There are a lot of factors involved in a simple, unsurprising conclusion: you have to be born into a wealthy family of artists and intellectuals, capitalize on your parents' success at an early age and have a bit of luck. No shit. Of course, I understand that this test is intended to evaluate the initial conditions of access to an artist's success, with the idea of having an ideal career, but it's super depressing because it's totally socially deterministic.
When it comes to luck, I'm a big fan of the Seneca quote "Luck Is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity." There's a lot of things beyond your control but you can prepare for potential opportunities well in advance.
Absolutely! All too often, there is this misconception that pursuing a career as an artist is like playing the lottery. First, your odds are a lot better as studies have shown that 1 in 6 artists is making $25K or more. Further, there are so many things we can do to have a great chance that we are that one in six. Don't hide behind these misconceptions that are based on nothing but frustration or envy. Don't use them as an alibi for not succeeding or, worse, for not trying.
@@contemporaryartissue I've been consuming mountains of tutorials and intend to buy supplies once I move into my new apartment on Friday. I have absolutely no shortage of ideas so frankly I like my odds.
My score is high. But I’ve got about 10-15 years of life left to paint before I die. I’m not wasting it dealing with the artificial art world of galleristas and art dealers fickle politics. It’s way too much of a bring down. I’ve had enough shows in enough countries and got my MFA blah blah and let’s face it, it’s kind of a scam. Nobody is gonna pick a 75 year old straight white lady and give her a show at Zwirner or Gagosian. I don’t have the social connections or the social skills and quite frankly, I’m not prepared to invest my time. I’m in my Goya Black Period (Not deaf though) and just want to paint. All else is frivolous. Life is good. Back to work.
Keep doing what you enjoy the most-that is the most important thing in the first place. Simultanously, carer-wise, I believe the most important things are the work itself, making sure you have a professional profile (website, cv, portfolio, bio), and applying some career strategies (networking via Instagram, art opportunities and networking in real life). You can focus on the work, while also creating a window of opportunity for career success.
The only area I shine in is time spent 80+ hours a week (live/work space). My thoughts are focused on uninterrupted work through solitude, thinking and application. My business model is “build it and they will come”. If it doesn’t I have lived my life with purpose and spent my time well. I have incorporated into my thoughts “time spent working brings money”. I may not make millions but a living wage would do😎Thank you for your advice being “one thing leads to another”. I am building on that!

I have a unique situation a wealthy sponsor who appreciates me and likes my art.efforts. Yes there are special people who care art and those committed to making it. He cuts me slack on certain expenditures. It’s a residency of sorts, I fill in the bulk but as you know everything is expensive and every little bit helps. Been here 25 years. Used to do sous chef work for Hilton hotel corp. and Stanford university. Cooked my way through art school. When I did my independent study in Portugal I worked at a bakery there. Anyway I leave the women alone now keep to studio. No more of that female money drama. I make art 24 and 7. I know what it takes to make art and get in (came close real close but no money to follow through). Most of us out here won’t make it. What can we do? It’s what we love. That’s why what your doing is so important. It gives us hope a way for a chance, that’s all we ask for all of us out here. Stay solid plant your feet cuz we’re following you now. All best to you man. Absolutely not-there are numerous examples and ways to enter the art world that started without wealth and without connections. Don't use these misconceptions that are based on nothing but frustration, generalization, and envy as an alibi for not trying or not doing everything you CAN do to improve your chances for success. I started late in my career and I am still glad to this day that I did. I agree with networking. You will find the right people.
Definitely embrace who you are. Some things we cannot change, and that is fine. There are numerous other factors we can control to optimize our chances of success. Go for it! 💪
I agree to all of this. I know I can get these information to books, experiences and people in the artworld. I know it will take me time and funds for it so this is really valuable for me. This is what I want to know before I take fine arts in college.

