The best 49er film break down on UA-cam
Thanks!
Your breakdowns are always a highlight of the football season for me. Great work!
Glad you like them!
@@jonnydel i definitely do. I been watching you and thl do breakdowns on the webzone for a long time and your UA-cam channel is even better.
@jonnydel is back!!! Its now offically football season!
Was wondering if you were going to do breakdowns on pre-season. Happy the answer is yes. 👍
A resounding yes!
Finally! Been waiting for months to see your breakdowns again.
And you win the first fried egg award of the season! 🍳
Great content has returned to UA-cam
🤜🤛
Offensive lines sucks
@@obidianudokem858 they definitely struggled
@@jonnydel I wish they drafted a right tackle
@obidianudokem858 TBF, we didn't see a single starting tackle in that game and IMO, the backup interior OL played much worse than the tackles
So excited for this season, and all I’m going to learn from you Jonnydel! Big fan of the channel, thanks for all your work!
Awesome! Thank you!
The best in the biz. Thanks Jonny!
Thanks!
Nice dramatic visual/audio introduction to the program. Gentle star wars. I also like the way you weave voice and musical theme. Good production values JD.
Wow, thank you!
He took 3.44 seconds to pass. And when he did pass he was often late, hence the two dropped picks. Had he gotten the ball out on time they'd have been caught by the intended receiver.
ball on time and eye discipline. he was just a tick slow on a bunch of stuff
I agree but looking at the first Td pass that was almost intercepted. He was as on time as he possibly could of been to hit your 4th option on a pa pass to your blind side. The defender in his face and side arming it made the ball curve. It was a straight pass that’s a perfect play by him. It’s a game of inches
The plan was to work out the kinks by the end of season last year. Obviously he got injured so all of it delayed a year. Problem is, now they have CMC and Hargrave so it’s WIN NOW BABY and you can’t expect Trey to go into Lincoln Financial and still be learning the position. I still think they keep Trey and work with him. Maybe you can get the Steph Curry extension where he gets paid before he hits his stride at a discounted rate. I wouldn’t give up on Trey Lance.
I love this take
Gets paid what how much would you pay him
Finally, you're back! Meaning the season is about to start!
Feels great, baby
By far the best analysis on youtube. Can't believe you only have 18k subscribers.
We're rising though! One game at a time
I’m a big Trey fan but it’s hard to stick with him after watching that game Sunday. He need to be great the next two games.😊
I hope Trey does well too, but he was mostly very bad in this game. Film don't lie.
Never miss an episode. Appreciate your work bro
Thank you so much 😀
It's great having you back, sir!
Great to be back!
Oh how ive missed the 49ers Playbook. Thank you JD
And I've missed you
Great analysis.
Trey is just can’t throw on time. This is his biggest problem. He doesn’t trust himself and doesn’t trust what he sees.
He needs more experience and confidence.
That timing takes....well...time. Unfortunately, it's a luxury he no longer has
he doesn't trust it cuz he has no experience. He needs reps to get it. It's like the "you need 2 years experience for this entry level job"
@@jonnydelhe’s never had it going to the 49ers. Dumbest decision by a organization ever to draft someone who needs a lot of work on a “Super Bowl ready team”. They have wasted years of his life

Bang bang!
absolutely love the breakdowns and your unbiased opinion on Trey Lance
I sure appreciate it!
Thanks Jonnydel! You're the best. Question. Do you think its odd that Lance still hasn't figured out some of these concepts yet? It seems Lance will only throw to a receiver that is clearly open, but if a receiver is "slightly" open or will be open - its like he doesnt trust the process. Do you remember one of the greatest throws Jimmy ever made - it was against the Cardinals - I think Buda Baker was covering Emmanuel Sanders and Jimmy threw that ball in the perfect spot towards the sidelines, Baker never even saw it coming. It seems Lance isn't capable of "throwing the receiver open" like that. Seems he's too worried about getting intercepted? Hope that will change in the future.
ua-cam.com/video/FMLT-VoFW8s/v-deo.html (Thanks Josh Putnam!) - Fast forward to 15:30. I think it was actually Patrick Peterson on defense. What a throw! Hoping Lance can work on making throws with anticipation rather than only throwing it when he sees them open....
