Hi would the usb socket be live all the time or does it turn off when the car has been lock? just wondering if it would drain the battery if it was on all the time.
No, not in this particular model of the Yaris. So it doesn't drain the battery. It only activates when the car is switched on. If anyone needs to have this feature you'd need to wire it to the fusebox.
Removing plastic pillar cover to hide the wire is a bad idea. The air bag is located there and you can be traumatized or even worse.Espesialy, in older cars ,like your 2012.
I followed this instruction to fit cam on my Yaris. Very helpfull. Thanks a lot.

Which year is your Yaris ?
This was 2012 (62)
That usb is not working for me.. 2014 model
It's a possibility you camera requires more amperage than your USB port can supply. In such case you have to use a car charger or hard wiring adapter

There are already wiring running behind the pillar. The wire I have ran is attached to them, safe and out of the way of the airbag
