Watch me watch this classic 1958 horror movie, Vertigo, in this first time watching reaction video! Vertigo tells the story of a former police detective who is asked to help out an old friend whose wife is acting suspiciously. He struggles with his personal demons and becomes obsessed with a beautiful woman.
The film was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and was based on the novel "D'Entre Les Morts" by Pierre Boileau. Vertigo stars James Stewart as John 'Scottie' Ferguson, Kim Novak as Madeleine Elster / Judy Barton, Barbara Bel Geddes as Marjorie 'Midge' Wood, Tom Helmore as Gavin Elster, Henry Jones as Coroner, Raymond Bailey as Scottie's Doctor and Ellen Corby as Manager of McKittrick Hotel.

Check out this first time watching horror reaction video for Vertigo and see if I can make it as a horror movie rookie. Horror is a genre I've barely explored, mostly because I'm a huge wuss. Typically my Halloween movie viewings consist of Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. This year I decided to expand my horror movie knowledge and try and watch these horror movie fan favourites.

'Vertigo' is easily in my top 10 movies of all time. Hitchcock is the master of suspense. He uses unique angles and shots, mixes murder and everyday common events together. This movie was filmed in color and restored to it's full beauty, as if it was shot yesterday, the music sets the mood throughout. I believe it's a story of obsession, and it's also a beautiful tour of San Francisco. Kim Novak is always beautiful in her movies.

Brian De Palma made a tribute to Vertigo, with the film "Obsession" (1976), which also Bernard Herrmann wrote the score for. And Mel Brooks made a satirical tribute to Vertigo (and Alfred Hitchcock's films in general) with his film "High Anxiety".

Nobody in this movie ever believed Madeline was actually possessed except, hypothetically, Madeline. What her "husband" suggested and Scotty believed was that Madeline believed it as some kind of a delusion. By the way, "North by Northwest," a film Hitchcock made the following year, is really good.

Talking about age differences: My mother's first husband was also quite a lot older than her.
They fell for each other and started a relationship when she was 16 of age him already being 48 years old.
They were happily married until his early death. And no, my mother wasn't a legacy hunter 😁 (He wasn't that rich). She was just fascinated with his personality, his look and his talents in painting, music and other things.

What I love about the movie is "Madeline" being obsessed with someone dead and that messes up their relationship, followed by Scotty being obsessed with someone dead and messing up their relationship - role reversal!
Interesting facts: the film was almost lost because the prints were not well maintained. The restoration was quite a big job!
The trombone shot/dolly zoom originated from this movie. There is also heavy use of extreme close ups of objects (jewellery, flowers, hair), as he often uses in other movies.
Many recurring Hitchcock themes appear in the movie including someone vanishing without a trace, conspiracy of silence, and a perfect murder (that turns out to be flawed).
IMHO this film should not be remade, ever (except perhaps by David Lynch as his films cover many of the same themes such as identity switches).

This role is somewhat of a departure for Jimmy in that he was sexually obsessive and the content was lurid. Normally, Stewart is decent and clean cut.

Hitchcock is so good at using camera movements, shots and other film techniques, like widescreen, colour, music, 3D even, that I forget when watching his films that it is all so symbolic and psychological, all so carefully drawn on paper and thought out before his filming began. He makes the same film always again, in a good way. The wrong man, the wrong woman, impossible love, cruel antagonists, desperate romantic struggle in a hopeless world. "Film love-making like a fight and fight scenes like love-making".

Trying to follow all the pathways this film beckons you onto is a good way to get vertigo yourself. Bravo for taking up the challenge - and though I'm not the first to mention it, if you enjoyed Stewart and Novak together here, they appeared together again within the year in the supernatural rom-com "Bell, Book and Candle" (a personal favorite of mine, with a cool score by George Duning), a movie suitable for Christmas as well as Halloween! I ache to reveal just a few piddling plot points, but a person can only see something for the first time once, and for now it's enough to know that this one has Stewart and Novak (and a cat - oops). I really don't think you'll have cause to regret it afterward. 🙃 🙂

If you didn't notice in your rewatch, go back to the scene where "Madeline" pulls away from Scotty to go up into the church. She's trying to tell him to let her go because she has something she must do, he is arguing with her, and she says "look, it wasn't supposed to happen this way" - ***in Judy's voice!*** In that moment Judy full on breaks character and talks to him as herself; Hitchcock puts it right in our face and we don't pick up on it! So once you go back and watch it knowing the twists, it's so chilling that it was clear as day she was someone else.

Something worth noting about the ending is that the Hayes code enforced by the movie studios at the time prohibited showing people getting away with crimes. Since Judy was an accessory to murder, the movie could not have ended with Scotty and Judy getting together even if that had seemed like a good dramatic choice (which it probably wouldn't have been). She had to pay for her crime in some way, so having her fall off the tower was a dramatic way of making that happen without having to have Scotty turn her into the authorities, which his character might not have been willing to do. Thanks for the reaction!