Well, Jimmy was coming off a full college career in a pro style offense and then 4 years behind Brady.
Trey has thrown fewer passes in college/NFL combined than Brady did just last year.
@@jonnydel Right, I don't expect Trey to make those type of throws just yet, but it seems for a guy who has been around football this long, some of those throws have to come out. I would say its one thing if his throws were ugly or he was getting picked off, but he's not even pulling the trigger on throws that are wide open which is really a head scratcher. Once again, thanks for the all the hard work you put into your breakdowns!
@@bobbymira8234 I think the main point is that he really *hasn't* been around football for that long..
@@ryanhenze3075 well of course, I get that. But still. Theres a certain expectation from any person playing the QB position and its mind boggling what has happened. When he played vs the Texans two seasons ago, he actually looked way better than two days ago. So he's had plenty of time to learn since then, but it looks like he went backwards. Like he "un-learned" how to be a quarterback. He looked like he never played before, being so hesitant to release the pass on many plays vs the Raiders. So regardless of how many snaps he's taken over the years, he should at least look ready to go - but he didnt. Looked lost out there versus a bunch of backups, which is why Trey worries me.
Great job Jonny! There's only a few other breakdowns, and everyone is seeing and saying the same thing about Trey. He gets better as time goes on, which is a great sign of what he could become. Kyle probably sees it the same way as us and the potential there, which is why he wants to keep Trey for now. Good idea to keep Trey and Sam in the depth chart. All these Trey haters are not real niner fans, and have yet to a video analysis like this
Yeah, it's all there on film. People will either accept it or won't
THANK YOU! In most cases you would hope a young QB learns and fixes his mistakes game to game from live action. Trey has shown he can do it series to series. He’s just never had the opportunity to keep buildings week to week. It’s crazy how people can’t grasp that concept.
Oh, how I've missed your film breakdown! #JD49
me too....meeee toooo
I'm not challenging the notion of Lance needing better eye discipline but if you watch the play that's on screen as that comment is made (especially in slower motion) you could imagine that the looking and pumping short was by design and Conley could've been open deep if the line held up. Looks like a combo route
From the playbook the fade route is actually an alert and the stick route #1 in the progression.
@@jonnydel i made the mistake of commenting too early. The endzone angle showed his intent with his footwork and how he kind of overstride and he couldn't reset
Showing how he bounces back is big for me. It tells me he's learning and able to execute properly. With enough reps he'll get that "feel" for how to manipulate with his eyes and the timing and confidence in his decisiveness will show. Glad we have Brock until he gets there and hope we can keep Trey and see him develop too as a Niner, Go Niners!
I have to disagree a little here. I think he stares down receivers because he doesn't have a good processor. He doesn't have time to manipulate defensive backs with his eyes because he's lacking certainty and needs to watch the receiver. I feel like if he doesn't see it, he doesn't trust it, and by the time he sees it, it's too late or he's tipped his hand to the defense.
By processor, I mean he's able to see if he likes it and move on. Most guys who don't have a good processor will sit on a read too long. He was moving through reads pretty quick.
Can you a Sam Darnold Breakdown?
Gonna see how much of Sam I can get to
Thanks for the breakdown as always, and showing Trey's lack of eye manipulation, i.e., staring down the (actual) receivers. Hopefully he gets comfortable enough in the offense to get this working correctly. So far he's not there. He definitely needs reps, so I expect him to start at least the next exhibition game.
Trey had a very rusty start, having not played in a long time, but settled down and made some good plays, including some unscripted. Overall, he's still very raw, but improving.
13:44 Nick actually got tripped by Mason.
What was the issue with his ball placement on some of his throws? Some passes seem to be really behind the receivers and saw one sail high.
Timing
I’ve been waiting for this
Yes!!!
