- Zaouli or the Zaouli Mask Dance is a traditional dance of central Ivory Coast in the Sassandra-Marahoué District, the Guro-Speaking Region. The dance is based on a very fast movement of the legs, while the upper part of the body appears immobile or moves only slowly horizontally.
The masks used in the dance were not created until the early 1950's. It was a matter of reviving the old Ivorian rituals and culture of past centuries for dedicated preservers of tradition. Some sources speak of a young woman named "Djela Lou Zaouli" (Zaouli, daughter of Djela), who inspired the masks. There are seven different types of Zaouli Masks, each with their own legendary story. A woman is represented in the masks, just as the cult surrounding the masks is a homage to the female sex. Making a mask takes up to six days. A recurring element of the masks are two framing snakes. I have Heard that the musicians follow the dancers' rythm....and not the other way round. The dancer decides of his own speed and rythm....luckily 😄
The man standing with the dancer appears to be a kind of coach as the dancer enters the trance state to achieve such rhythm and speed beyond normal concience. Amazing.
I read that he also helps keep him oriented, because the dancers, in the mask and costume, can only see little more than what is at the end of their toes.

I know nothing about this dance, other than it is entrancing to watch. The dance moves into the dance and at some point there is a change in that dance and rhythm. I’ve been reading, several sources cite a change as entering a trance like state. I believe it. This is a beautiful and exciting dance. Zaouli Ivory Coast, I hope it continues strong and magical.

Mate ... These mates are bloody amazing!!!! So this is the Zaouli Mask Dance! Nothing comes close to it. I can see a bit of the late Michael Jackson's move in it, but he only did it for a few seconds (so this is where he got it from).
They're definitely TRANCED OUT doing this. WOW!!!!
