First time stumbled onto your channel today and man that is just some INSANE guitar playing. Instant subbed to your channel. Seriously mind-blown
Ooohh digging the RR licks 10:38 mark!! Great playing. Your tone is always so killer!!
what a great guitar player! Your playing motivates me to pick up the guitar and practice! thanks
"Music is about fun"... That opening certainly was. 😀If I'm having a sucky playing or tone day I just watch an Euge vid and get inspired. BTW, love my 90's Tokai, great axe.
Awesome riffing on the Tokai song! Killer tone as always. I see Pepita is guarding your Boogie. 😄🤘🏻
Tokais are awesome. I love my 40 year old Tokai strat. I've played a bunch of em, and they are all very good if they have been taken care of.
Great playing and great video as always. Love your guitars man, very nice instruments 🤘🤘
Great video and brilliant playing! I have one LS136F that I love. Subscribed. 👍
One of my absolute favorite LPs is a Tokai LP Standard type, an LS-136. It ticks all the boxes of what a good LP should be like: singing tone, chunking rhythms, buttery cleans, and STAYS IN TUNE. I love Tokais and MIJ LPs
Easily my favourite youtube guitarist and personality, its impossible not to love euge! Me and my friend always say " Hi, im euge valovirta" all the time, its iconic! 🤘🤘 big fan from Australia
As soon as I hear "Hi, I'm Euge Valovirta" I know it's going to be interesting and informative. Great channel, great tats, great playing Euge, thank you.
Totally badass, man! You are correct, music should be about having fun. Respect!
I have a Fujigen made LP. The History line they made for Shimamura. Uses maple recovered from boats which sunk over 100 years ago. Amazing quality for the price.
Cool! Yeah those Japanese luthiers really know how to make great guitars 🙏👌.
Tokai's are so awesome. Might have to get one for myself one of these days.
Hi Euge. Today I got to try a Marshall JCM 900, I didn't get to crank the master though so it sounded kinda whack. But the feel was different from my katana, it was so responsive and dynamic. I think I understand the word dynamic now. Tomorrow I will order a JVM 205, SD1 and an attenuator. Am really excited to get it and start playing it!
Cool! Yeah real tube amps are real tube amps and computers are computers 😎.
After getting screwed over after purchasing my first 'authentic' guitar, I sold that bad memory POS and picked up a Maybach L'59. Love it! I've been exploring alternate LPs ever since. Tokai is on my list!
I watched this the other day just as I was buying a Tokai. Really glad I did. You inspired me to shave the neck and it came out fantastic!
The craftsmenship of Tokai is insane! I imported one from Japan a few years ago but unfortunately I didn't like 50's neck profile.
Great vid , have a LS 200f custom shop with 5A Canadian maple top and an LS 198 gold top … still have a Gibson 94 standard I bought new and dear to my heart but after that as quality went down and prices up there is no way they could compare to the tokai build quality at all… 🎉🎉🎉
I agree, some of the best Les Paul’s are not Gibson. Slash used a 59 copy for AFD. Your Flag Tokai is really amazing sounding! The I never heard the 57/66 EMG set sound like that. I can only imagine what the 81/85 sounded like
Hi Euge, I was lucky enough to discover Tokai before the mid 2000's boom in Japanese guitars, well not just Tokai, add Greco, Bacchus, Orville by Gibson and Burny to that list as well. My 2003 "custom shop" {Both my Tokai's are built by one of Japan's top Luthiers, It's a long story but I've spoken to him about my guitars, } Goldtop is a sensational LP, old forest Honduran mahogany body and neck, long neck tenon, excellent hardware and I have a set of custom wound alnico 8 pickups in it that scream, It's a "forever" guitar. I also have another rare one that is one of six prototypes made in 2001, It's classed as a ls180 {it has LS320 specs} , It has the same old forest wood , the cleanest, tightest long tenon neck joint I've ever seen, an ebony board, and even has fret edge binding, It also has a custom set of hot pickups, I've barely played that one and it still has the plastic on the rear covers, It's a great guitar but the goldtop, somewhere in the 8 pound + range , is the best guitar I've ever played. My second favourite is a 1982 Greco RR {Randy Roades} model LP, It has more of a vintage tone but is so loud acoustically it's unreal, it has that real round Gibson tone, especially on the front pickup, and it's also a keeper... Thanks for the vid on the Japanese Tokai's mate, they are extremely underrated guitars and will stand up to the best from virtually any company at a fraction of the cost...
