Betty Hutton completely stole the scene! She' s perfect for this role. She made it HER picture! A formidable comedienne, singer, dancer and looked pretty as well.
I was lucky enough to meet her and her sister in Massachusetts in late seventies. She belted out this number and others. She could swear a mean streak until my mother reminded her of my presence. She also got her sister to sing I’ve got a girl from Kalamazoo, her signature song. Meeting her was mind blowing for me and my mother. What a joy!!!!❤😊😅😂

I am a young kid, but I grew up with Annie Get Your Gun and all of the songs that came with it! My parents even convinced me to sing this for the 3rd-grade talent show. It was such a blast and this is one of my favorite scenes!
I've loved Betty Hutton for years, but the part was originally due to be played by Judy Garland, I don't think even Judy could've topped Betty in this show!
I know im randomly asking but does someone know of a method to get back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly forgot the account password. I would love any tips you can give me!
Judy Garland was the original choice to play Annie Oakley, but I believe Betty Hutton was far more suited to it and did a wonderful job. My cousin Betty always reminded me of Betty Hutton. Whilst staying at the Norfolk Royale Hotel in Bournemouth I had afternoon tea with Howard Keel, an extremely nice and courteous gentleman. The part of Buffalo Bill was played by the late Ted Hockridge in a London production that starred Suzi Quattro as Annie. At one time a friend owned the solid silver plated saddle that was presented to Buffalo Bill when he brought his Wild West Show to London. My second wife hated the song No Business Like.... so I would sing it at every opportunity!

Transvestigated? Jeepers Creepers. My heart breaks that there are people like that. Thank you for all you gave to us Betty Hutton. We continue to enjoy it to this day. You were a full blooded talent and gorgeous. You were a smart, generous, courageous lady who led from her heart.
Betty Hutton is the best Annie Oakley ever! I own the 1950 MGM classic movie Annie Get Your Gun on videotape, Laser Disc, DVD and Blue Ray. I was born in 1978. Thank you for posting and sharing this movie magic! I love it!
Betty was perfect for this part. Judy had issues going on and wasn't fit to do the part. Betty said the mgm cast and crew were not kind to her. Robert said it didn't show on film, she said you can't let it. She wanted the part so bad but it was a bad experience for her. Nobody today has the kind of energy she had back then. I think she was great.
Judy had issues going on yes, one of the main reasons was that Frank Morgan, a very good friend of hers -- and the man who played the Wizard in the Wizard of Oz (and Dr. Marvel in the first part) became very ill during filming. He died of a heart attack and was replaced half way through the film. He can be seen as the cowboy with the grey hair in the song number. I believe this was one of the scenes that was filmed with Judy Garland but not shown in the complete version of course.
Betty Hutton was the greatest. She should have been surrounded by people not only supporting her when doing this but applause, throughout. Absolutely incredible performance
It was done on TV in black and white starring Mary Martin and John Raitt. I saw it on UA-cam. Of course it couldn’t compare to the movie or the stage production. BTW Mary Martin said that she liked the role but it belonged to Ethel.
That's Louis Calhern who replaced Frank Morgan (a.k.a. Professor Marvel from "The Wizard of Oz" fame) after Frank suddenly died of a heart attack just AFTER they filmed the entire opening scene. They edited the film, but there is a brief shot of Frank in the role of Colonel Buffalo Bill BEFORE they start singing!
It breaks my heart to see this masterpiece of Hollywood hoopla ...... and fast forward to today, with endless remakes of comic books and what not ...... Hollywood was once synonymous with AMERICA, and today, for a whole host of reasons, well - like i said, it breaks my heart
broadwayFan28 He was 6-3, so 6-4 in cowboy boots. Keenan Wynn was 5-10 and Betty Hutton was 5-4, so he definitely towered over them. Louis Calhern (Buffalo Bill) was about as tall as Keel, so it might have been the angle they shot this number.

I've seen Howard Keel's twin, in Ontario Canada, my mouth dropped but was scared to ask him if anyone ever told him. I presumed they had so I could just stare at him. Actually I've seen him twice in the same town.
Judy Garland was originally due to play Annie Oakley before the part went to the delightful Betty Hutton. In a more recent London production of Annie Get Your Gun the part of Annie was played by Suzi Quattro, while the part of Buffalo Bill was played by Canadian baritone, the late Edmund Hockridge (my favourite singer).

Betty Hutton complained of how mean everybody was to her at MGM. According to Gerold Frank's Judy Garland biography, Judy visited the set and called Betty a GD SOB. Betty should have said, "For Chrissakes, Judy, grow up. It's not my fault you got sick; someone had to do this friggin' movie. And if it makes you feel better, all anyone's said to me is 'We don't want you, we want Judy', so tell them to give you the part back and I'll be happy to bow out." This was Hutton's best film work anyway.
What I notice is, whenever the three men sing together without Annie, the voices are dubbed. Except Keel, of course. But there’s no way the other two are producing those precise and melodious harmonies near the end of the number. The collective sound is in no way similar to the solo sound.
ALL musical movies have the vocal rerecorded post-filming. The actors have to lip sync to their filmed image. It's impossible to capture good vocals on set with only distant boom mics. As to whether the on screen actors are the ones actually singing in the post recording, that's harder to know. Audrey Hepburn was famously overdubbed in My Fair Lady and it's very possible better singers were used here. Except Howard Keel.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. That said - I can only listen, as it feels really uncomfortable to watch what is essentially a vulnerable young girl/woman being physically manhandled by three men in her personal space.
She didn't seem to mind and they didn't touch her inappropriately. Also truth be told they mostly treated her as they would a young boy (except for a few moments were they treat her as a lady). Quit projecting your own views on a classic musical scene from the '50s.