He should have had 3 INTs in this game. He looked hesitant with his first reads, skipped the second reads, and went straight to the check downs and even then missed some of them. The offensive line had two truly bad plays but most of his sacks were self created from hesitating & not throwing to the open receiver. Young QBs would LOVE to be in the same offensive systems with the same coach for 3 years yet he looks like it's his first time playing. It's time to find a way to trade him to some desperate QB depleted team.
You nailed it!
Well....you definitely feel strongly about it
@@jonnydel I'm old school, so it's not about "my feelings". It's about thinking logically about what my eyes are seeing.
Love it. How do I learn more about this chess game we call football? It is absolutely beautiful.
Well, I teach as much as I can. footballxos.com is a good resource as well
#17 looks like he was open all day lol
Conley did have a nice game
Wooooof.. sure it’s preseason and sure he hasn’t gotten the reps, but 2.5 years in the system and he still looks lost. Gotta love when Purdy comes in with next to no reps plays insanely well immediately and everyone says ‘oh it’s the system’, ‘oh he always has guys wide open’. Then trey comes in and implodes and everyone’s like ‘man the o line sucks’, ‘he just needs more time’, ‘it’s all there you can tell’. You know KS isn’t gonna like this and you can already start to see receivers and offensive linemen downgrading their effort from frustration. Meanwhile purdy elevated everyone. Clear choice lads.
This is exactly what I’ve been saying. Trey needs reps the more he’s see’s these concepts the better he’ll get at making the right reads. He’s just needs to be ready when he gets his opportunity
All about time on task
I think Trey Lance need to be on a team that is tanking like the Arizona Cardinals or Carolina Panthers. That way there will be no expectations and he can make mistakes and learn from them.
That would probably be best for him, but not us. Which is rather unfortunate
I think we are ready to start bringing Ryan Leaf into the conversation.
Ohhhhhhh, Lance doesn't have anywhere close to the mental issues Leaf did and Lance is at least showing some positive movement. His biggest problem, like Jimmy, has been staying healthy
Trey’s a (much!) nicer guy, which has meant we stuck with him, prolonging the damage. We’ve lost three firsts, a third, and Jimmy Garoppolo’s career, the Chargers only gave up two firsts a second and Eric Metcalfe.
@@jonnydel The irony. He was mostly brought in, because Jimmy couldn't stay healthy.
Timing, footwork, trusting what you see, and looking off your receivers. The only thing holding him back is himself. 🎈
Well, this really highlights that if we had to rely on Trey as our starter we would be in trouble. He’s just not ready.
No what this highlights that what he’s always needed was reps and in game experience preferably week to week in game experience.
@@PhrozenThumbz so you want to put the season on him? Because I’d rather have a guy who can do this basic stuff.
@@willbarton7018 I not saying that. I’m just saying you’re stance on the highlights are wrong to me. The “not ready” response is lazy. He CAN’T BE READY WITHOUT LIVE IN GAME REPS” 🤦🏽♂️ That’s always been the point of emphasis for him. Kyle should’ve started him year 1 but didn’t. Year 2 he gets injured another year a live in game experience gone. Now the only way he gets them this year is preseason or regular season due to injury. The situation sucks but again it always has been and will be about live in game reps for Trey to reach his ceiling. Practice can only take you so far.
@@PhrozenThumbz I very much disagree. The issues that Johnny has pointed out are habits that can be formed in practice. This is all stuff that you can work on in practice. Reading the Defense, looking off the defenders that has nothing to do with game experience. You can learn that stuff in practice.
As far as Game experience goes, that is definitely more mental in terms of dealing with pressure and adjusting. But these things that Johnny is highlighting these need to be habits and habits are created in practice.
Brock already does all this stuff naturally. He has these habits in him already, so it makes no sense to just put Trey in the game and set him up to fail when he can’t seem to play the short game.
@@willbarton7018 🤷🏽♂️ We just agree to disagree. QBs can’t/don’t get hit in practice, QBs can’t lose a game in practice. Nothing…ABSOLUTELY NOTHING can simulate live in game experience, and I know you know that 😂 🤦🏽♂️
Every other comment was, "there was a missed opportunity here" which doesn't bode well for his performance. He wasn't up and down at all... he was just down.
