I always thought it was significant Petula Spencer was able to crack Inspector Stoppard’s world weary demeanour in a way other characters weren’t able to. Spencer makes Stoppard smile at 1:04 and 1:54. Stoppard recognised the two of them were both quite cynical and experienced in their own way.

I really did suspect Petula’s mother was the killer, she and Dennis were the least suspicious and she got more screen time than the former
