just the z rotation value for your first rotation. I was really confused as to why my x rotation wasn't folding the second triangle behind the first. Then I watched the tutorial more closely.
Correct me if I'm wrong, But I think you can use the "Set Matte" effect on each of the triangles and target the "U" do you font have to make a copy for each triangle. I haven't tried it though.
Hey man, it's been 2 years but idk if you know this trick. No need to duplicate layer and do a ton of step like that, just put the text layer on top of all the layers, chose Mode: Stencil Alpha, and BAAAM! Here is it.
Great tutorial. How would i use a png or psd instead of a letter. the letter is bringing in the option fro Trk Matte as the others are not. I am stuck on this step HELP!!!
The toggle layers didn't work for me, so I had to go in manually and re-parent the letters to the shapes one by one, then change the alpha matte as I went along. Worked fine from there.
I'm not sure if it's because this tutorial is 3 years old or there's something I'm missing, but the only way I get this to somewhat work is to leave the text layers 2d. It's not the same, but it kind of works. When I turn the text layer 3d I get that weird freaking million3d U's thing folding in on themselves, but when I alpha matte, nothing happens.
Hi Evan, I would like to ask how could you "snap" the rectangle to align them with right edge? Ian using CC however, when I hold on the Command as you said, the anchor point is moving. Could you please clarify this? Many Thanks
Couldn't you have precomposed the unfolding pattern, dragged it in above the letter and enabled collapse transformations then simply set the text layer as an alpha matte in the same way?
My graph editor always looks different to other people when doing tutorials. Like my keyframe graphs are never the same. I have a Left sided v instead at 6:47
hi all really the tut is awesome. but can anyone tell me why he parented in sequential manner? OR why did he parented? any bestest tutorial that can make me understand for parenting in detail? please share the links_thanks. do reply!
hi, i've tried to use this technique in folding a whole screen of 1920x1080. however it only works until row 3 and then doesn't fold properly, can it be done to fold a whole screen to triangles?
+Ash Ryohei I had the same issue. Make sure you click on the name of the layer first, move the object, and then hold down ctrl (or on a mac cmnd). Do NOT click ctrl first.
For some reason the track mattes don't seem to work on 3D layer in my file. Very frustrating. I'm using After Effects CC. If I turn off the 3D layers I can trkmat the U and root layers but then the 3D animation is no longer there, and if I keep the 3D layers on and try to trkmat the U layers stay whole so I have the crazy looking multi U accordion animation. Any suggestions?
hey there! I think this was just the tutorial I was looking for :P do you think this process would be difficult to adapt for transitioning between two photos?
+McNibbler - If you have CS5, it won't snap. You need AE CC for snapping. If you have AE CC, hold down Command key while you click near a corner, then drag. Optionally, check "Snapping" at the top of your AE CC tool panel, then start dragging/snapping. While that is checked, you can hold down "Command" key to temp disengage snapping. FYI.. snapping also works for the Pan Behind (Anchor Point) tool.
Fantastic tutorial! I'm using this effect on a number of precomps in a project, and I've run into the need to scale them up. I'm not using the precomps directly in the main project - I'm pre-rendering them to save computing power. Is there a good way to scale up an object that already has the folding effect done? My attempts have messed up the positioning of the triangles, creating crazy wack stuff. Thanks!
Nur Sabrina Thanks. Follow up to that - since there are many layers, each parented to others, in a single instance of this unfolding effect, how would you go about using a null object to scale up the entire thing?
Nur Sabrina Thanks. That's what I initially tried, but scaling up the precomp seems to result in a loss of resolution. Scaling down it wouldn't be a problem. I initially just scaled up the precomp directly (using the scale attribute for the layer). Would scaling with a null object somehow avoid the loss of sharp edges in the precomp?
At 6:45 you convert to easy ease and you have it start and end at 0. I have done the exact same as you and mine do not. It starts off split with 2 points, one at +180 and -180 and ends at 0. do you know why this is CS5.5 Thanks
Problem here: When I use 3D layer on the triangle, the 3D point appears in the middle of the screen instead in the corner of the triangle. What can I do to resolve that?
I am using cs 6 on windows and I am really stuck at the snapping the root2 to root which is at the beginning of the video and is kind of demoting :-( as I don't know how to do it some plz help me? IfWaiting for you replies....
Hello, I would like to ask... I am working on a project that need a double sided paper( different colour) and fold it into a paper origami... I want to ask, how can I change the colour of one specific fold?
You'd have to copy whatever is inside your precomposed layer, paste it outside of it, then create another whole new precomposed layer. This would make it independent from the other precomposed layer and you could change the color, or add any effect for that matter, without affecting the others.
Stuck on the easy easy keyframe section. When going into the graph editor the graph is different and I noticed only one of layers is highlighted in a dark red rather than the normal pink. Can anyone help me?
I was looking at that too... I think you can use a Venetian Blinds effect and then animate the width in the effect. Need to try first and see if it works.

