In the past, almost everybody travelled on the left side of the road because that was the most sensible option for feudal, violent societies. Since most people are right-handed, swordsmen preferred to keep to the left in order to have their right arm nearer to an opponent and their scabbard further from him. Moreover, it reduced the chance of the scabbard (worn on the left) hitting other people.

And if I may add. Driving/riding on the right was instigated by Napoleon in all the lands he conquered perhaps because he was left handed.

Mr Roy if and when you return to England you should drive the A57 Snake Pass, it's basically a 20 mile rally stage surrounded by moorland and forests. Do it at night for maximum fun, oncoming headlights give you plenty of notice so you can use ALL of the road.

For a few hours after watching this I was thoroughly convinced I needed a Morgan 3 wheeler and was going to buy one.... Then I realized what I would look like in it (ridiculous), and how bad roads are here (horrible), and how damn hot it is when its not raining (very hot) especially in traffic. It would still make a great addition, after 3 other cars and a few bikes.

I actually like the T-rex due to its performance. I have a friend in FL. who owns and I drive it every summer when I go down there. The overall performance of the T-Rex is awesome. The original T-Rex was not open roof, though it had an plexiglass/acrylic small window in the front, with no doors. So like a Jeep, but lower to the ground. The Morgan is a bit old school for me. The redesigned T-Rex, which is the Aeros 3S, has a fully enclosed body.

We drive on the left because in medieval times a king passed a law if such to say that you should pass on the left so that the right had, the sword hand, was always ready just in case! In another country the king was left handed so passed the law to pass on the right! This system was adapted by most countries when it came to transport laws apart from Britain etc!! :)

Bunch of bickering at the end is lulzy.
I agree that having signs announcing speed trap zones is optimal. Having the ability to go a bit faster, along with having less people/cars around in the country roads with no stop signs for miles, makes for a great drive.
Us enthusiasts can use our best judgement for the speed at which we decide to drive at, and relax about whether or not we will get caught and get a ticket.

At the start I though, wow an American who has come to England and isn't carrying a mackintosh. Then he says "hopefully, it won't rain". No, it doesn't normally rain here when it's a clear blue sky. You need clouds for rain. I bet he thinks it's always foggy in London and the Hackney carriages are horse drawn.

Great show, but I think the ending argument is causing a stir. I'm surprised so many people agree with Alex, especially considering he's wrong. Should speed traps (cameras) be labeled? Two answers -- If A STATE ADOPTS LEGISLATION ALLOWING THE USE OF SPEED CAMERAS, then yes. But the more important question is do we need speed cameras in the first place? The answer is no. They simply don't work. Again, IF we had cameras, yes they should be labeled, but every motorist should fight to not have them.

Okay..quick history lesson. Most people in the world are right handed; most are also right footed; when putting your left foot in the stirrup, before throwing your right (i.e. dominant) leg over the saddle, are you going to stand in the middle of the road or on the edge of the road?.. You'd stand at the edge, wouldn't you?.. That's why most of the world grew up riding / driving on the left-hand side of the road.. But one contrary, little Frenchman - named Napolean - decided that he wanted his empire to ride on the other side.. Some of us resisted him and his will; others didn't

Pre car, Swords were worn on the left. Pulled out to the right. Passing on the left allowed defense. It stuck. Of course, by the time you chaps were setting up home over there you had the gun which of course you shoot with your right whilst steadying on your left so it would be advantageous to pass on the right.

I think Alex Roy is correct at the end. Knowing is half the battle, but beware cops hide out in the UK too with speed traps - just like the USA. JF I see your points too but in some cars it is fun to drive fast and going above the speed limit to have a more enjoyable driving experience. Of course, I wouldn't advise going above the speed limit and don't do it myself. I think the majority of the motorways in the UK are good too, many more and it'd be to much.

Have to say I drove past stone henge a few years ago and was totally surprised to see it sandwiched between two major roads, I expected it to be on some desolate moor in the middle of nowhere. JF, I'm afraid I don't understand your commentary at the end; you say on the one hand that the UK doesn't have enough motorways and that's a bad thing because it means you can't get around fast enough (I disagree, but never mind), but on the other hand you say that outright speed isn't everything, and you enjoy other aspects of driving. Surely the British B-road delivers that in spades, whereas a motorway does not...?

J.F. - You're wrong about speed cameras not being anywhere but Arizona. Have you ever been around the Washington, DC area? It's littered with speed cameras that just snap your photo as you pass by and send you a ticket in the mail. My wife recently got one for going 63 mph in a 50mph zone - $125 fine. They post "Photo Enforced" under speed limit signs to show that there may be a speed camera. However, many of the roads with the "Photo Enforced" signs don't actually have cameras so it's tricky.