I bought a earrrrrly 80s Tokai Custom LP Triple Pickup Model, with the original P/Us (ala Paul Stanley) for 500 bucks it sold for 1,100 at auction. That thing had everything a LP should have, I didn't much care for the middle pickup being there, or the sound it produced, but the neck and bridge made seriously nice sound. Real ebony board, real chunky sustain.
The mini preview captions interpreted your name as El Governor. Not a bad nickname choice, lol
Gràcies per les teves lliçons!
I try one of Chinese made in tobacco sunburst and I really liked. I want one of this. Tokai do very well guitars in my opinion
import guitars are great, im fixing up a Burny JS model and its going to be sick !
Sweet guitars . You should try some Kirk Hammett Bone Breaker EMG's in one of them. They are great pickups and sound killer boosted !
That is a kick ass shirt! Where'd you get that from?? Haha. Oh yeah, awesome guitars too! lol :D
I love Tokai guitars. I wanted a good les paul and Gibson is not providing them anymore ( in the standard range)... all the Gibson I tried had big QC problems. I found an amazing Tokai premium serie, lc230s and it's a beast!!!! Perfectly built and sustain for years ^^
Interesting, informative, and FUN. 😉Those Tokai guitars all sounded great. I'd be happy to have just one. Your pinch harmonics are particularly good, and I know there are a number of factors to make them jump out, such as technique, pickup type, location, tone settings, etc. If you had to pick one or two of the most important components to getting really great harmonics, what would they be? Thanks
Awesome video.I have a The Samick les paul custom guitar from the 80s,With a les paul headstock. Its Amazing I think its made from japan.
for me , i would choose guitar brand in japan like fgn , navigator , edwards , tokai or esp because more stable quality , detail
Amazing how much balls the Rebel Flag has.. each one has its own character . Do you overwrap the tailpiece in all your guitars?..I do it find the break angle difference on the saddles makes for a slinkier feel.. cheers!!
I do it with guitars that has the LP tailpiece. Or whatever it’s called 😎.
Great video! Euge, do you have experience with the ESP Edwards Les Pauls?
Thanks! I’ve tried a few at Musamaailma (local shop in Helsinki and ESP’s distributor) and I think they’re really good. At least the ones I’ve tried.
Sounding better than the wilde man and no pitch harmonics!~ Must have that old school Tobacco! Rock on!~
Have you had any experience with the newer Chinese Tokai ? there’s a couple used in the states on reverb that that could be had for a little under 500 shipped. I’d pretty happy with a decent husk expecting to replace hardware and electronics I like to tinker anyway. Are the Chinese made with the same dimensions and materials ?
Hey Euge always loved your work.
Is the old late 79s Greco guitars made in the same factory as Tokai?
There's a Ace Frehley "signature" I'm thinking of buying. But I know these Tokai guitars are awesome.
How would you compare them to your esp?
Tone wise everything really,
I've always loved that esp as soon as I saw you play it in shining.
@@EugeValovirta230V the guitar work for the god below is a fkn masterpiece. That end harmony gets me going every time
, Tear it up!
Mahogany are very very good but for me Indian Rosewood is the very excellent.More sustain and more beautyful.
Euge, i was watching the video CYHRA the making of No Halos in Hell. you are playing what looks like a new or one we have not seen in your videos Signature model black with white stripes but not emg 81 & 85 set Jesper is also playing it. the one with one gold tuner what are the specs on that guitar and where has it been hiding. i like the signature on the headstock looks sharp
Oh you’ve seen it many times just with EMG 81/85 set and all black hardware. Exactly same guitar (and specs) than my other ESP signatures.
But… I sold it to ESP collector a few months ago and bought a few 80s ESP Mirages 👌. I still have three of my signatures (one black, one white, one with stickers) so I’m good 😎: ua-cam.com/video/DOL8WMWdWho/v-deo.htmlsi=IRGRr9gHFDT35F-d
Hi! I don’t know if you have experience on other brands but can you tell how these Tokai Les Pauls compare to other similar made in Japan Les Pauls out there in terms of build quality? Like compared to old ESP Eclipses (before all that E2 nonsense), Edwards Les Pauls and Burny Les Pauls. This kind of comparison video would be great imo. Anyways, great videos and keep em coming!
In my experience all (or at least the most) Japan made guitars are really good and well made.