Well....he had a couple ups, lol. I didn't want to be too negative
@@jonnydel And you definitely weren't too negative 😆 that's for sure.
You're dead on with the eyes/head. Purdy is really good at staring straight down the seam as the play develops, then looks to the throw. Lance is still staring down, which is causing issues
Will you breakdown Darnold?
Can we get something similar for Darnold?
Mayyyyybe. I wanna touch on some other positions and probably won't have time for 2 more vids this week
His mistakes are from a lack of playing experience and self film study. The concepts aren't complicated. Great review.
Agreed
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeaaaaaaaaaaa Jonnydel is back bby
Feels great, baby
finally!
I know, right!?!?
What music do you use man I’ve heard it before I found you and I can’t find it lmao
I'll have to remember what the name of it is. It's from the YT library. I remember seeing it used by someone else once but forget where
Those naked boots - NFL defenses have had them figured out against every team since late last season.
You’re back baby!! Haha
I guess I don't see this arm talent so many people talk about. Jimmy made many more of these throws than Trey can
The throws aren't about arm talent, in that regard. As far as arm talent, the ball does jump out of his hand. He's got a big arm and when he's on time and in rhythm it's really accurate. For him, it's 95% above the shoulders stuff
@jonnydel I guess I don't see it. His throws look like any other average QB to me. Anyway we can numerically measure this talent? I am not an expert, just a guy who watched a 7th round pick pass this kid on day one
5:50 Dwelley made something out of nothing. That would have been a pick-6 if Dwelley didn't snatch it one-handed.
Still, not everyone gets that throw off
@@jonnydel The potential pick-6?
Quick question was that the starting O-Line
no
Nope. Entirely 2nd/3rd string guys
That was the story of the game missed opportunity.... Kyle will grill them I expect to bounce back at home
I'm expecting big things from the next game
what I noticed and am most dissapointed to see is that he looked to have the same athleticism as Jimmy G in the pocket. No awareness and extremely slow. Like that one time he attempted (?) to run away from a Dline player.... couldn't outrun him or outmaneuver him. I don't want to cringe every time my QB steps back to throw any more. Give him a few more years of reps, he definitely needs more development
Yeah, needs to grow
Who is LG #76? He filled in for Trent Williams and I thought he played very good.
That’s moore and he was quite aweful
Correct. He was baaaad.
Lance is still so raw. Its unfortunate but, with 2 years of injuries, he has missed his window with the 49ers. I also think Lance doesn't fit the scheme. He could be traded around the trade deadline & I sincerely wish him the best.
* That said: I'm all in on Purdy. Warner & Williams believe in him & that's more than I need to hear. Fyi... Montana didn't have a rocket arm & most certainly wasn't a dual threat QB.
** Montana was a general, something that Purdy may have in himself.
Lance can only throw to a guy that is wide open. He can’t throw a receiver open by throwing to a spot where a receiver will be. That was Kaepernick’s issue as well. Those passes have to come out quick to a spot and let the receiver get YAC. That’s the Shanahan game plan.
WE BACK
feels great, baby
Reps, that's all he needs. Last year was that year where we could've given to him. Now he has to learn on the fly, which from this video shows that he could. That's everything at the moment, and hopefully he can use this minor mistakes to learn how to implement eye discipline to happen.
REPS are NOT going to fix Trey's issues...He NEEDS to get with someone to work on his atrocious throwing motion and to teach him how to read even the most basic of defenses...until this happens he will NEVER be a starter in the NFL.
This is why you never use first round picks on a guy the played ALL of his ball in the FCS and only played 20 or so games TOTAL...He has very few reps in college and played against VERY inferior competition.
@@drumguy1960 sound like you made up your mind. It sounds like the limited reps he did get and improvement is nothing compared to what Brock did. It sound like no matter what, the niners made a mistake. What could Lance do - learn from his mistakes or process faster or add some nuances - to show that.
