      I sorted through 15000 emails and got it down to about 5. I just deleted the hundreds of thousands of spam emails. I have now switched email accounts and it was easy to move them across and literally count them to make sure they all transferred

      So clever. Instead of having countless bullshit mails in your inbox, you just put them in multiple (sub)folders... problem not solved, but it looks much nicer and can be sold to countless idiots in (self)management seminars.

      I get what you mean, as it is super ironic, but I feel like he _does_ need it, in a sense. With large projects when he shoots 4K (as he explained with the Tokyo Project), he needs the storage space (albeit temporarily).

    • @HOFFERN342

      Hugo Santos Would mean he needs to pay for an external HD/SSD though, and also carry that with him every time he goes somewhere and decides to shoot on a different location. Makes a mess on his workspace as well. He would need to connect that, AND the camera, at the same time etc. etc.

    • @ZeranZeran
      @ZeranZeran 6 років тому +20

      The TV is on to showcase his bedroom and it looks nice in the background.
      Also, 830GB is incredibly easy to go through. Especially if you're working with ANY kind of Audio, Video, or Photo editing. It sucks. This video actually helped me out a lot. Time to take advantage of Google Drive.

    You can still be a minimalist by backing up your photos. It's never recommended to just back up your photos to the cloud. Solely trusting an external company with your files might prove to be risky, just a thought.

      Ubooya yeah, for me if it doesn’t exist in three places (local, online, offsite) it doesn’t exist. I admire your minimalism but it looks like you’d be dead in the water if you lost WiFi

  • @jschlatt

    This is the exact opposite of the way I do things. I'm a fan of keeping a clean workspace, for sure, but deleting stuff just for the sake of not having it? Hosting everything you've done exclusively on platforms that compress it? Not using paid cloud storage because it costs money--but then buying a 1TB SSD Macbook Pro? Color me confused. I think what you're doing here is cool, but damn we are worlds apart.

    • @paveladamek3502

      That confuses me a bit as well... a YT broadcaster with this kind of equipment and a high-end studio microphone could very well add a paid cloud service to his IT portfolio. That being said, I am a big fan of his.

      Buy an external hard-drive.

    • @aconite72
      @aconite72 4 роки тому

      @XOX Yeah BR discs are generally more dependable than hard drives, but they aren't flexible and most laptops nowadays don't have a drive, so you'd have to buy a separate reader. Since travel video creator needs mobility most, dragging around a CD drive and boat-load of CDs aren't ideal. I'd say get an SSD, since they're far more reliable than HDDs.

      Daniel Streltsov if you own a 16gig version of an iPhone with the latest iOS you are basically forced to live in minimalism!
      I only have a single page of apps and a folder containing “offloaded” apps. Apps that can be accessed alternatively are also stacked in that folder like Contacts/Facetime (you can easily reach these two apps just from the phone app), apps that you can reach from control center by jus swiping up also go in there (camera, calculator, alarms)
      If you are using google drive, you can upload pictures to the cloud and delete them on a regular basis. Only keep what you need and “offload” apps you are not using but desire to keep.

      Larissa Veloso If you are using an iOS device what you can do is put all your apps onto one folder including all the social and entertainment apps and just keep the basic apps aside like Clock, Phone, Calendar etc.
      Anytime you want to quick access your apps just scroll down on the home screen and search what you want to Apple does a very job with this search function you can even search your files on this

    So you put all of your most precious raw photo, movie etc. data onto private third party servers of whose security you do not know anything of; who can be accessed by all the nice American intelligent agencies? Interesting. Other suggestion: buy a raspberry & a hard drive, install a suitable linux and a NextCloud instance. Grants you even more options, but everything stays under your control (and is faster).
    Btw: Application Folder is Shift-Cmd-A in Finder. No need for it in a minimalistic sidebar, as all the apps are faster to access via spotlight than from the dock.

    so... I kinda hate you right now, a little bit, but it will pass... ;-P
    never heard someone not keeping any raw files, that's intense, and I totally envy the feeling of clarity (hope my unprobable english is understandable) that I can imagine having from getting rid of all those... that's my main attraction to minimalism, because I can clearly feel the confusion I get from being surrounded with unnecessary stuff..
    I still think it's interesting to see how that can relate (inside of me) with having to deal with life's innate complexity and chaos.. don't know if you sense a link between this and that ?
    great inspiration anyway, as usual !

    Some of your advice here is pretty bad and would probably only apply to Amateurs. For example not backing up your raw files and just keeping your finished video files. What if a client comes back with changes and you have to add in footage you haven't used already.

    LOVE IT! I live really minimalist myself and also digital wise but you are next level! Why do you position your docks left? Does this have any advantage or just a preference you like?

    • @realw1ll
      @realw1ll 6 років тому +7

      Vegains I keep the dock in the left because screens have less real estate vertically than horizontally so putting it on the bottom cuts off even more pixels so putting it on the left gives you more space to scroll on web pages, etc

    • @laurikvo
      @laurikvo 6 років тому

      Personally I do the same and the reasons for me are that the MacOS app managing buttons and most important menus are on the (top) left side such as closing and changing programs to full screen. Feels more convenient. Also if you want to drag and drop something into other screens it's not possible if the dock is on the right side. Would love to hear Kraig's reasons behind it too.

    • @drewhorning8646
      @drewhorning8646 6 років тому

      You get more screen real-estate.

    •  6 років тому +1

      I understand people are saying for more screen real-estate, but isn't that the point of hiding the dock? What makes the difference between hiding it on the bottom and on the left. I ask because I hide it on the left and use full screen, which solves the screen real-estate problem.

      Teja Karlapudi OSX and Windows are so similar that you can basically apply all of the steps here if you are a non mac user. Libraries, google drive, etc. Are available in windows. For video, you have a better premier pro for windows. So get past your OS racism. All computers matter.

    I think, to be really minimal, you have to be running Linux with a window manager like the i3. I don't see anything minimal in a macOS.

      I agree, I thought about linux on just a wm like i3 immediately! You can do stuff super fast with just commands.
      One could dual boot to use mostly linux with i3 for regular computing and OSX for just video editing, but I don’t think a hardcore minimalist would appreciate having two OS on his laptop as it might feel cumbersome...

    • @XDTuber
      @XDTuber 6 років тому +1

      I just looked up i3. So it seems like vim for controlling windows. If so it would be pretty useful because then you don't have to use the mouse and only keyboard shortcuts

      That's exactly what I am thinking, also good to use a minimal GNU/Linux distro like Void, Arch, or Parabola, Debian minimal, and Gentoo (use a minimal tarball) and its a good idea to use suckless software with it.

    • @HipposHateWater
      @HipposHateWater 6 років тому +1

      I can't think of any OS more complicated than pretty much any Linux distro, which is the complete opposite of minimalism.
      (Especially when something goes wrong and you need to spend 5 hours figuring out how to tweak some obscure kernel somewhere, which is something even "simple" distros like Ubuntu suffer from.)
