Barry Lather choreographed this performance, the '87 AMA performance, and "The Pleasure Principle' music video. That's him behind Janet, on the left, with the mullet. He was a dancer in the "Nasty" music video. Janet really liked what she saw on set and promoted him. Janet wanted him to choreograph the "Control' video as well but he was under contract for another gig.
So I literally did this entire performance in 3rd grade for a school talent show. The funny part is I had another performance already worked out, and this awards show came on two or three weeks before the day of the talent show. Once I saw this I immediately changed the plan and did this instead. Iconic Janet!
I was already a Janet fan, but this performance right here…when I saw this on the very night of the performance, I knew, really knew that she was a force to be reckoned with. She had me wearing all black, I died my high top fade blue black, it got so bad my friends jokingly called me “Janet” 😆.
I lost my mind when I first saw this performance! She also killed it on the American Music Awards this same awards season. She performed Control and was fantastic. Bonus Diana Ross hosted the ceremony and when introducing Janet referred to her as like a “favorite niece!” 🥲🥲🥲
This was one of my earliest memories ever! I was 3 years old and obsessed with Janet and Michael. I use to sleep with both Control and Bad cassette tapes instead of a teddy bear 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awesome!! Wasnt expecting this reaction so quick!! Its absolute fire and i still rewatch this to this day but she killed it like no one else!! She was a beast in this performance and she got better as she got older.
I never noticed how much Janet was ingrained in the Minneapolis sound. Great performance showing that she could stand on Janet not just her last name Jackson.
Paula Abdul did NOT teach Janet how to dance. She choreographed a few of Janet's videos. Janet was dancing since she was a little girl on The Jackson's Variety Show & the TV show 'Fame'.
Empress. I'm so glad you did this one. I was about 23 when this aired. Of course back then you pretty much had to have seen it on TV or you were outta luck! I remember being GLUED to the screen and it was what we called back then, a " watercooler moment" because the next day at work, it was OMG! Did you see Janet last night?!? Aside from the videos that had been out from the Control album no one had seen Janet perform like that live. It was a moment I'll always remember! Thanks for reacting to it!😊💖
....ALLRIGHT, EMPRESS!!! ...I was THERE, February of 1987, so let's DISCUSS.... ...this was the equivalent for Janet, what MJ did at the Motown 25 Special...she BLEW OUT from the shell of her Family, and became... ***MISS JACKSON!!! *** Many firsts, here... - Janet was the FIRST performer to wear a 'headset' mic in a 'Live' performance.... - Janet was the FIRST performer to perform a 'medley' set of her NEW material.... - Janet was the FIRST performer to feature her Producers, in a "staged" set.... - Janet was the FIRST performer to do intricate, TIGHT choreography, in HEELS... - Janet was the FIRST performer to feature a interpolation of a 12" 'remix' ("Nasty") in her set... - Janet was the FIRST (80's) performer, to feature pre-recorded 'live' Vocals mixed within her set (...standard practice then, but, her "Control" (12" remix), helped push it into the open....) ....AND, Janet's Body was snnnnnatched HARD here; She had some time off, after filming the "Control" Video (where she was bit fuller), but, showed OUT with this hot, EARNED figure!! ....giving *BOOTY* for HOURS!! ...AND, PRINCE'S influence is ALL over this...BUT! ...It's 'influence', NOT 'theft'...Janet was the first GIRL to feature this type of performance Funk (Sheila E. & Klymaxx introduced it); Janet had the TALENT to see it through, for general audiences.... ...and we were BLOWN AWAY!! ....*EVERYONE* was talking about it the NEXT DAY! ....White, Black, G-y....didn't matter, Janet ARRIVED!! ...Right after that, "Let's Wait Awhile" & "The Pleasure Principle" were released and Janet SLAYED, left and RIGHT! ...A very, VERY important performance in her HISTORY.....
Were you in the audience for this performance? If so how close or how far were you to the stage? I don't know if Janet or Madonna were the first ones who danced in heels for a tight choreography but Madonna did danced in heels for a tight choreography for her 85 Virgin Tour. 😘
@@dalee72 ....NO, I wasn't in the audience, I meant watching it that ONE TIME (NO internet back then)... and, I KNEW my 'heels' comment was gonna be dangerous! ..ha-HAAA!! ..I MEANT, that Janet was doing more strenuous, tighter, stiffer dancing, with less 'Flashdance' like moves, that were the norm, then...Women were dancing in Heels FOREVER, but, THIS style (Paula's introduced style), was new, and only JANET 'perfected' it...If ANYTHING, moreso, than Paula!
Finally! Been waiting for you to review this…this is one of her best live performances just fresh off her performance of Control on the AMAs several months earlier. She was nominated for Album of year only to be snubbed out by Paul Simon. Also the Choreographer for this was the guy to her right. I believe his name in Barry Lather.
This was a kick ass performance! You should react to her songs and music videos for What Have You Done For Me Lately, the long version of Control music video, the long version of the Rhythm Nation 1814, Miss You Much and Escapade. You should react to her 87 American Music Awards Control performance and 90 American Music Awards Escapade performance. You will love them.
This was a moment for her, since her ''Control'' album was massive in 1986 and 1987. She achieved five top 5 singles with her ''Control'' album, with ''What Have You Done For Me Lately'' (n.4), ''Nasty'' (n.3), ''When I Think of You'' (n.1), ''Control'' (n.5) and the ballad ''Let's Wait Awhile'' (n.2). The last single of the album, ''The Pleasure Principle'' missed unfortunatly the top 10. ''Control'' was a huge moment, the title track was my favorite song of the album, a masterpiece and like all the songs of the album except the last song of the album ''Funny How Times (Not so much fan of this song, i prefer ''Someday is Tonight'' or ''Any Time, Any Place'' at the same vain of this).
This was heavily Prince inspired due to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who was at the time with the Time and Morris Day and was in the band. Janet when she got with them took her to the next level this was the beginning of the rise to her iconic status that she has today
you ask where was i when i first saw this perforemance?i was right here watching this reaction.i noticed the time moves at the end.have you done the grammys prince tribute with the time and bruno mars?
.Prince also wrote this song for Janet but did not take credit for it. Instead Prince gave it to his ex band members Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Prince did it to get back at Michael Jackson for passing him in success after the Thriller album. That's why Prince decided to help Michael's sister. Prince also wrote I Feel For You for Chaka Khan. And he wrote Manic Monday for The Bangles, Glamorous Life for Sheila E, and even wrote a beautiful ballad recorded by country music legend Kenny Rogers called You're My Love. If you don't believe Prince wrote this song What Have You Done For Me Lately, just look up on UA-cam Prince admits he wrote What Have You Done For Me Lately. He sings this song live and in the middle of the song he screams WHO WROTE THIS SONG !!!!
I was glued to my TV watching a true star being born. Good Lord this brings me back.
🔥🔥