+PIECES OF (my) LIFE (Trocitos de Vida) I'm also impressed by these tutorial, haven't tried it yet but it's on my to do :)
I can't agree with you more. This IS the best tutorial on unfolding.
and his breaks it down very well.

the point light really expresses motions...very nice
That was by far one of the best and most concise tutorials I've ever seen! Thank you for sharing the knowledge :)
Couldn't agree more!
I envy people that are this impressive with AE. So much to learn!! Great tutorial 👌

OH man, you have no idea how helpful this is. Cheers!!!

Watching these videos is like watching magic happen.
Save all that parenting and put the U at the top with a Stencil Alpha blending mode. The triangle technique is super nice!
This is great, I was looking for something else, stumbled on your video and watched it to the end. Interesting technique. But... @Asa Misael It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my account :D
@Santino Alessandro no problem =)
man, I've done this again and again, thank you so much
well, it took me 5 hours and lots of replays but it worked, thanks for great tutorial and making me seem a hell of a lot smarter then i really am to my intern ceo

Will this work with a word? Like would it work if I used the word magazine?
Thank you. Great video. You are an excellent teacher!
you are the legend man!
Really cool I liked it !! even it's didn't work fine with me but I got the idea behind it !! thanks so much bro .. :D
Thank you, beautiful effect!

Tried this. Isn't working for me.
You are a genius!
Except it doesn't move each shape in 3D, but still much easier
Thanks a lot for the tutorial, helped a lot!!
superb work. salute
Sir thanku soooooooo muchhhhhhh God Bless u 😍😍😍😍💕💕💕💕
hey man love the video, thanks for uploading!
i have to set multiple keys for x/z-rotation and orientation for these triangles. The witchcraft you're using if muchos confusing-os.
Thanks, man. I'm doing a tiki's Tok vid with this ill try to drop a link.
It will be amazing if we could get an script that would match the bottom left figure position with its anchor point position.
really cool! Thank you!
I was the 2000th person to like this video
arrrrrr
I like this guy
could be possible to do an animated origami bird being folded? with the original shapes, not just triangles?
you are a genius ... very very cool
sos genial , me gustan mucho tus tutoriales ... ( i like yours tuts )

Great tutorial!!

Yes that was what I was thinking he was going to do!
Thanks for this suggestion. It helped me because had some problems with the original technique.
amazing tutorial thanks! you are great explainning, reminds me a bit of Bob Ross, not so extreme of course but very peaceful
You can do this so much faster in C4D. Good tutorial though
very good
very nice bro..
My graph editor always looks different to other people when doing tutorials. Like my keyframe graphs are never the same. I have a Left sided v instead at 6:47
Lights are not working for me, draft 3d is on and in classic viewport. Any ideas?
That moment when the tutorial is so good that you have to clap
Thanks, Evan! thank you for this effing great work you do =D
realy like it! Thanks
So Amazing and Smart .. Liked the Technique Bro :)
hi all
really the tut is awesome.
but can anyone tell me why he parented in sequential manner? OR why did he parented?
any bestest tutorial that can make me understand for parenting in detail? please share the links_thanks.
do reply!
amazing .. thanks, subscribed
perfect, wonderful
nice very helpfully....for me.
hi, i've tried to use this technique in folding a whole screen of 1920x1080. however it only works until row 3 and then doesn't fold properly, can it be done to fold a whole screen to triangles?
Abrams is the boss!
Hi, I'm having a problem with connect the triangle....I just press ctrl and drag them, but it didnt work, please reply this premium beat.
+Ash Ryohei I had the same issue. Make sure you click on the name of the layer first, move the object, and then hold down ctrl (or on a mac cmnd). Do NOT click ctrl first.
Great! Thanks a lot!
i'm stuck on 10:44, where he said to scale up the thing. He pushes a shortkey, I think, but I can't seem to find a way to fit it with the letter.
whats your shortcut for clicking and dragging to duplicate a layer?
For some reason the track mattes don't seem to work on 3D layer in my file. Very frustrating. I'm using After Effects CC. If I turn off the 3D layers I can trkmat the U and root layers but then the 3D animation is no longer there, and if I keep the 3D layers on and try to trkmat the U layers stay whole so I have the crazy looking multi U accordion animation. Any suggestions?
Cyndi Foster same here.
Muito bom efeito!!! SHOW DE BOLA!!!
hey there! I think this was just the tutorial I was looking for :P
do you think this process would be difficult to adapt for transitioning between two photos?
Hello, I have problems with Alpha Matte, the triangles do not intersect with the edge of the letter I would like to know how to fix it. Thank You!
make sure the matte (letter shape) is above the object
Is there any reason why I can't seem to snap my layers together? I tried holding shift and control and nothing will get my corners to snap at all.
+McNibbler - If you have CS5, it won't snap. You need AE CC for snapping. If you have AE CC, hold down Command key while you click near a corner, then drag.