I know Brock is more developed. I know people doesn’t like Lance for other reasons. I know you feel that we should win now. What exactly from the preseason game showed you that Trey didn’t have the throw or the defense reading?
Great breakdown. Thanks as always for a clear and concise view of the game. Although I have no problem with Lance, I'm a little tired of hearing about his skill set. There are plenty of QBs in the USFL, XFL and CFL that have the physical skills but can't make it in the NFL. Right now he looks like a rookie, and he's had plenty of time to get past that. We can blame it on the lack of reps, but frankly I"m not buying that argument - but if it's real, than Lance is out of luck with the 49ers. He's not going to get a lot of reps unless Purdy fails miserably or gets hurt again.
That's totally fair. In the end, Lance's challenge will be to match the nuance of the game with the physical skills. I always weight physical attributes of a QB toward the back end of necessities
On that first 3rd down where we ran that ohio concept, Acho did a breakdown of the play. Why is what you are saying different from what Acho is saying? Besides his doomer statements I mean. He basically says that Trey CANNOT throw the ball to the stick (Acho calls it an out). You say that there is a window, and that He could basically look off the defender to get it in there to the stick. Acho and TJ say that you have to throw to the WR running deep (they call it the hole shot). Could you break that down so I can understand? Not being a jerk... genuinely curious.
Possible he wanted the stick but seen the safety bite hard and was going to reset for the fade but the line collapsed and he got sacked. That’s why Kyle said the sack wasn’t his fault. Remember Jimmy always just hit the short stuff. Hopefully Purdy looks for the deep shots bc they are there often
@@natelidtke353 Maybe, But TJ was saying that the timing is exactly the same on the stick and the fade. They were saying that you never throw the stick like it shouldnt even be a question. Maybe he was looking at the stick to get the defense to bite and was too timid to throw the fade? In the replay the fade is literally wide open if Trey throws that spot.
I actually went back and forth with Acho about it. In the end, he does agree and we both agree that Lance didn't work the play right. twitter.com/jonnydels/status/1691478541588643841?s=20
@@jonnydel Thanks for letting me know! Also, I followed. Way to go man!
He needs more reps 💯
Agreed
"A little unsure what he was seeing" I believe he seen the Raiders hunting him like wild gain. QB's are best with a clean pocket
Well sure they're gonna play better with a clean pocket. But the defense gets paid a lot of money to make the pocket a center of chaos. How does the QB play in a circle of violence.
He had no time at 5:45
Saying he was decisive is terribly wrong
Terrible Offensive line just isn't giving anybody ANYBODY second read possibilities. 51 is a serious liability.
They were more down than up this game, for sure.
He’s playing w wr he doesn’t know😂😂😂
He looks like he lacks timing and trust, but then again, he hasn't played in forever, and he doesn't have a ton of experience to begin with.
1000%
Trey lance stays in Vegas is what I wanna see
bazinga
Lance fan club need to face facts you can’t fix holding the ball for to long and happy feets, there’s a reason niners got ZERO trade offer for him.
What I see is a qb who’s more worried about getting lit up and avoiding the pressure of the dline. Niners offensive line got worked, it’s hard to sit in the pocket and throw with timing when you’re getting pressured 47% of the snaps… I also see a lot of pockets Brock Purdy would bail out of lance does a great job of shrugging off defenders and creating space to throw downfield, if he was playing with the starters who he has built trust in and a better offensive line I think we’d see a drastic difference.
So I partially agree with that. If Trey played with a better group, sure he would be afforded more protection, but the defense he would go up against would also be better than the Raiders second string, so it kind of evens out. The reason I would disagree with the offensive line being the key issue, is it was only an issue on some of the plays. There were times where Trey had enough time to make a throw in the pocket but didn't for whatever reason, and the receiver was open on those opportunities. Why isnt he pulling the trigger? Im not sure what he's seeing but it doesnt look good for him right now.
