Happy Whale - Identifying Whales for Fun and Science

Learn how your photos can contribute to science! Join researcher Martin van Aswegen as he walks us through “Happy Whale,” an online database that identifies and tracks whales using state of the art image processing algorithms. Humpback whales can be identified by the unique markings and trailing edge on their tail flukes. Happywhale.com allows users to upload photos of whale flukes which are then matched to existing images in the system, effectively identifying individuals and tracking their movement. The site makes global whale tracking more efficient than ever, giving scientists access to large amount of data.