i had cs6 which doesn't have snapping for some stupid reason so I downloaded a plugin that snaps the anchor point to a spot
Hey Evan, can u by any chance tell me how to create ur intro thirds that appear at 0:26.. it would be a great help... thanks
Wait how did u get the anchor thing and how did u pop up the x y z Rotation
I'm abit confused.. ?
"Should have thought about that at the beginning shouldn't you, it's too late now."

Bryan McKaig null layer
Nur Sabrina Thanks. Follow up to that - since there are many layers, each parented to others, in a single instance of this unfolding effect, how would you go about using a null object to scale up the entire thing?
you can pre comp it so it's a composition within a composition, then resize with the null layer in the master composition
Nur Sabrina Thanks. That's what I initially tried, but scaling up the precomp seems to result in a loss of resolution. Scaling down it wouldn't be a problem. I initially just scaled up the precomp directly (using the scale attribute for the layer). Would scaling with a null object somehow avoid the loss of sharp edges in the precomp?
im not sure about that then, sorry!!
Sorry, I cannot understand, what did you press to connect triangles on 2:57? You said ctrl or command, but it doesn't work :((((
Windows (Ctrl + Drag) Snapping feature on Adobe AE CS5.5 doesn't work? Any help?

I have this too!
I found the answer here www.premiumbeat.com/blog/video-tutorial-unfolding-animation-in-adobe-after-effects/
Thank you!!
@@marianojmartin where??
good!!!!! thank you~~~^^
Problem here: When I use 3D layer on the triangle, the 3D point appears in the middle of the screen instead in the corner of the triangle. What can I do to resolve that?
move it
if u mean the anchor point u right click the tringle , transform , anchor point
and change it's position hope i helped
Help ! I have the same problem
Hi! How do you enable snap a form to another form
how to show only "x rotation" on layers panel?
I am using cs 6 on windows and I am really stuck at the snapping the root2 to root which is at the beginning of the video and is kind of demoting :-( as I don't know how to do it some plz help me? IfWaiting for you replies....
I'm new too, use the pick whip tool and parent root 2 to root 1
you hold down the control button with no layer selection. While you hold the control button click on root 2 and drag it to root and it will work

got the same problem
That's because you are viewing a Value Graph. You have to choose "Edit Speed Graph" from the dropdown menu below.
cool
Omg EC how do you do the Animation in 0.23 & 0.33 seconds
Where you slide in your name and PremiumBeat
Plsssssss tell me
Or anyone else?
I was looking at that too... I think you can use a Venetian Blinds effect and then animate the width in the effect. Need to try first and see if it works.
mine is not snapping in points :( is there any other way of unfolding and folding? :(
use alt not ctrl
***** hi , i downloaded anchor script point . but i dont know how to use it for this . can u tell me??
Do you have the newest version of after effects?
cs 6 don't have it
how do I snap for AE cs6 Mac ???
Nice Tutorial but no Snapping. CS5
it's a good technique but not easy to follow

ı think ı understand thanks very much sir
I'm stuck on the graphing part... Cause my graph doesn't look like that at all.
brainstorm986 go down on a little box under the graph and it'll say there: Edit speed graph... click that one
I found that out awhile back when I was playing around with the graph editor. I got it finished. but thank you anyways.
hey how to snap the point?
TOP!!!
any shortcut way ?
apruven...^^
here's wishing this tutorial wasn't over 6 years old :(
and that adobe didn't change the name and position of every option every few years
Thanks .... :)
Hay una manera mas sencilla
Not working for image.....wasted my time on doing it.......