Hi Euge, that's funny bu I have a 1987's Burny tobacco burst with 59/Custom set, so it looks much as yours 🤘 Really cool collection!
One question from my side - is there any particular reason behind choosing Tokai over the other Japanese brands ( Burny, Orville Ibanez ) from "lawsuit" era? Kiitos!
Cool! The company I’ve been a loyal customer since 90s (Musamaailma) is one of the biggest retailers of Tokai in Europe and I like those a lot so that’s why 😎.
@@EugeValovirta230V Thanks! That's a good spirit 🙂 I'm definitely a big fan of those Japanese guitars so I'll keep my eyes on Tokai 👍
Hey, I have a single cut with a mahogany neck and I'd love to get all that gloss off but I'm a little scared of ruining the neck, i just wonder is it ok to do so on a mahogany neck? Does it warp easier and so on??
What brand/gauge of strings do you use on your LP’s tuned to Eb? Do you change gauges for other tunings?
Amazing 😁😁 Do you have classes online? Thanks man 👍
Thanks! I give lessons via Skype. If you’re interested please send me an email to: evalovirta@gmail.com
Can you tell me the model of your black Tokai that you have the skull sticker on? Is it an ALC62?
I am looking for a Tokai Les Paul Custom, but there seem to be a lot of fakes out there now
No idea. I bought it in late 90s / early 2000s so I can’t remember anymore.
You've inspired me to find a Tokai. Are you preferring your cab over your Bogren IR these days?
Cool! I guess so 😎. But I use the Bogren IRs on many productions. For example all solos on the forthcoming Cyhra album I used my signature IR ’Valovirtuous’ from Jens. I had a band recently at my studio and we used my Marshall cab (one of them) for rhythms and for solos my IR.
I noticed that quite a few of your guitars are top wrapped. Do you prefer to keep the tailpiece down and top wrap instead of increasing the height of the tail piece?
Yes all LPs are wrapped and the reason is like you wrote. And ai like the feel when I’m resting my right hand on top of the bridge 👌.
Hey Euge, do all your Tokias have a mahogany body? That’s been my favorite wood so far plus alder. What’s your opinion on tonewood?
I think so. I’m not that picky; if it sounds & feels good, it sounds & feels good no matter what wood was used 👌.
@@EugeValovirta230V I found some guitars that don’t sound or feel good even after upgrading it. How odd? And those where basswood body guitars.
Käytätkö Euge vielä sitä EMG mikkien mukana tullutta foamia yläsatulan takana vai onko jokin muu keino käytössä ylimääräisten äänten pois kitkemiseksi? PS: Mahtavia videoita! 🤘
Sitä ja sit uusin on, et leikkaa sellasesta ikkunantiivisteestä palasen ja liimaa kiinni lapaan. Toimii: ua-cam.com/video/yIpef6mZFSc/v-deo.html
Hey Euge did your tokai lc guitars all come with jumbo frets? I’m ordering one in the beginning of next year and they come with the vintage style .
Sorry I did miss that are all your tokai guitars poly finish or nitro ? I wanna say poly since your tokai’s still look fairly new for how much you play or you take really good care of your stuff?!
I'm using the 1979 Tokai Reborn model.
I like Tokai more than Gibson.
81 & 85 pickups are active, how did you apply them to the Tokai Les Paul?
Did you put the battery in the spare space?
Cool! Just put the pickups in and the battery in the cavity like with any guitar 😎👌.
@@EugeValovirta230V I'm currently working on a Reborn model.
I'm going to buy another Love Rock model with a Honduras mahogany body and try it with an active pickup.
thank you so much!
Hello, thanks for the interesting video. A question about some other kind of gear while looking at your chair😁 what model is it and an you recommend it? I need these switchable armbars..
Thanks! It’s this: www.tectake.ch/de/burostuhl-springsteen-404156?gclid=Cj0KCQiAveebBhD_ARIsAFaAvrEGLQWF3TqwY2bllWWY-_lem6qzCP6zClSZuFWNXnk74arzk2NG9r8aAlIREALw_wcB
@@EugeValovirta230V thanks. Do you like it and how tall are you? I'm 1.98m😁
Great song E.V., you should half time, down tune it and re-release that bad boy...
I don't know how you don't have more subscribers. I don't know why I didn't think about shaving a thick neck.
Fastneck on the tokai guitars ? or on your all guitars ?
