Got to meet Chris once. it's the only time i've ever got to try another left-handed upright (his EUB).

I have a bass from the 50's, all my life, 30 years of playing it, and It's a constant figt for the balance, of which Chris speaks here. The fight is frustrating, because when my strings are just a little bit to high for me, and the playing endures quite a lot of suffering, my bass has an absolute killer of a sound, ... but my fingers are torn after a gig (we play some klezmer music, and I always give a solid 400% effort:). When the action is lower, the longer sustain is a very valid pro, but the instrument is a lot quieter. With our band we sometimes play acoustic, we rehearse acoustic, so for years I needed to sound big straight out of the gigbag, but as I got older, I got tired... This year I've decided, that I lower the action and I also have bought a Hartke LH500 and a 4x10' cab on wheels :)

Hello! I got my first upright bass yesterday and it came out of the box. The bridge is removable? Do I have to set it up first? I wouldn't want to break or damage my instrument. I just need to know if the upright bassist has to set up and unmount the instrument each time he/she moves the instrument from place to place. I don't find any video on this topic. I'd be glad if you could help me. Thanks a lot!

Just reading this message now, so you have probably figured it out. Go see a bass maker and let them help you set it up properly! Happy Bass Playing!

That bass sounds just about perfect to my ears. It has plenty of character. I didn't quite understand the part about "too much technique" when the strings are lower. Too much growl? I like growl a lot but I guess there is too much of a good thing if the note's distinctness and fullness suffer but you might as well throw in the towel if there ain't no growl. Too boring.

I feel like he refers to the growl of the strings when they are vibrating on the low height, plus perfect fingering means that the character of the instrument might be a little compromised. That's maybe what Chris meant

He meant that when the bass is easy to play, we tend to get carried away with frilly playing

If having a lower string setting reduces your musicality then that’s on you, not on the setup.

This Southpaw is blindingly confusing to me. I gotta move on, this is an alien.
