I had the original 45. Many years ago I heard that the way the band Steam got or took the name was because the band got out late one night and in the early morning. It was cold out side. They were in New York I think and they went outside after recording and saw steam coming up from the man hole covers. Ergo Steam was chosen
Just watched a video of Steam doing this song "LIVE". You left a link in the comments that brought me here. Thanks for the good information. Those guys weren't even trying to make it look real. What a joke! Lancelot Link Secret Chimp's band could have done a more believable performance!
Interesting that the narrator says the instrumentation is “drums, percussion, organ and piano” when one of my favorite parts is the very prominent vibraphone.
The guys in the video had nothing to do with the song itself. They were hired after it was released to portray the band "Steam" and to go on tour as the band that recorded the song. It was a big ruse.
@@tunesman100I'll tell you the truth. In the video the "lead" singer is really cute and HOT and I wanna know where I can find more. Also How did they go on tour if the guys on the cover don't actually sing. Did they lip sync their ass off on stage? LOL I STILL WOULD"VE WATCHED just to see that "lead" singer. MMMMM such a cutie. I could just eat him up.
In 1970 we sang that song in high school at basketball games.
Exactly. The Maryland Terrapins basketball fans incorporated the song into games very soon after the release. The White Sox were late to the table.

Great video!😃
This is such great research and history!! So many late 60s "bands" never really existed. See also, "Ohio Express"...
Phenomenal story behind this iconic one hit wonder. Well done!
I wish that instead of "Steam," they had gone with "Man Hole"!!
Great intel, I love this song! Now I can't get it out of my head - keep posting!
Awesome video

Interesting that you didn’t know a vibraphone is a percussion instrument. Have you been trying to blow it?
Does anyone know who's in the video for the song? I'm curious to know who those guys are. Are any of them actually the people who sang the song?