The neck is as fast as I play 😎. But seriously I have no idea what that ’fastneck’ means.
Nice Video Euge👌
I couldn’t resist to buy another Tokai. Now I am storing my old Tokai in a Les Paul Case. Would you tune down the strings a step/halfstep to store the guitar longterm?
Thanks! I have most of my guitars downtuned anyway so yes but I wouldn’t change the tuning they’re set up ’cos the neck will most likely bend. You can fix that of course but I don’t see any point making things harder 😎.
@@EugeValovirta230V Thanks for the answer. I will follow your wise advice but I won’t show your videos to my guitars. Because they are gonna leave me and move to Finland, you’re playing is that great👏
😎🤟. I haven’t lived in Finland in 10 years but I’m sure they’d have a nice time there regardless 😊.
I haven't seen a new Gibson in a while but in the 2000s Tokais were easily as good or better than Custom Shop stuff for less money
@@EugeValovirta230V doesn't surprise me at all. I worked for the custom shop in 2000-01. You wouldn't believe the shit they pulled.
I do occasional work setting up guitars for a local music store and man some of those Gibsons. Like really?
Man, I wonder what models are your fine Tokai guitars... based on logo on peghead, a one could say it's ALC62 one of them (but your is black and looks like ebony or Macassar fingerboard) so called Traditional series, but there is also LC136S (again rosewood fretboard) from Vintage series, but more likely is that is LC230S (ebony f'board) from Premium series. Never tried these stock pickups but powered with 2203 each guitar growl like a lion! 😀
If I remwmber correct they’re LC85s and the standard is probably LS85 or something. I can’t remember since I’ve had them for about 20 years. Just the basic MIJ ones 👌.
None of them has their stock pickups but EMGs or Duncans.
@@EugeValovirta230V Thank you for your kind reply. 👌Since it is very hard to find any Edwards "explorer" model, and I already own an original Gibson, I turned to Burny and Tokai. Tokai was easy to find and now I have the model EX73. 🎉✨Of course, I'm delighted with your demo riffs and the songs you play when you demo the equipment you have, so I have the intention of changing to Tokai magnets as well. Looking at the comments of some owners, it seems that the winning combination is EMG 81/60, 81/85... although I was thinking more about 57/66 - not too powerful but they give "understandable" tones during solo parts. I'm also a little scared of the small control cavity for all those electronics,,,If you have any suggestions for this Tokai, just go ahead....
I own a 2005 LC85 loaded with a JB/59 set. I'm selling my Gibson LP standard and am on the hunt for a standard style Tokai LP if that tells you anything.
Japanese guitars are the best, top tier Tokai $ 3k-4k the same quality as Gibson $ 15k-20k
Which guitar do you like the most ? Tokai or esp
My signature ESPs are made exactly to my specs so those are as perfect to me as guitar can be but if I’d buy an LP I’d probably go with Tokai since those are better than your standard Gs. At least in my experience. And I have Gs too 😎.
@@EugeValovirta230V but the quality of gibson is decreasing because sound like a strat . it's not a gibson les paul those I used to listen . i prefer japanese made les paul . they capture the vibe of les paul
Shred head 😊😊
Of course, they don't fucking do it with the ebony fingerboard anymore.
Really? I saw the new Tokai catalog a few weeks ago and if I remember correct (it was physical - not on internet 😎) there was quite a few with ebony fingerboards.
@@EugeValovirta230V they used to make the cheaper series with it as well. I can't afford 2k on a gjitar unfortunately
If you can put ego aside with respect to whatever name is on the headstock, there are many Les Pauls far superior to Gibson, specifically the Japanese varietals.
I have a Tokai lp " love rock" over 20 years and I swear that guitar is better than any Gibson I've played I absolutely love it, the head stock cracked during moving and have to fix it or get a new neck, I've heard people say when you repair the head stock it ends up sounding better than before. What do you think I should do? By the way you are very great guitar player
Yeah! 💪
It’s quite hard to change an LP nect since it’s a set neck so you’d basically had to break the guitar to do that 😎.
Don’t about sounding better but if done right it just works 👌.
Thanks!
I swear.... it impossible to not like this guy. Insane skills, great videos and super nice. You deserve a million subs bro!
My favorite UA-cam guitarist ! Seems like a great guy too.
Thanks man! 🤟🕺
Glad to hear! Thanks!
he is the best! following Euge for long time now.
It's Mesa?!?
