Quint wasn’t eaten in the novel- he drowned as he was trapped in a rope from a floatation barrel. That is why they had the scene in the film where he slammed the machete into the wood. Presumably to give the impression he would be trying to free it to cut himself free of the line like in the book.

I’m from Newport Beach, CA… I’ve been in the water my whole life but have never seen any great whites or sharks for that matter. Some of my friends have though… couple summers ago some lady was swimming and got attacked by a great white. She survived but was pretty roughed up
