There's a reason why most rich people tend to publicly donate to their own charities and rarely to others. Charity is just a fancy version of "tax haven". Not saying you should stop supporting charities (any help is still help), but if there's a way you can make your money mean something by doing it yourself or by supervision, it's the more effective solution of two than just the easiest solution to self-gratification. And not all charities are like that.

@John Failphins you are right. Unless the store says they are going to match your donation, never do it. Some stores invest go and invest the money donated, giving it to the charity much later. If you want to donate, research beforehand and donate in large to the charity you believe in.
90% of these "donations" go to the greedy heads of these charity companies. Also your donation is just being as a tax write off for the corporations. So ya I never donate to these scams, i rather donate to the charity of my choice with high percentage going to the actual cause.