Yes, you can really drive that close to the Golden Gate Bridge. That scene is set at Fort Point, which is a Civil War era brick fort under the San Francisco end of the bridge. It's part of the national park system. It should be a popular attraction, but for some reason most people don't know about it. The road that leads to it is near the entrance to the bridge, and it's possible to drive right by it without realizing it.
Kim Novak did a great job playing two characters who are really the same character. Judy doesn't just look different from Madeleine. Her voice and manner are different. The part of the movie where Judy transforms back into Madeleine took some really fine acting.
You were right about Scottie. He really is a creep. His obsession with Judy, his desire to take over her life and transform her into someone else is pretty twisted. He says to Judy about the color of her hair, "Judy, please, it can't matter to you." Try telling that to any woman you know and see where it gets you!

For better or worse he's a huge Hitchcock fan and created BODY DOUBLE in the 1980's (like it or not) as a direct update of the circumstances that inhabit VERTIGO. I like it for the precise Hitchcock influence so evident in De Palma's version. It substitutes claustrophobia for acrophobia which affects everything including the directing style.

Great reaction to another classic Hitchcock movie!. Personally I think Rear Window is his best film and you should definitely give it a watch if you get the chance. I think I've mentioned it before but another film that came out around the same time is Night Of The Demon (1957) which is another psychological horror/thriller and is a classic if you want to try that. Look for the UK version though as the American release under the Curse Of The Demon title was a cut and edited version.

One of the most frustrating and subtlety disturbing movies I’ve seen. Oddly enough, it had an aftertaste similar to No Country for Old Men, that feeling like a big brain director knew exactly what I wanted, but withheld it to give me what he felt I deserved. Can’t stop mulling it over in my mind…

Vertigo is not exactly a conventional movie, it's more a mesmerizing cinematic experience... to really apreciate it we have to forget the amount of narrative inconsequences Hitchcock introduced in order to create its peculiar 'out-of-this-world' atmosphere.
When people values the movie in the conventional way it's not exactly a perfect mechanism, but that's not the intention of Hitchcock...
He tried kind of the same years before with Rebecca, which has many beautiful 'disturbing' moments, but the whole storyline is not the most interesting...
Same with The Birds, which is founded in an almost ridiculous premise
Hitchcock was never much interested in 'big stories', but in little anecdotes which were useful to develope his incredible arsenal of resources

This film was given a sort of a remake by Brian DePalma in 1976,with "Obsession". (Cliff Robertson; Genevieve Bujold)
Man loses beautiful wife and young daughter in a car crash after a bungled kidnapping. 20 years later, man encounters woman who bears a resemblance to his beautiful late wife and attempts to make her over to look exactly the same.
It's clearly a homage - but to say that its resolution is 'uncomfortable' is putting it mildly!
I like Vertigo, but it's not among my Hitchcock favourites. It's a little too plodding and self-indulgent for my liking; but revealing the 'twist' earlier than expected was a master stroke;because we want to shout to Scotty " open your eyes! Work it out! You're being used!!"
To add to Hitchcock movie suggestions:
To catch a thief - a fun little 'whodunnit' (an unusual genre for Hitchcock to dabble in);with a beautiful cast and equally beautiful locations.
Marnie - a psychological thriller, along similar lines to Vertigo.

Since Gavin Elster was a gold-digger, he had no appreciation for what it meant to an honest man to have a profession that identifies his self-image to a large extent. If you involve a police detective as a tool for a murder scheme, his feelings of betrayal are going to unhinge him, as what happened here. Scottie didn't murder Judy, but he thought he had to put here back at the scene of the crime...he was reckless but also mentally imbalanced since he'd watched the real Madeline die.

Horror genre? Hitchcock never made Horror Movies - suspense yes, horror no. There were occasional horrific moments in his films. But that's quite different. The landing on the beach in Saving Private Ryan (yes, I know it's not by Hitchcock) was horrific but it wasn't a Horror Movie. One possible exception was "Frenzy" with its explicit and prolonged scenes of violence, including a rape.

"Vertigo" is a title that film critics and historians love to fawn over. But as much as I like Hitchcock's work myself, this is not one I'm particularly fond of. The first half of the movie is really good... but after Madeleine's death, it becomes increasingly weird and disturbing--and not in a good way. Nor would I really consider this to be a "horror" movie, strictly-speaking. The closest Hitchcock came to what we would consider "horror" today would be "Psycho" (1960) and "The Birds" (1963). So what other Hitchcock films should you see? A number of other commenters have recommended "Rear Window" (1954), also with James Stewart, and I agree totally. Another one to think about is a film that's comparatively little-known today, one of the last that Hitchcock did before he died, "Frenzy" (1972)--it's a suspenseful and macabre story that's very well done.
