  • In April 2013, John Wilde of Carthage, Ill., was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rapidly progressive neurological disease that attacks nerves cells that control voluntary muscle movement. Over time, muscles in the diaphragm and chest wall fail, meaning that patients lose the ability to breathe on their own. Most ALS patients die within a few years after symptoms appear. Through the ALS Clinic at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, John is participating in a clinical research trial of a diaphragmatic pacing system that can make breathing easier and could improve his quality of life. While not a cure, the clinical trial gives the Wilde family the possibility of hope-and more time.
