  • “The biggest sanction that one can imagine would be understanding that it was a very good journey and it didn’t end the way that people wanted” - Gabrielius Landsbergis, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania warns Georgian authorities not to let the country derail from its European path with a possible final enaction of “Agents Law” in coming couple of weeks.
Landsbergis says that the Georgian Dream ruling party representatives tried to argue why the law is needed, why transparency is needed while meeting in Tbilisi with the delegation of Foreign Ministers consisting from representatives of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Island on May 15th. “Nobody doubts the transparency is needed. I don’t think there are a lot of people in Georgia who would go against transparency. The problem is that this notion, it’s not about that” - Foreign Minister Landsbergis adds.
Foreign Ministers met with President Salome Zourabichwili, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Parliament Speaker Salva Papuashvili, also opposition and the civil society representatives. The Ministers have personally brought their clear signal to Tbilisi about a possible enaction of Agents Law - one which the Lithuanian Foreign Minister describes as “a betrayal of Georgian people’s interest”.
Gabrielius Landsbergis talked about a further task of the team of the four: ““First of all we have to be very clear to our European partners and Georgian society has also to amplify this message to what really this law is about. Calling it a Russian Law is a catchy thing. There is a logic behind because it’s actually looks like a law that is being written in Moscow. But explaining really at verbatim what it means, what will happen if this law comes in place, what will happen before the election, what will happen to NGOs - This is what needs to be amplified. We will relay this message the way that we understand”.
In his interview with the RFE/RL’s Nino Gelashvili Gabrielius Landsbergis also shares his reflections on Bidzina Ivanishvili’s public speech made on April 29th: “When I heard Mr. Ivanishvili’s speech it was one of the most heartbreaking moments when it comes to the way that I perceive Georgia. It really pained to listen. I set down and started writing what became then a tweet. It was like writing a letter to a friend who is doing something that might be irreversible and you would like it to stop and not do it. Because if it crosses the line, the coming back might be extremely difficult. We worked so hard with the previous Government, with current Government to help you every step on the way to get you to where you are currently and to lose it all it’s beyond the heartbreak”.