Great content. I just need to get into a city with a decent art scene. Orlando Florida sucks, but I am close to Miami. A great idea for your show, perhaps you could start doing a ‘art city” series and highlight different cities (in detail). Like one episode could highlight the LA scene and any galleries, shows, collectors …then another episode could highlight Miami…(art basil…local galleries, famous collectors) …..then London, Berlin, Paris.
Sounds like a great idea indeed! I am based in Europe so I am a lot more familiar with the European art cities, but it could be interesting to collaborate with some other artists who are residing in those cities and can give us the inside information from first hand experience. Food for thought, thanks!

as always great great! I follow every step of your guidance and have seen many successes in my career since knowing your channel! By introducing artena I have won many art residencies, and by your city of art video I am going to leave Turin for London to experience there and Then I go to Toronto! but still, I do know how to be in contact and present my work at this stage to a medium gallery! because Artenda is more just an opportunity of art residency than the exhibitions, exhibitions that Artendasuggest I even participate are groups! so can you make a video or guide after art residencies and other local places of exhibitions that you previously suggested how artists go to the next level, I should now think about finding a gallery or again continue art residency experience ? and yet I am very very eager to see a video from you about the sketches of the project description! video of artenda was very general and not very detailed about sketching of art project! No. But if you are an artist who wants to have a professional career as an artist, than you might consider these 'careerist' actions & advice
Some people s comments are complaining but I think theyre forgetting that your advise is in specifically having a career as an artist. The complaining and critiques are comming from the perspective of just being an artist and making work minus the career part which involves so much more than just making the work. Its difficult, annoying, fake, frivolous, hard yes but also it is actually the components of what it takes ot have a career as a professional, relevamt artist. The comments prove it as they are expressing the giving up of the career for not being able or willing to do the other stuff. Im not saying that is bad. I am describing from recognition.

I am 63 and feel I'm finally catching my stride with my work for the most part so, is it just too late for me to get noticed in the art world and get a gallery representation?
Absolutely not. Age is a factor, but so is the quality of your work, your network, and your ambition. I am convinced these three are all superior to age, so go for it!

I wish more people were connected to and understood the value and intelligence behind art. So that you could actually deal with collectors on a more intimate level. Because art has become such a commodity and an elitist sport. Your pimp. The galleries have way too much power. Over the years going in and out of the art world exhibiting. I had more horrific experiences, dealing with galleries and museums in regards to work being damaged, stolen and worse. Versus professional experiences. And the majority of these experiences were done with contracts, and I still was leftdefenseless. This made me drop out of the game. A combination of disinterest from enough of the public. And the mistreatment from the so-called professionals that were supposed to be representing me. The world of art is an abusive hideous environment.

The way I see it - this particular art world runs itself on an ethos of exclusivity. 99.99% of artists will never even get close to being in it. If your goal is to make money from your art, most artists will need to think of other means.

@@contemporaryartissue thank you for your reply! I really appreciate it. I should have been clearer. What I mean by 99.99% is that the vast majority of artists won’t get exhibited in the top galleries. The highest level in the art world - the biggest players - are a very very small handful of people. I’m not saying someone can’t make a living as an artist, I know it is possible, but I doubt they can do it by aiming to be at the very top.
I’m skeptical that the contemporary art world (the top tier) is the way to go for most people, hence why I say you have to think of other means (selling prints, growing on social media, a variety of income streams). With AI interrupting this whole space, we need to think carefully more than ever.

I find you a bit contradictory in your statement about "great art will prevail". What makes art great? Something that is in demand or something in which an artist has expressed their heart in? I know this video is career-based, but advising to create something that is in demand rather than what lies will ultimately crush the whole purpose of art.

Art is always a reflection of its time, and when times change, the art world changes with them, not the other way around. Please have a deeper look into our book.
Art shouldn't be for sale in the first place. How about that? The existence of this whole "art system" is wrong.
Unfortunately, we are describing the reality of the art world and not wishful thinking. There are many things in this world that I and many others don't like. But we still can't change them.

