  • This brief retrospective of Jimmie Browne of Winnetka, Ill., is a look at the beginnings of this adopted son of elderly parents. He went on to ferry bombers to England just before WWII broke out, then signed up with the China National Aviation Corp. to bring supplies across "the Hump" of the Himalayas to war-torn China.
The Jianchuan Museum complex just west of Chengdu, provincial capital of Sichuan province, holds China's largest private collection of artifacts amassed during the last 60-70 years, including a major theme organized around the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945).
A large open courtyard hosts 40 bronze busts representing "Chivalrous Friends of China", who came from different countries to assist in their fight against Japanese aggression during WWII.
The bronze statue of CNAC pilot James "Jimmie" Browne is proudly displayed there, alongside 39 other brave souls, many of whom like Jimmy, gave their lives in the resistance against Japanese fascism.
The book, "The Hunt for Jimmie Browne" by Bob Willett, chronicles his efforts to overcome on-going bureaucratic roadblocks to excavate the crash site, and hopefully bring Jimmie Browne home.
