    Great vid! I’m an owl born in the mid 80s and growing up it wasn’t even debated. But two decades out of the top flight for Wednesday has certainly evened things up. Both have great support and history. Matt - if you would like a tour of the city when you come, I’d be happy to show you around and take you to the best views of both grounds from our many hills!

      Also, didn't Brammel Lane also serve as a cricket ground, at least up until the late 70's early 80's?... That would surely have impacted on the capacity and identity of the club. In the meantime, Hillsborough was considered one of the best stadiums in the country, regularly hosting FA cup semis.

    Location of the stadiums plays a part here. Bramall Lane is very close to the city centre so there is very limited car parking and most fans have to travel. Hillsborough is on the outskirts and is surrounded by lots of housing all within walking distance. Lots of on street parking as well. It is also well supported by public transport and Trams. A better measure of fan base is away matches and there won't be much in it here. Both are big clubs

    Excellent video and a brilliant question
    My Leeds mate has a nightmare scenario about Sheffield. He fears an alternate reality in which Sheffield just has one club.
    It is amazing that a city has two so ‘grand old’ clubs but they are so equal.
    I thought about this very question when my club Carlisle played both clubs in league one.
    In the eighties it seemed Wednesday were the bigger club as an outsider.
    What often has surprised me is there really does seem a bitter rivalry between the two clubs.
    Sheffield Wednesday what a great name
    Back in 1990 there was a TV documentary, fly on the wall style series called ‘United’. It was with Arry Basset. It was brilliant.
    A south London one of these would be useful; Charlton, millwall, palace.

    Blade here, I think Wednesday were the bigger club but it’s getting iffy now. United are I think attracting the youngsters who’s allegiance is not fixed. Nowadays if they get success Wednesday might edge it, but their stadium needs serious work. It has fallen far behind since the seventies, whereas Uniteds ground which was a poor 3 sided affair, has steadily and continuously improved with plans on the board for yet more capacity as well. It’s pretty even and Derby matches are something else, even neutrals can feel the atmosphere, winning that one is deadly serious. Both teams lack serious success if compared to a Liverpool or Chelsea etc, we seem fated so far to avoid true success, but we keep hoping.

    I have been watching the Owls since 1955. The were "the yoyo team" back then. They had a good period under Harry Catterick when they ended 2nd to Spurs in division 1. Its been down hill for one period since, as the steel industry was reduced in size. (See "The Full Monty"). Its been shambolic at S6 for years but the club might get back into the championship if they dont slip up in the next couple of months. But they are Wednesday, and it is there culture to do things the hard way. Cant say much about SUFC; I went to Bramall Lane once when Fred Trueman was bowling, but havent been back.

    As a Wednesday fan I think we are a bit bigger than United but my god our record over the last 20 odd years is pitiful! We are slightly bigger due to our history and our stadium. But our recent history is dire and our stadium needs serious cash spending on it. But, we are at least resurgent under Darren Moore and the future looks better. One thing you must do is visit both stadiums for an important game. Last week Hillsborough was absolutely rocking against Plymouth with 33k+ fans there for a third division game. @robincodna1437 Рік тому +3

    Not sure why the attendance record stopped at 18/19!? Other than that a decent summary although I think one thing that is difficult to summarise is that since 2000 Wednesday have reduced in size in my view, United the opposite. Why? Well as you probably guessed and as you mentioned, Wednesday haven't played top flight football since 2000, United on three occasions which might not be many but it's still significant over 0. Also for the vast majority of the 2000's United have finished above Wednesday when in the same division or United above Wednesday as currently the case. The exception being the 5 seasons out of circa 20 when United were in League One. So if the current trend continues with Wednesday out of the top flight and United in and out of the top flight I think you'll find United becoming bigger than Wednesday in terms of crowds (as currently the case in terms of average although granted Wednesday are in League One) and development to the ground/training ground. United's crowds have increased from circa 17,000 around 2000 to now 28-29000 average.

    • @mattthegroundhopper9242
      @mattthegroundhopper9242  Рік тому

      Thanks Robin for your comments, the reason the attendance stats stopped in 18/19 was due to covid and no crowds, it was skewing the stats. I think Utd have caught up a lot over the past 30 years, things evolve, they may be bigger one day??

    • @antonyware9887
      @antonyware9887 Рік тому +1

      Agree that United have the edge in respect of attendances. I think our City centre location and changing demographics attending games, ethnic minorities, more families , female fans, does seem to favour United. The area around Bramall Lane is more appealing, for example, brand new China town, Cultural Quarter, London Road, Abbeydale road, Ecclesall Road all with a plethora of real ale bars, breweries and restaurants. All that as well as the City Centre being 15 minutes walk away. By contrast Hillsborough is a pretty featureless and boring area with little of interest. Hillsborough is well served by the tram which drops you off at the ground. Kelham Island is also en route to Hillsborough which would be a big factor for me should I be an away fan. Spoiled for choice there with an absolute treasure trove of real ale bars and quirky eateries.

Well yes........and no, historically those from the northern areas of the city supported Wednesday, those from the South area and more centrally United but as the suburbs grew and people moved around then this is not so true. There are pockets where lots of United fans live and vice versa, I lived in a village that seemed to be more United than Wednesday although I was an Owls fan. Its more about family and what you were brought up on.
    Spoiler - Honestly who is bigger? United if you are marking out of recent performances, historically Wednesday, when I was a lad United never even played Wednesday because of the difference in league positions however it always ebbs and flows, we have a few years on top then they have a few years on top.

Promotion or a title at the lower levels in my opinion are the same value, not much worth in winning the league above finishing in a promotion spot. Also not sure about the size of the ground being worth a full winning round if it’s a close call. Firstly, when I was studying Geography with German at the University of Derby as a part-time mature undergraduate back in the Nineties, one of my German lecturers was a Blades' fan. Second, in the early 2000s, I hooked up with a young local band who styled themselves as a Mod band for the Modern Age, Censored, whose lead singer (another 'Matt'!) is an Owls' fan, so the singer beat the lecturer here! He calls Sheffield United the 'Blunts', BTW!
    As a 'Derbyshire Canary' I've been to both Bramall Lane and Hillsborough to see NCFC on the road around these parts, twice in both cases, one time (29th December 2001, at Hillsborough) seeing my biggest-ever away win (5-0), which warmed up a very chilly late December afternoon!

What really matters is where the club is now and how it's planning for its future. I've always said that both clubs will be more powerful as one Sheffield club, but history and fan loyalty gets in the way. Their stadium is a rusty old shed that poses a danger to other people and should be demolished. I understand your points.