Thank you, I was going to clarify that as well. Paula only choreographed " What have you done for me lately " , "Nasty ", and "Control" .

The night I fell in love! 😍 This is basically JANET and The Time #4Corners
🔥

Always love Janet! Growing up at that time, my girls were Madonna, Janet and Whitney always. I love that Janet is finally getting her due!
I’ve been watching your reviews on Janet Jackson. I absolutely love it. Keep ‘em coming. Janet is an absolute Queen 👑
I'm old enough to remember watching this when it first aired😂
I was 18 in 1987, the year I graduated.
I lost my mind when I first saw this performance! She also killed it on the American Music Awards this same awards season. She performed Control and was fantastic. Bonus Diana Ross hosted the ceremony and when introducing Janet referred to her as like a “favorite niece!” 🥲🥲🥲
This was Janet's stands out performance, standing ovation!!!
I thought the tempo was too high from the studio version, not great.
@@michaelasay8587 it was live dude...not a lip sync recording.

You def see the timestamp of The Time😉 all over this performance.
I never noticed how much Janet was ingrained in the Minneapolis sound. Great performance showing that she could stand on Janet not just her last name Jackson.
That was because of her producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who are on stage with her.
YES Queen Janet 🙌

Wow! She BAD! 🤩
I was a club DJ in L.A during those years. Somewhere I've got a picture of us taken in my DJ booth.
I was in the 3rd grade when I first saw the NASTY video and I never looked at girls in school the same way again.
This was a kick ass performance!

noted!
@TheBananaboydc I know and I already saw it. That's why I said the long version that's like a short film. 😎 😉
Gotta do Control by Janet, they killed it in that video as well. Rhythm Nation is also a killer.... 💯
I Think Both of those have been done. I Know for sure "Rhythm Nation" has.

Oh wow!!!!🤯 this
I don’t know if anyone ever told you but
You remind me of
Cherrelle
You should check out her video
You Look Good 2 Me
Because I've reacted to her a couple of her songs I know who she is and nope never heard that its a first 😂 I'll take it
A lot of Prince influence.
Hola Empress! How bout more Karen Carpenter??!
Empress ...I disagree, I think the tempo was too high.
