Fred Astaire referred to John Bubbles as the greatest dancer of his generation; John actually mentored Astaire and coached him back in the 1930's. Marvelous!
Wow! No Words to describe the Greatness! Wish they were all still here! My mom used to mention the names Buck and Bubbles, and so many stars she used to know about during the 1930's and 1940's. But I was a kid in the 1960's and 1970's, so I had no clue about who she was talking about. She has passed away years ago, so it is simply wonderful to see these vintage videos. I sincerely appreciate it, now that I am getting up in age. So thankful for U-tube!
Wow! You have any stories, or articles on Mr.Bubbles? Have been trying to gather info on him for a possible project. Such an amazing and underrated talent!!
Sorry to be offtopic but does anyone know a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I was dumb lost my login password. I appreciate any help you can give me!
@Angelo Mohammad thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
That was the "Bojangles" number...ostensibly an homage to tap dancer Bill Robinson (who danced with Shirley Temple), but really to Bill Sublette, noted for the percussion style of the heels.
@@MsZoedog66 I think I lost this item (among many) in a hurricane years ago, so I'll have to check. But, I once taped a PBS Gershwin anniversary special, (I believe it last for 2-3 evenings...that is, an episode for each.).When the documentary began to focus on 'Porgy and Bess', the Gershwin Estate allowed the production company to show some of the rarest edits and footage from the rehearsals of the original 1936 production. Of the ragged and flawed footage shown, there was a VERY short clip of Bubbles ( as 'Sportin' Life') practicing a dance routine on stage. I preface the following because, at this point, i wasn't too familiar with Sublett's dancing as I was with his singing -- esp. with his, then partner, Buck. I mention this because, at one point, i thought what I was viewing were the sad remains of footage that was preserved and spliced back together by various editors over the years. At one point during Bubbles' routine, it appears as if-- while one portion of his body were facing in one direction (from waist up), both his hips (and legs) suddenly snap and then rotate the opposite direction. It looks freakish to say the least! But, mind you, I simply wrote this weird visual off as the result of years of edits. Cut to YEARS later. I'm watching Vincent Minnelli's production of, 'Cabin in the Sky' for the first time, (starring Lena Horne, and Eddie Rochester, Ethel Waters and 'Bubbles'.) There's a scene in which Sublett character, ('Domino') sings and dances to an old vaudeville classic, 'Shine'. Needless to say, the entire routine (which includes him dancing up and down a staircase). Here was a revelation for myself regarding this man's extraordinary talent. Within this particular routine, he included the same maneuver from 'Porgy' that I, visually, thought was the result of edits, which was, his entire lower extremity twisting in the opposite direction of his upper torso! I learned that what I had seen years earlier was no edit, but Bubble's actual physically prowess, manipulating his body to achieve this visual effect! It was a stunning routine, and certainly worth the screening! (sorry for the typos and omitted words. Rushing this post before work.)
Best tap dancer who EVER danced.
What an amazing dancer I never heard of before and im 62

That's my great grandmas brother
Brilliant dancer AND great singer, yet so little is known about him. Did he have children?

I just read on IMDb that he had four wives over time. I'm guessing he probably did have kids with one of his wives.
You must be so damn proud! I'm really glad that all the videos of him are preserved.

A time when people had true talent!
Thanks for making this available for our viewing pleasure. One of the greats.
I first saw him in Cabin in the Sky. I never knew how amazing and renown he was.
Diamond stuff .. loved it .. Clarke Peter's BBC show on history of tap got me here. Pure class ..
One of the greatest tap dancers of all time.
Can't beat them old time entertainers.RIP John Bubbles.
I actually found myself watching his "shadow" dancing behind him.
Excellent! Thanks for posting this.
This is wonderful. He is SMOOTH.
Just realized John's 58 years old here - impressive all the way around!
I guess the trick is to just never stop.
he makes it look so easy!
I never heard of him; I had gone looking for "Me and My Shadow," always curious about the oldest recording
The GOAT!
Amazing. Learned about this star only from reading NYT story about Ayodele Casel!
I love it
Those double-shuffles at 3:08 . . . there was a time I could do those all night. Couldn't do one now if my life depended on it.
Every time I see this my feet start to dance
Love it!!
Mr. Bubbles is the dancer that Fred Astaire patterned his signature 'hat and cane' routine after.

There is footage of him in 1937 and he is FAST as well as being good. Here he is more refined. He was particular dynamite as a younger man! 💗

I know it's 1960 but still it would have been nice to see at least ONE BROWN SKINNED person.
I know, it was really telling when they panned the camera through the audience and they were all attractive white people lol.
He was showing out, I would have been clapping all the way through.
Wow!
yessssss
I just want to grab my shoes to do this stuff.
read a review of his new bio called Sportin' Life in the Washington Post. plan to check it out
The Post article is what brought me to this UA-cam.
Amazing Thank You 💕 UA-cam