Age, race, income level means nothing, especially in this day and age of technology. Be amazing, be different, stand out and put it out there, WORK, have a large body of work. Show your work. Market your work (on IG, other socials) connect with others, go to galleries, absorb how the business works. Again, do the work, and a lot of it. Be passionate, not fickle. Find and then curate your unique voice. This takes TIME and commitment. If you can do all this, my belief is: Success will come. There are many, many roads to success, find one.
I am always happy to learn that there are people with a positive attitude in this world. But I would also like to say that three lines of your youtube comment cannot replace all the other things and experiences that we have tried to write down in our book "Everything for Art".
It’s interesting how sexual orientation and race impacts your artist career. Can you please explain more why?
When awarding exhibitions, art prizes, residencies, etc., preference is currently given to people who are non-white, non-heterosexual, etc. The whole thing roughly corresponds to the spirit of "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)". However, there is no legal basis for this, the juries award funding more according to the spirit of left-wing sentiments and woke attitudes, which one must display in the art world, even if it does not correspond to one's own convictions. Everyone may have their own personal opinion on this political stance. In any case, it is sometimes difficult for straight young male artists to understand why they have been rejected, which can be very frustrating. The irony of the story is that such decisions are very often made by juries of rich, old, straight white men who want to chase the zeitgeist.
In the art world, it is therefore not necessarily about your own art work, but also about who you are and where you come from.
Here is another illustrative personal story: an artist friend of mine dared to experiment, he applied for artist funding from a foundation, filled out everything properly and was rejected. A short time later, he applied under a false identity as a woman, submitted the documents sloppily - and was accepted.
Another viewpoint is sometimes coming from a different background or experience can add value to the art. Not being made by the same white men making the same paintings to be shown to more white men. Curators know fresh and new ideas are interesting to the public and that the art world is not appealing to large parts of our society who can't relate. When having queer exhibitions, the openings can have such a heightened and exciting energy, people come to the gallery who have never come before and new dialogues happen which inspire all artists (including white men). It's good to experiment with different ideas coming together in different combinations.
Also a very important factor to remember which I haven't seen anyone mention. Usually if you are gay or not white and score highly on that factor - you will score lower on a lot of the other factors: struggles with family connections, struggles with money, struggles with luck, struggles with contacts etc.
But yes these things can be annoying with trends. For example, if you are queer perhaps you feel you have to cater to a false preconception of being a queer artist. You and your work has to "look queer". You can't just be yourself because there is an expectation.

Hmm... so you have to be able to pass the catwalk screening test to be an known artist? How dumb.lol If you have that many limits your going to have a hard time finding unique artist with no flow plus only the same programmed things we have already seen before. Well at least you’re a MAN. An older white woman is the absolute worst. And I’m not even gay or thin. You could go to the best art school in the world, but if you don’t have the right connections, it’s hopeless no matter how much talent you have or how many hours you paint a day.
So just paint every single day and let go of all expectations. Theres millions of artists in this world and only a handful of collectors. We are lucky to experience the joy of creation.
@@war-painter You understand it and so too the elites. The difference is they won’t change a policy they disagree with in principle. As artist we must accept the things the system stands on. We must learn them and be in harmony with them. As artist we must always question, upon what things are my thoughts premised on. I was recently asked to consider; how time spent making art leads to experience and a kind of knowledge. That these things can be capitalized on. My premise that art time had no connection to money was flawed. Art time has monetary rewards proportionate to art market principles. CAI then is attempting to help me understand those principles. To parlay personal disappointments into harsh reasons that support them, can not be reasonable. The only reasonable course is to embrace a plan that “pragmatically informs” and follow it. I am certain however far along one gets dispute perceived disappointment’s. You I and this other person who posted will be in a better place then we are now. One thing leads to another. I am a person of color and may or may not get to the house on the hill. If I don’t that triplex top floor 2 bedroom in the foot hills beats the flop house at lands end.😎👍 All best hope you guys are still here in future and the better for it.

To say that you are pretty well on the scrap heap if you haven’t had a breakthrough by 35 years old, is one of the most ridiculous statements I’ve ever heard. I can’t believe someone with that opinion has written a whole book on becoming a professional artist.
That comment alone has made the whole book, the person who wrote it, and anyone else who agrees with it, look stupid.. and in turn makes every other point or piece of advice on the book not worth listening to.