@@bobbymira8234 that’s a fair point but none of those were necessarily lay ups or easy throws like I said they require timing and anticipation and it seemed like he was anticipating the pressure more than anything, he definitely needs to fire the ball quicker that’s what’s required in this offense but I think after getting sacked and having a couple dropped ints he started to hesitate and hold the ball and that’s what I mean by the oline did him no favors, with that being said he did a good job going through his progressions and keeping plays alive
Having the starters definitely would help, no question. But, some of these issues remain a problem even if you have starters in there
Offensive lines sucks
Were definitely more down than up
@@jonnydel I don't know how the offensive line will get better
That line breaks down in 2 seconds almost every time. Jimmy would have gotten sacked a few times out there too.
I have been an NFL fan for 61 years since I started watching the Minnesota Vikings on our new family Motorola colored TV and stereo console in 1962. Four years later I got to watch the first Super Bowl.
Now I see very wealthy NFL franchise owners ( individuals and groups of investors ) all playing a game among themselves with all their slaves obeying all their commands. There are a few owners who still believe in finding a franchise quarterback to keep on the team for more than 6 years and build a winning team around him such as Tom Brady and recently Patrick Mahomes have experienced. Do you actually believe the owners of the Kansas City Chiefs will trade their franchise quarterback who has already delivered them 2 Super Bowls, knowing he could possible deliver 4 more in the future?
The owners of the 49er franchise are very jealous of their uncle Eddy who won 4 Super Bowl rings. Now they have absolutely no patience to find a franchise quarterback to play 12 seasons or more and build a great offense to protect them and a good defence to make sure their franchise quarterback keeps winning even if he is having a bad year that cause some fans anxiety and want to get rid of him for another hero.
Buddy his pre snap reads are trash, why are you still hanging onto this dude.
I'm not hanging on to anyone. I've been pretty supportive of Brock the whole time but also don't feel like Trey should be thrown away quite yet
Gotta remember, this was also his first game back since last September off a SERIOUS injury!
By not calling reads a high school QB can make without blinking? 😂
The injury has NOTHING to do with Trey Lances woes....his mechanics are still terrible (yes his release is faster) mechanics are still terrible. and he STILL has NO clue what the defense is doing.
@drumguy1960 lmao!! Have u ever come back from a serious injury? I am pretty sure he needs to get back in the "swing of things" I'm sure he's rusty, scared, etc.
Give me a break man, he has limited experience, he's basically still a rookie
@@drumguy1960 His mechanics aren't horrible. You're an idiot though
@@jessestapleton5256 Yes he IS basically still a rookie. A 3 year rookie with an inability to read defenses and throw an accurate ball. Abilities that (Brock Purdy) an actual rookie last year does possess.....Why? Because he was a 4 year starter that played against actual players and not basically JuCo players.
The 49ers made a HUGE mistake trading 2 first round picks and a third to get this guy.....He was a second or third round talent at best. After Trevor Lawrence there wasn't a QB in that draft I would have taken in the first round. Show me ANY stats to tell me I am wrong about that statement. You won't because you can't because they don't exist.
No, no accuracy
Flight? U mean crash landing
Well.....at least you could walk away from this landing
Freaking offensive line for SF was 🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮 🗑
Kaepernick was better than this kid at the same point of his 49er career.
It’s painfully obvious that he isn’t good enough. He misses basic throws too high or too low, he has no understanding of timing, has ZERO touch, doesn’t trust his receivers but most importantly he has no confidence and I’m sure that rubs off to his teammates.
This is pretty over-stated. Lance has talent, needs grooming.
@@jonnydel so does Darnold but that hasn’t worked out for him yet. I have no problem with Lance, I wanted him to be amazing but he looked as raw as the rookie QBs looked last week. Can he be good eventually? Absolutely, but it won’t be this year and most likely it won’t be with the niners because they don’t have time to “groom” him.
Trey was hot garbage the dude didn't call reads that you learn in HIGHSCHOOL 😅 cut him now and get Sam Darnold the 2nd man reps now
nah, tell us how you really feel. JK
