Boss!
RICK
Yeah?
SAM
Boss, ain't you going to bed?
RICK
Not right now.
SAM
Ain't you planning on going to bed in the near future?
RICK
No.
SAM
You ever going to bed?
RICK
No.
SAM
Well, I ain't sleepy either.
RICK
Good. Then have a drink.
SAM
No. Not me, boss.
RICK
Then don't have a drink.
SAM
Boss, let's get out of here.
RICK
No, sir. I'm waiting for a lady.
SAM
Please, boss, let's go. Ain't nothing but trouble for you here.
RICK
She's coming back. I know she's coming back.
SAM
We'll take the car and drive all night. We'll get drunk. We'll go fishing and stay away
until she's gone.
RICK
Shut up and go home, will you?
SAM
No, sir. I'm staying right here.
RICK
They grab Ugarte and she walks in. Well, that's the way it goes. One in, one out. Sam?
SAM
Yeah, boss?
RICK
Sam, if it's December 1941 in Casablanca, what time is it in New York?
SAM
Uh, my watch stopped.
RICK
I bet they're asleep in New York. I'll bet they're asleep all over America.
RICK
Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.
RICK
What's that you're playing?
SAM
Just a little something of my own.
RICK
Well, stop it. You know what I want to hear.
SAM
No, I don't.
RICK
You played it for her and you can play it for me.
SAM
Well, I don't think I can remember it.
RICK
If she can stand it, I can. Play it!
SAM
Yes, boss.
There are so very few movies that are so well acted that they become timeless this is one of them
Amazing...nothing more needs to be said!!¡!!!!!!!
Anybody with a friend like Sam is a lucky man.
I like that plan.
"We'll take a car and drive all night, we'll get drunk, we'll go fishing, and stay away until she's gone."
In a movie so full of great lines, this scene has the greatest.
1:30 “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world...she walks into mine.” 🤦♀️
Part of the reason why Bogart was so believable on screen is because he incorporated his addiction to cigarettes in his movies. It made his acting seem so effortless. It finally killed him at age 57 or 58 but he lives forever on the silver screen.
Well that maybe but during that period he developed a character through Maltese Falcon of a cynical and anti hero one and none portrayed it better than the late Great Bogie
Such intensity in his eyes, oh my.
Anyone talked about Sam’s loyalty? There was a time when loyalty was a sexy human quality before all the professionalism and self centeredness came into existence
Loyalty is about love and honour not about sexiness
@@sampuatisamuel9785 but true loyalty is a sext quality for sure
I would argue that loyalty is one of the key characteristics of professionalism. Sadly, professionalism is not longer valued.
Love the cinematography lighting effect. I realised that light plays an important role. Look at Bogart's face. Half in light and half in darkness. It shows the internal struggle of a decision. You will find many scenes like that which shows Bogart's face half illuminated. Whereas Ilsa' s face mostly fully illuminated.
I feel the whole movie has a deeper meaning. Rick represents America. America has not yet entered the war.
Ilsa' husband is from czechoslavakia where Germany invaded. The French guy represents France whom the German invaded. Rick that is America finally enters the war in support of the French where you can see at the end scene Rick tells the French guy " it is the beginning of a beautiful friendship". One of the greatest movies ever made. Notice in this scene where he is drowning his sorrows he ask Sam a question. December 1941 he mentions what time is it in New York? December 1941 was the attack on Pearl harbour. If you scrutinize each scene it is mind blowing
By far the best acting scene ever done!
This is what the pain of lost love looks like.
For me, it's been 37 years. Some pain never goes away
@@GermanShepherd1983 Right y r, me too, 😞
@@GermanShepherd1983 It goes to all of us
Only someone who has actually felt that heartache can portray it so well.
Very true
Shadows, lighting, black and white film. Set the mood.
And as time goes by so that tune lives on and on into legend.
"No, Sir. I'm waiting for a Lady."
I agree with jazzandmint. Best movie scene ever. The raw emotion in HB's voice almost makes me cry.
Think about what a badass Sam must have looked like in 1942 here. Like everything going on in the world and he sees rick and thinks “this guy is my friend and he needs me”
everytime is a brand new movie to me....still feels his ache in MY heart every single time. Why am I still watching this ?? ....
just watched it twice.
Anyone knows if there is other movie making subtle reference to Peal Harbour besides this one...? YES, THEY WERE ALL SLEEPING IN NEW YORK.
Someone did SLEEP on his shift in Hawaii that morning!!
Beautiful timeless life repeats itself forever
Casablanca muss man gesehen haben. Großes Kino! 👍👍👍👍👍👍❤
It’s very uncomfortable to sit and watch Rick implode, I guess that’s because I’ve been there myself
Love movies are not my favourite but this one sure is. It is one of the greatest movies ever made. I always remember the sigh Bogarte makes at 2:19. It says more than could a thousand words. It is so poignant, he should have won an Academy just for it.
2:19 it's add so much emotions.
Just worked out that while Rick is talking, Sam is playing a variation on "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man of Mine" from Showboat.
Well spotted . ! The incidental music all through the movie is
terrific . Esp : Parlez moi d'amour
when Victor and Ilse enter Ricks .
Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.
I fricken know how this dude feels
Play it! One of my favourite movies.
Of all the ginjoints inalll rhe bars inall rheworld she walks into mine
AHHH THERE'S NOTHING BETTER THAN A CHEEKY CIG AND A DRINK AFTER ONE OF THEM LONG DAYS AND HUMPHREY SURE KNOWS HOW TO CAPTURE THAT FEELING!
does anyone know the name of the tune Sam is playing just before he starts playing As time goes by?
Great scene (out of a LOT of them in that movie).
Change 'gin joints' to 'bars' and that line is still fantastic and relevant today.
I haven't smoked for many years - but I actually liked watching him smoke, not sure why. But since I found out it killed him (esophageal cancer), it now irks me to watch him smoke.
Thanks for posting this great scene.
Play it!!!!
Wa-Hoooo !!!! GREAT !! Thanks for the post ....
i`am as tortured as rick, about my loss love !!!! but we will always have "atlanta" !
cancer took him away so soon, there should have been more films.
I Luv this movie
